what to do when a bad cabinet plan is made

My kitchen is a disaster. First they measure the soffits wrong. Since they were 27 deep and my cabinet plan called for 24 we ripped them out. Then we decided to go with a 2 different heights 3.5 inches apart with the heighest cabinet being 3.5 in from the ceiling. (the new plan calls for 27 inch angled corners flanked by 9's..learning that's not a good idea... Now I just realized the duct for the hood goes to the ceiling so if we raised just the hood we'd have 3 different heights and that wall is only 10 feet. Problem is cabinets are made. I loved the old plan(didn't want to do 12's do to cost and wish I had) and am thinking about going back to it and putting 12's on top of 39's or I can change current cabinets to 45's . Either way I have to pay more because the current plan is made. I'm sure the cabinet guy will split the cost but not all of it. What to do???? Isn't a 45 a really tall cabinet? Please help.

I have 42" tall cabs and 9' tall ceilings so I'd say 45" tall cabs isn't "really tall." But I don't understand the rest of what you're asking. What does "didn't want to do 12's do to cost" mean? What does this refer to? Can you post a pic to clarify? That would be really helpful as I don't quite understand the problem and what you're trying to accomplish.

The hood is not usually level with the bottom of the cabinets, so could you alter the height of the hood so that it alines with one of your other uppers?

Asthetically, I don't think 45 inch cabinets are too tall in a ten foot height.

When I was looking at some cabinets, they said they would have to put a board (matching cabs) above the upper cabinets and then put the crown molding up to the ceiling. Maybe you can use a board to keep make it all seem like the same height?

Can you tell us what size cabinets you already purchased and have to work with? I am confused by your descriptions.

Thanks Flamey, LOL! I wanted to be fair to everyone. Good thing Evelyn was occupied with her "baby". :) Jenn-That is exactly what our visits are always like. My mom and Jason's parents visit us now and then but my brother's never been here. Grrrrrr. :) I have had fantasies about not telling my family when we're there but I can't even imagine the fallout if we bumped into them in the mall or when we were out. Eep! Vicki-I know, eh? It's so nice that they all love to see us so much but...maybe we should come down every weekend for a few months and make them sick of us! If only that were affordable. :D Flamingo-Oh, you are so right...he does work all day and it is nice for the kids to see him. I thought you meant that he was often away like on business trips and such. Silly me. :) Dilly Dally-Believe me when I say it's not like that. Her family stays when they want and so do we. The issue is that my brother is determined to host us no matter what we say, LOL. My future sister-in-law is not a control freak in the slightest and has been engaged to my brother for almost two years. What I'm trying to say is that it is my brother who is PUSHING for us to stay, not us. :) I do love him dearly even though he cheeses me off sometimes. Our parents are clamoring for us to come so that they can see us and hang out with the grandchildren. Seriously there is no imposition. At all. Ever. Zeetara-They are pretty awesome. I'm very lucky. Susan-Hotels are still freakishly expensive here in Canada. We just can't afford 85-100+ dollars x three nights. Sucks, but it's the truth. Carla-I'm sorry that it's hard to understand. My in-laws live in a newer bi-level with two bedrooms up and one down. They spend all of their time unless our family or Jason's sister's (and she live in Germany so that's very infrequent) are there to visit. After a two month visit or so from his sister, you can tell that they're glad to have the house to themselves...but a weekend isn't long enough as far as they are concerned. And no, I am not making this up or speculating, they have told us many times how much they love our visits. Every time Jason talks to them, they ask when we'll be down next. I don't think that we are unpleasant to host. We take care of our own children (except when they let Jason and I go off and watch a movie which is maybe two or three times a year) and clean up after ourselves. The kids all share the downstairs room which has a double bed (Evelyn sleeps in a playpen). They have toys at their house and a swing set outside. The kids love going and have so much fun. :) My in-laws have no set schedule on the weekend except to go out for breakfast on Saturday morning and we all go together. We usually pull out the cards and play for as long as we can stay up. It's a blast. When we stay with my own family it's pretty much the same thing minus the cards but we visit and maybe go shopping. So anyway, my mom called last night while I was at a meeting and I thought, great, now Jason can let her know our plans as we had made an itinerary before I had to leave the house. He told me when I got back that he had done so but she wanted me to call her. I called her back and she had some questions about my wedding for my brother and then we talked about the weekend. Jason and I decided to stay at his parent's house for the entire weekend with Saturday going out for breakfast with his parents and then shopping for the dresses with Saturday evening open for my family. Sunday was a date night for us and visiting our two friends with the girls staying over at my mom's that night, while Monday is for the girls to go swimming with my mom and for the museum and then coming home. I thought that it all sounded great and all of these activities were things that were already discussed so we seriously AREN'T being presumptuous. :D While my mom and I were talking, she said something about when the girls were sleeping over on Friday night. I said, "Didn't Jason let you know about what was happening?" She said yes, but I told her that we had discussed it and that this time we would be staying at his parent's house and that we had a few people to visit and some definite things that we wanted to do and that this was a vacation for us. She seemed perfectly fine with this when I explained that we wanted to see everyone that we hadn't seen in some time. So I'm feeling moderately relaxed about this until I phone my brother to let him know. :) Thanks for all of your help! I truly appreciate it and it felt very good to be firm to my mom about what WE wanted for a change. :) I think the weekend may be fun now. Danielle

