Do most people with oriental rugs have light side facing doorway?

This is a question for those who have oriental rugs. Which side do you display when you enter the room, the dark or the light side? I know it depends on the lighting in the room but I am curious as to what most people prefer in their homes.

I like the dark side facing the entry. Neither way is right or wrong.

Women do spit..I never knew they did until my daughter in laws mother came to visit me with my son and my daughter in law (her daughter). OMG! 3 LONG days of her hauling around one of my nice coffee cups that she decided (I guess, didn't ask me if it was alright) would be nice for her to spit into...she puts this stuff under her bottom lip or top lip, I can't remember, (it is dark colored) and it dribbled down the sides of her mouth and then ever so often she would spit into one of my coffee cups. This was a constant with this woman. I have NEVER been so repulsed by something in my life. I don't know what she has got going there in her mouth but that was just too much for me. I get to see this all over again come August and then at Thanksgiving...aren't I the lucky one? Oh by the way..I threw that coffee cup away, and it went with a set, but I did not want it anymore after she did her business in it. I knew I would always wonder when I was drinking coffee if it was the one she used. I will be prepared for her when she comes back...bunches of plastic cups. I wish I did not have to put up with this but since my son is newly married, I do not want to stir the pot by complaining.

If you would allow me to chime in here as someone who has cleaned thousands of area rugs (thanks squirrel for the title :-)) Very briefly.... Enzyme based products are safe to use on all rugs. Enzymes eat the protiens in urine, blood, etc. The enzymes do not make a rug bleed. Enzyme based cleaners are marketed under different names, choose one and use it asap when a spot is discovered. Whether or not a spot/stain will come out is a whole 'nuther story and based upon various factors, the same as why some rugs bleed and others don't--more reasons than I can list here at the moment. Rugs come into my shop daily with some type of pet accident, so trust me when I say I've seen them all, including the accidents my own pets make at home :D Having been a member of GW for so many years, I think I should put together an easy to read 'how to' list about tackling pet accidents. Thanks for all the perspectives. It's good to know where people like lighting, cans especially. I will take it all into consideration. And I will not have a can ban. They do make sense in some places. Ice1, your lighting looks right. It looks like it's where it should be and it works with the house. I've decided to not put cans in my new room but I will put a few in an odd-shaped room (currently the kitchen but an office after the remodel) where a centered fixture isn't possible because there's no actual center. I'll probably fill in a few gaps in the new kitchen lighting with cans. If I lived in the frozen north, I'd probably want MORE LIGHT. When I redid a kitchen in Detroit, I used two commercial fixtures from the '20s with 300w bulbs to go with the pendant and UC lighting...it was a tiny kitchen. Palimpsest, if you saw my ceiling fans, you would understand that looking half burned out doesn't actually make them look worse. They are that bad. :) They probably won't make it through the remodel because we only use the fan feature a few times a year. I think unscrewing a single can light wouldn't give a burned out impression like it does in a ceiling fan. It would just make it look like someone had the foresight to put it on its own switch. Steph, I forgot I've had one of those remote switches before! I wonder where it is. I bet it's packed up in storage with my ruby glass swag lamp. (It came from a basement pool room decorated with a saloon theme in the 60s. It's one of the most ridiculous things I own.) My house has two original recessed light fixtures. One has been painted over. The other is in a walk-in closet. They are the big square ones with brass trim. I kinda like them...on a flat ceiling anyway.

Dark screening on windows appears to be solar screen, if so it needs to cover the whole window area to be effective. What many people are doing is covering the whole area or take the screen off completely. Most homes on the market for sale have the screens removed and the new owners do not put them back on the windows. People are not sitting on their front porch or out in the front yard, unless they live on acres out in the country. During the spring and summer, hang three or four flowering baskets along the front. Plant a couple of seasonal flowers on the other side of the steps. Congratulations on your new home!

I recommend turning your rugs once a year or so, so that any wear pattern is more even. So it doesn't really matter :)

If you run your fingers over the rug, one side feels silky. Go to the opposite end and your fingers will feel the knap of the wool sort of going the other way and that is the dark side. Every oriental rug has a dark and light side and the rug looks very different depending on which side is displayed as you walk into the room.

Turning the rugs is the right idea, but... In my living room, light comes in one side, but not the opposite. So I keep my rug oriented so the colors show to best advantage from both sides. Said another way, if you don't turn your rugs periodically, then place it so it looks most pleasing to you.

I like mine both ways and turn them 2x a year when I carry them into the front yard and place them top down to vacuum the backsides with the beaterbar . I air them for awhile and then DH and I carry/drag them back inside. This also when I wash the wood floors...makes me tired to write this LOL.

Only handwoven rugs have a pronounced light/dark side so you may not see it on every rug. It is fun to change them as the light and seasons change. c

I just got a new rug from Afghanistan - beautiful - and placed it with the darker side as you enter the room - for winter I think it is warmer - I'll switch it in summer to the cooler/lighter when you enter!
