Couldn't agree more! I especially love it when they do it upon entering a store, gas station, etc. What the h*ll are they thinking? Why would anyone be so inconsiderate as to make someone else step in that?

Before I opened this post, I just knew what you were referring too. I asked my daughter that very question yesterday when I saw 2 men spit as they were walking through the parking lot at the mall. Since I have never seen a woman do it.... all you men on this board, what is the answer?

Nothing like skirting around a huge hork. When I worked in the factory, the Asians were notorious for this. Don't call me racist or start a rant, they are the ones who did it regularly. I'm just calling it as I saw it (daily).

Probably a lot of men do it because they're chewing tobacco. I live in the south and it is a digusting habit. While waiting for a traffic light to change I frequently see men roll down their window and let one fly. Ugh!!!

Seems like some men to it simply because THEY think it's a sign of their manliness. If they only knew. . .

I rarely see spitting where I live. Thank goodness! It must be a regional thing.

I just went and googled 'why do men spit'. Lots of guesses but the main one was they do it to 'mark' their territory. I don't care what the reason is, just don't do it in public, please.

Some time back I saw a young supermarket employee (guy), spit just as came out of the door, right where all the customers would get into it, entering or leaving the store. I was so disgusted, I meant to call the store as soon as I got home, and report the employee. By the time I got home, I had forgotten about it until much later. If/when I see it happen again, you can bet that I'll report it. It's just plain nasty.

Ewww. I don't see people spit around here, either. Thank goodness.

I too, guessed the subject of this thread before opening it. Just last night, I was talking to a neighbor out front and BOTH his boys (one's 20, the other's about 10), were doing that. Dad did say something at one point, but they were doing it right near my feet. YUCK!!!! And then DH came out (not having seen the act) and stepped in it. Told him to clean his shoes well before coming inside.

well try riding motorcycles in a pack and the men decide to start spitting while riding and you are the one behind guess what happens!!! Those face shields are not just for bugs is all I can say.

In the South especially a lot of men do chew and with the chew comes the spit, I hate the whole process and all that goes with it. And I am sure finding one of their cups or receptacles is not much fun either.

A guy from the City came out last week to check the trees under the power lines in back of me and he kept spitting in my yard as I spoke to him. My guess is that he chews.

In some places there are ordinances making spitting illegal. The reason the ordinances were passed is because TB can be spread that way. So these are old ordinances but if you check you may be surprised to find out it is illegal to spit on the street!

Yuck, I agree it is disgusting. I've seen men, women, and teens do it. Some of the offenders I've seen do not look like someone who would chew tobacco, but of course looks can be deceiving. In those cases I have no clue why they would do something so revolting in public. Maybe they want to appear 'tough' or something. For goodness sakes, why can they not go into the restroom and spit in the toilet if they must?

Even if some do chew tobacco, which is another discusting habit is no excuse for spitting on the ground.

This disgusting behavior is rampant here in TX. Everywhere you go, you have to watch where you walk. It is so repulsive and vile, and there really is no excuse for it. I don't understand why people who do this aren't fined, after all, it IS bodily fluid.

Gosh, I live in Texas and i don't see it around here. I think I'd notice because i would be grossed out too.

I think it's disgusting as well. Reminds me of blowing your nose without using a tissue. Yuck....

Why would anyone spit? Maybe they got a bug in their mouth? I wouldn't doubt often from allergies, asthma, or even reflux, that too much phelgm is brought in your throat/mouth (too much to swallow), and you just need to get it out. If you're a guy without tissues or a bathroom within 'spitting distance", I would think many may just spit it out.

It's kind of gross, but it doesn't really bother me.

Men in TN spit because most chew tobacco. It is disgusting but the worst I have seen is one guy had a paper cup in his shirt pocket & kept spitting into that. Why would any woman want to kiss that mouth.

I also hate spitting, but worse than that is sucking snot in a restaurant!

Our neighbor does..it grosses me out to say the least. But what's even worse is when he's in our house, he spits into our kitchen garbage can..SO GROSS!!!!! And yes, he chews!

What's even worse though, is when I used to work at a fast food place here in town, one of the gals that worked there, would spit into the sink we used to wash our hands!! And yes, I reported her.

