Pictures - Help please.. Pretty Please, with sugar on top

Hello all you wonderful kitchen people, I need your help!

We are going to be building a house, and I think I FINALLY, for real, know the layout. I drool over some of the kitchen here, and what really catches my eyes are kitchens with a window or two.

Background, my kitchen I currently have, is an interior, and just dark. No real light flows into the area so I really want some beautiful sunlight, that's why I moved to Florida 16 yrs ago!

Okay, so I found a plan that gives me an outside kitchen, with an area for a window :) and a bright sunny breakfast nook. My problem is before I can move forward with drafting my plan to build, I must decide on where the sink, frig, stove, etc are going to go, as it will be build on a slab.. and there is no changing my mind!

I have played around with this one design all day, and now I humbly bring it to all of you here for feedback and critique.

The original plan calls for the cooktop in the island, and the whole back wall is pretty much open.. (I'll post a picture). I'm not sure I'm doing a good thing by closing off the kitchen, actually - I like both open and closed floor plans which makes things a wee bit harder to decide! LOL

So, here is the layout I came up with using a $39.00 program. The cabinets and real design can come later, I just need to decide on where to put things so that drafting can start and I can move forward.

Here is the stock plan from the designer. I am aware the room is a little smaller, as I want to tweak the whole plan to reduce the sq. footage.

I like your layout better, the first one is yours right?
I'm not one of the good layout people around here but I will say that I think you would benefit from a small prep sink in the island across from the range since the island is right in between the cook top and sink.
You did a great job with that layout program!

Thanks rookie! I'm still playing around, here is take #2.. I moved the cooktop to laundry room wall, and oven to wall near great room.. and left it more open.

I'm not sure if I like it so open.. or maybe I don't even want an island..!!? (oh my..) It seems like in plan 2, the stove is far away..? We are down sizing, and I want the kitchen to be pretty. The most used appliance will be my microwave! LOL

Rhizo, Thanks. From what I just read, it sounds like the mites are harmless so I won't worry about them and the galls. Any idea what the little green horns are in the 4th picture? Since I missed the dormant application this past winter, do you think a summer application would help to cut down the aphids and reduce the Sooty Mold that is just now starting up? Bonide also claims (via their support line) that the neem oil will help wash away the mold and acts as a natural fungicide. Anyone have any experience with these claims? Regarding the warning labels, I think the oil is the most toxic: Bonide Horticultural Oil RTU: Harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. Do not get in eyes, on skin or on clothing. Avoid breathing spray mist. In case of contact, wash immediately with soap and warm water. Wash hands, arms, and face thoroughly with soap and warm water after handling. Wash all contaminated clothing with soap and hot water before re-use. Boneem: RTU Hazards to humans and domestic animals CAUTION - Causes moderate eye and skin irritation. Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Insecticidal Soap: No real warnings for humans

This is a hard question to answer without actually going to the site. But, you should look into the alkaline issue. Because your soil is so alkaline, your plant is unable to take in certain nutrients (elements) that are responsible for making chlorophyll, carotein, xanthophyll, and other pigments used in photosynthesis. These same photosynthetic pigments give the colors in the fall. Green (cholorphyll) is the first to go because it is unstable in cold temperatures. Carotein and others hang in there longer. When the colder temps come, chlorophyll is broken down and not replaced. The other pigments stay in the leaves and continue working. But, a plug forms at the petiole where the leave attaches to the stem trapping those other pigments in the leaves giving the colors. Like I said, high pH soils prevent the tree from taking up some elements like iron that are part of building these pigments. So, with a low volume of pigments, you will have little color; even year around. If my guess is correct, then your tree should be a weaker yellow than what you saw on the tag when you bought it. If I am wrong, hey, you got to read a bit of rambling about plant science. If it is a pH issue, you can add sulfur to the soil to bring down the pH. But, it is not long lasting. You will have to add it often. A little often is better and more useful than a lot once. It will wash away (along with the nitrogn when your husband is watering excessivly). Sometimes too much water can cause many more problems than suffocation of the roots. Contact the extension service up there. http://extn.msu.montana.edu/ These people work for the state and answer questions for free. They do charge for soil tests. My state's extension service charges $14.00 for it. It's not much. But, most of the people you talk to over there have doctorates and specialize in issues just like yours. You might be talking more about the spacing itself but... Don't hire a handyman...posterboard or newspaper is your friend! Measure and cut out all your sizes, use painters tape to move them around until you get them just how you want it. Mark your pencil hole right on the paper and hammer through. You can even push the nail through just enough to make a slight dent in the wall and then remove the paper to add the nail if you want. I make mock ups of everything. My walls would look like swiss cheese if I didn't!

