kitchens with table/chairs or not?

Have been reading and learning so much incredibly useful information for the past several months and now we are getting ready to revamp our 1990's kitchen--need to make it more user-friendly and add more storage. I've been given two design suggestions--one is a modern "u-shape" layout with a two-level counter for eating. The other is a more typical L with an island and space for table and chairs. THIS is what we have now. I have 3 kids but one is at college, 1 is 15 years, and 1 is 6. We don't sit together too often for meals--usually 2-3 of the 5 together. We do have a formal dining room.

I love the layout of the kitchen without the table and chairs (lots of curves and great use of space), but we are used to having a kitchen table & I'm getting stuck on that when considering options. The alternate kitchen layout does have a rounded, table-like end where people could gather.

What's your experience in a kitchen without a kitchen table?

Any thoughts, and experiences with a counter/bar instead of table would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