Spitting... a touchy subject with me right now. It's part of the reason I have had to ground my 12 y/o GS from coming to stay with me for a month. He spit twice on my porch and when I asked him to stop he moved out into the yard and started spitting. Again, I asked him just to stop spitting and told him how disgusting it was. He thought it was funny and continued the spitting. We had a bad weekend. He was terribly disrespectful and mouthy. I've had a hard time with his behavior since he moved back with his mother. I'm just not going to let him come here and do whatever he darn well pleases.

I think it's disgusting and germy. I have never ever seen a woman spit. I swallow my own saliva when my mouth gets juicy. Men are pigs.

I hate it, I start gagging when someone does it.

I caught my son doing that during a soccer game when he was in grade school, copying another player who thought he was *cool*. I read my son the riot act, up one side and down the other and told him I better never, ever catching him doing that again. His father doesn't spit, I don't spit and saw no reason why he should.
As far as I know he never has again and he is going on 38.

Ok, I have to admit, the ONLY time I have ever spit is when I jog. (My nose also runs like a faucet.) For some reason, the saliva gets all "stuck" in my mouth, I guess from all the huffing and puffing lol. Sometimes drinking water helps, but I have spit a handful of times. 99% of the time it is off the trail in the woods, not on the main path or street.

I guess some of us men don't realize just how upsetting it can be. I can see spitting tobacco juice on the sidewalk could make you upset. I wouldn't like that either. Now just clearing your throat and spitting it in the street or in the grass, it doesn't bother me. I just left a customer's shop yesterday and the air inside was very dusty and they were spraying paint also. This is a dirty oilfield shop. I pulled up to the bank, cleared my throat and spit in the steet not thinking anything about it. My thinking was to not swallow that gunk in my throat and spit it out. I bet husbands peeing while working in the backyard instead of going inside the house gets women riled up too.

If my husband was too lazy to go inside to the bathroom, I would... well, I would probably spit on him!

I have known of mothers that would allow their little boys to pee outside. Poor parenting in my opinion.

I bet many men do it and the wives might not even know it. Why walk all the way inside when you can water the bushes outside. Men do not have a problem peeing outdoors trust me.

cbtexas, such men are pigs, unless your yard is more than 10 acres and you are in a wheelchair.

In days of yore, tobacco chewing was the source of much spitting - really nasty habit in my opinion. My dad smoked pipe tobacco and chewed. I can attest that tobacco chewing was the worst of the two.

However, today in my location, most spitting by men, when outside, is due to cronic sinus and throat irritation. When they cough up a big goober, they do not like to swallow it and spit it out. The problem is they are not choosy about where to deposit the hunk.

Women do spit..I never knew they did until my daughter in laws mother came to visit me with my son and my daughter in law (her daughter). OMG! 3 LONG days of her hauling around one of my nice coffee cups that she decided (I guess, didn't ask me if it was alright) would be nice for her to spit into...she puts this stuff under her bottom lip or top lip, I can't remember, (it is dark colored) and it dribbled down the sides of her mouth and then ever so often she would spit into one of my coffee cups. This was a constant with this woman. I have NEVER been so repulsed by something in my life. I don't know what she has got going there in her mouth but that was just too much for me. I get to see this all over again come August and then at Thanksgiving...aren't I the lucky one? Oh by the way..I threw that coffee cup away, and it went with a set, but I did not want it anymore after she did her business in it. I knew I would always wonder when I was drinking coffee if it was the one she used. I will be prepared for her when she comes back...bunches of plastic cups. I wish I did not have to put up with this but since my son is newly married, I do not want to stir the pot by complaining.

I don't remember the last time I saw someone spit on the street. I don't think it happens much around here. I remember some of my older relatives who carried a can around with them when they went from room to room. I can't image having tobacco in my mouth. Yuck!

I don't spit. I never learned how. All my friends
did chewing tobacco but I didn't.

Many women have chronic sinus and throat irritations and you don't see them hurling mucus all over God's green earth.

People who spit are ignorant, and lack any sense of self awareness or acknowledgement of the public around them. And they tend to raise kids with the same oblivious tunnel vision.

Just watch a major league baseball game and you see it happen all the time....That and grabbing to make sure "it's" still there...I guess if the "big" boys do it on TV, it's OK, but it really is disgusting.....I have 4 boys and I certainly wouldn't put up with it......

Just reading this thread turns my stomach! Yuck. Yep - my reaction on the odd occasion that I see someone spit is "low class". I'm surprised that some are Ok with it, but to each their own.

Ranks right up there in my pet peeves, along with littering.
