You might be talking more about the spacing itself but...

Don't hire a handyman...posterboard or newspaper is your friend!

Measure and cut out all your sizes, use painters tape to move them around until you get them just how you want it.

Mark your pencil hole right on the paper and hammer through. You can even push the nail through just enough to make a slight dent in the wall and then remove the paper to add the nail if you want.

I make mock ups of everything. My walls would look like swiss cheese if I didn't!

Ahh, thank you.. That is an easy enough solution.. Almost feel a little embarrassed I didn't think of that before posting.. I will definitely give that a whirl and use your advice from now on!!

Instead of nailing them up, you can try the 3M hanger strips. I have a zillion family photos hung on my stairway wall, most with the 3M strips. They're kind of like Velcro on steroids, and you stick one side on the picture and the other on the wall. Let them set a bit and then *hang* your picture. It's very easy to adjust them a bit to get the pics lined up exactly right and no nail holes in your walls. They're a lot pricier than a single nail but are really great.

One important detail: Make sure the picture wire or the metal hanger is EXACTLY the same distance from the top of the frame on every picture in the group. If it varies you have to make a template for each picture that shows the position for the nail hole for that picture.

Once I learned that (from a picture framer friend) my picture hanging frustrations decreased.

One more tip:

After you create each cutout, position it on the BACK of its corresponding picture.

Then, with a pencil, find the exact point where the nail will need to be. Poke a hole into the cutout at this point.

Then, once you have all your cutouts taped to the wall in the best position, simply poke the pencil through the hole and make a little mark on the wall.

This is the precise position for your nail.

No measuring required.