Thank you both! Allergies are doable, it is just the newness of it and trying to figure out the whole diet and grocery shopping. When it rains it pours. I just don't do well dealing with more than one mind boggling topic at a time. And we have an upper GI scheduled in the morning, a doc appt later this week, and an allergy/gi doc appt next week. Plus hubby is out of town. I may be off on the $5k, but it sounded like $5k to recess it or the cost of the fridge would double just to recess it. Either way...really? This GC is a home builder. Nice home builder. Million dollar home builder. So he has wonderful ideas, great vision, superior attention to detail, but I don't know if he is trying to make this into a showpiece or if he isn't used to working within the confines of a wall space. If he knows how small my budget is that he is just trying to keep me from going overboard. Why he likes the pantry: He commented on resell (not thinking that right now) that the pantry/butlers pantry would be a big selling point. That anyone walking into the space wouldn't really notice how much smaller the DR was because there is nothing to compare it too. I have a designer acquaintance who is part of our cooking group. She was here this spring and made a comment that making the DR smaller might detract that the current size lends to its beauty. Hmmm not too beautiful right now with the painted white plywood floors. But I don't have anything in there now, not a bunch of furniture or anything. And the wall where the pantry would go, is dark and seems to get lost in the room. Also the DR seems almost too big, that the corners get dark and just a lot of wide empty space....so I don't know why I worry so much. I guess it just seems a drastic change. So I get conflicting statements and I'm just Jane Doe homeowner who hasn't had the pleasure of a kitchen remodel or any design experience. My degree from college was Geology. This interior space stuff is not my thing. Yes, rhome, it comes down to what do I want. I want the walk in pantry. I thought I wanted an island. I thought putting the pantry into the garage would be a better use of space. But then where does the door go. So his plan of using existing space and budget concerns make it more realistic. I am not sold on the peninsula idea, but it seems to make more sense than the island. But peninsula seating ontop of table seating doesn't make much sense. Any way I look at it, I need to change the fridge. Now the but. But if we do recess it I can recess that whole wall (because he said it wouldn't cost any more to do the whole wall than it would a 3 foot secion) and maybe make an island more user friendly. Then do the butler/walk-in. Maybe I just need to sleep on it because I'm not making any decisions here.

I answered your other post, so I'm not sure which one to stick with. This last plan has the stove in the walk through area, which will be inconvenient for the cook and maybe dangerous for cook and those walking through.

Where you room will or will not open is a personal preference. Think about - if and how you entertain, who you entertain and how frequently (especially if kids or grand kids are involved), and how much access do you want to different rooms. My MIL can watch (and unfortunately hear) the TV from her kitchen. When we visit with all sibs and grandkids her open kitchen to living room is a nightmare to me. But this is one week in the year and I know that she and her husband, who are alone or with one or two visitors at a time, love to be all in one room.

I grew up with a larger eat in kitchen. With your layout you will have that. If you open to the living room those in the kitchen will have access to the LR and vice versa - sound, noise, smells. That would not go over well in our house. But, because of a tight house floor plan, we did open the kitchen to the dining room AND added an island with seating. I love cooking with friends and kids around the island. I know others hate that. If we didn't have island seating, anyone visiting would be on the other side of the room in teh dining room or uncomforably hovering around the kitchen.

So - layouts are about your life style, sound/noise/smell access and views (i.e. seeing beyond the room to something nice and/or making the space seem larger become of the opening.

One thing I will suggest - if you have a nice view and can afford it but in a large window or two medium windows (or more if you don't mind losing the uppers.) We put in a two large windows with a transom over our sink and love it.

rhome410, thanks for the link, I found on my double post! I totally see what you mean, and what I didn't realize, is that this layout is almost exactly what we currently have! The island is in the way to the sink, and sink to stove is a small walk around. Guess I need to think a little more on this.

Sparkle, lot of food for thought! We are downsizing and I did some measuring, and this layout - the kitchen is still pretty big. (larger than my current one!) obviously, I need to play around a bit more - I'm anxious to start the ball rolling, but don't want any mistakes!