@jellytoast and others who point out that basically I’m not qualified to act as my own GC and am not saving money by trying to do so: There’s truth to that. Ultimately I’m responsible for not verifying the install was plumb and square, and you have a valid point. I knew the installation itself was critical, and I knew the cabinets need to be square. I totally dropped the ball on verifying that they were. On the other hand, as Sammy pointed out, some GC’s are no better than what I wound up with. This could have ended up a non-issue, or the same way – or even worse. In any event we’re dependent on (1) our own knowledge + information from the GC or (2) our own knowledge + information from the installers/tradesmen. When we bought the house 2 years ago we hired a GC to install hardwood floors (in ½ the house) and to handle what was going to be a much larger kitchen remodel (bump into the garage and tear down another wall instead of keeping the same footprint). It was a really bad experience. First, we paid a premium for sub-par hardwood floor install/finish. Had I learned more on my own about HW floor install and finishes rather than relying on information from the GC and his sub we would have done the floors differently. It was a disappointing and costly mistake. I learned there are risks with a GC as well as without a GC, and that hiring a GC doesn’t guarantee desired results. We did get a bid from another GC to handle the scaled-down kitchen redo this year. Ultimately we weighed the risks vs costs in either scenario (GC vs no GC) and decided to GC ourselves. This isn’t the right decision for everyone, but I still believe it was the right decision for us despite the situation we’re dealing with. The KD came out yesterday along with one of the original installers and an install project manager. The project manager recommended tearing out the counter that has ½” shim, and install the cabinets correctly. Also tear out the crown moulding where it’s bad/ugly and re-do. All doors that have cosmetic imperfections will be replaced. At this point we are satisfied with the proposed solution, although it’s certainly not over. This does sound like a horrible situation, and I, too, want to give you my best wishes and hopes that things will improve over time,Tangles. I also agree with Lisa: be careful and safe! Sleeping in your car does sound dangerous, and I hope you can find an alternative,or that your sister will at least have the common sense to realize that it's absurd and really pretty unnatural to put you in a position where you'd be forced to do that. I also agree that .for now, it's best to leaves the roses be. Moses is right; you have enough to deal with already without having to think about them. Also, you might want to avoid any histrionic gestures; to me it sounds like your sister is being very histrionic and childish herself, and you don't want to get pulled down to her level, if possible, though I know that that can be difficult ,especially because it seems to me at least that she's kind of playing mind games: if she just wants to sell the house and move in with her b/f,why not just come out and say so? It does certainly sound like you'd be much, much better off having your own place. Best wishes and stay safe.

