Waxy finish on cotton pillowcases - how to undo?
Comments (6)Hi: The only culprit I can think of is cold water and/or the amount of detergent you use. Which Tide? Liquid or Powder? - I read somewhere that the liquid supposedly has a plastic type polymer in it to keep it fluid or something weird like that. Also, how much detergent are you using? The debate on how much to use has been in the range from 1 teaspoon all the way up to the full amount recommended for a specific load size. I personally have switched to Tide Powder and use the recommended amount for the load size specified; no second rinse and no fabric softener of any kind and have recently noticed that my clothes are coming out just a bit softer and smelling cleaner (towels don't seem to sour as fast). I don't know, that's a whole different story but I suspect it's just a buildup of oils from scalp and hair and the dryer is kind of like baking into the fabric making kind of like wax layer like you might get with some dryer sheets used in a dryer which is too hot... If you have any further events, feel free to post them and let us know and maybe we can help more :-)...See MoreSweat stained white pillowcases
Comments (7)linnea, I've had this happen before, I love sheets and pillowcases from the 50's 60's &70's..but they can be a resl pain to clean. Those yellow stains are built up body oils that have adheared like glue to the fabrics fibers. I can tell you what I do..but I have no idea if yours can take the process, I first soak mine a few day in the hottest tap water with LIQUID detergent,(liquid works best for oils) changing the water about every 6 hours and adding a bit more detergent. .after a few days I put them in a huge soup pot ( yes friends my soup pot gets a work out) than cover with hot water, put it on the stove and bring to a boil, tu rn down to a simmer, add a good TOL powder detergent this time and a good dose of biz..stir with a paint stirrer till mixed well and just let them simmer maybe 30 min and shut off...after it cools enough to handle without getting burnt I carefully pull the pillowcases out , remember all the gunk will be at the bottom of the pot....than I put them in the wssher and run a prewash..by now there's enough detergent in the fibers so add nothing to the prewash...than wash on longes t setting with hot water, true hot water with detergent and biz...this process works even better if you have STPP to add to every process except final rinse. I know this seems like a long process but it's sooo worth it to sleep on vintage bedding. I've found the older the bedding the better it stands up to boiling water. Omg this sounds like a recipe...lol...See More100% cotton, do not bleach. Why? Why? Why?
Comments (11)I think one of the problems is you can't trust the 100% cotton label any more. I've used chlorine bleach for years on whites and the only time there has been a problem with something yellowing is when I think they've surreptitiously blended polyester into cotton. Poly is very prone to yellowing when bleached. You know - those t shirts that have a little lycra in them (too stretchy for 100% cotton) or sheets that you can actually get a shock from or see sparks when you raise the top sheet in the dark. 100% cotton doesn't shock or spark, so I know there is unmarked poly in lots of things these days. I have a front loader with a bleach dispenser and it only uses about a tablespoon or two of bleach per load....See MoreRemoving everyday soils/oil on pillowcases
Comments (14)Well..as you know the stain is caused from a build up of oils that than turn like wax. I buy vintage, flat, white, 100% long staple cotton sheets from the 50's&60's....used....they are VERY stained and reek to the high heavens...I've had to boil them...but I also had good luck using Tide with Bleach powder and ammonia...but very very hot water is a must as is multiple hot soaks and washings....remove the oil build up and the stains will be gone...this is why I always say body oils can be the biggest soils.. And don't you go feeling bad...everyone has body oils no matter how often they shower. ..trick is if you have more body oils than the average bear...change your pillowcase more often..this will help prevent too much from clogging up the fibers. I change mine and the boys daily..only takes a hot second and i have a lot of them Good Luck....See Morecearab