It's so much fun to hear what all of your favorites and non-favorites are. We are all so different, and yet, we are united by our love of quilting and fabric. People have pretty strong feelings about grey, even the spelling. I've always spelled it with an "e," but I notice most of you spell it with an "a." I just looked it up in the dictionary, and it seems that "gray" is most commonly used in the US, while "grey" is more common in other English speaking countries. Like Fran, I think grey is a great neutral. I lean toward the greys that have a tinge of brown in them, what I would call taupe. I'm not so fond of greys that have much blue in them. I was delighted to see a whole line of new reproduction prints that were all in my favorite shades of grey. The owner of the LQS was so excited to have them. I had all I could do to keep from buying a yard of each of them. But I resisted.

Hi all-

I don't really know how to use this sight. I didn't even realize you all responded. How do I learn that/ There were no notifications. And I didn't mean to send twice. Sorry. I'm new and desperate...:) The ceilings are 9 feet. Bottom cabinets are fine. It's the top in a u shaped kitchen I've purchased an entertainment center where the top cabinets are to the ceiling with 7 inches of crown... next to it is a 24 that's 39 inches with 3.5 inches of crown next to that is a 9 that's 39 inches and then a 27 angled that's 45.5 inches tall 3.5 of crown then a 36 that goes back down to a 39 with 3.5 inches of crown...entry way. on the other side is a 36(same dimensions as other) a 27 same dimensions as other and a 9 that goes back down to a 39 with 3.5 inches of crown(down below is a 12) and the 36 cooktop and a 12 that's 39 with 3.5 inc of crown next a fridge back up to 45.5. Some cabinets are 7 from the cieling, the others are 3.5 away . Now the hood will have to be to ceiling with the 9 and the 12 6 inches below becuase of the return of the crown due to fridge. Is 45 too tall for 9 ft? and the cabinets are so little...I wish I could post my plan ...I've tried. thanks for responding. I hate my kitchen. I'm definitely in the obsessed catagory now :( We meet with the cabinet maker on Friday. Thanks all...

And no, I don't think that 45" cabs are too tall for 9' ceilings. I have 42" cabs with 9' ceilings and I doubt that 3" would make a difference. As dilly_ny posted, kitchens with cabs of varying heights can look good. I can't picture what you mean, though (I'm a visual person) so if you could post a photo or an elevation drawing of your kitchen, that would be helpful.

I'd like to help but am having trouble following what you are telling us and picturing it. Check out the link and learn how to post pictures. They are worth so much in this process.

As far as cabinets that you think are too narrow, consider removing the doors or using them for vertical things.

Sounds like you are in a panic. Decisions made in a panic are not always the best ones. You need to stop and calm yourself so you can think clearly. Step back and breathe -- then rethink before you redo.

I don't seem to be able to post the PDF We are having the mtg with the owner tomorrow and we dont know what to ask for. He has 50 % of our deposit The 45s scare me in case they warp and he's only guaranteeing a year. 45.5 to be exact. Either way if we build up all the other cabinets to be all 45s it will cost money or if we cut the 45s down it will cost and we will have to put something on top for the other 15 inches I also don't love those 27 inch angled corner cabs flanked by 9s. Panic would be the right word. I'll try not to but I just don't see a great solution. I wish I could post my plan somehow!!!!!!

Donna, did you read the "new to GW" thread? The instructions are in there.

Here's a quick lesson. You'll need to upload the pdf to a photo sharing site (like photobucket or another of its ilk), then post the link code to imbed it in a message here. To find the link code on Photobucket, click on the image to bring it up (and only that image up), hover your mouse along the top of the image for the tools to show up. Click on the one that says "Share" to open another window. Click on "Get link code" then copy the link code under "HTML for websites and blogs" and paste it in this thread. It's all doable but we can't do it for you.
