tips for nice-looking CD storage?

We are eager to get rid of the jewel cases -- this is part of our Chanukah presents to ourselves this year. But we're not sure what to go for. Anyone have CD storage they like? Ideally something that looks like a book or a photo album, and pages can be taken in and out of a binder, like a looseleaf notebook?

I like the large black binders that are sold everywhere, very practical .
You cannot remove the pages in mine, although I don't know why I would want to do that.

Think "out of the box"...as in don't go out and just buy something for CD storage. You could buy a cupboard or cabinet that could also work as an endtable or something. Look for sensible ideas that work in more than one way so it's not screaming "CD's are stored here!"

I just use regular craft paint in the little bottles, available at Michael's or Hobby Lobby... but most large stores carry that stuff in their tiny craft sections. I'm sure if you look, there is a specific type of paint that is made for painting on porous surfaces that might be moist at times... I'm not incredibly interested in how long the paint lasts on the pots, so it doesn't matter to me. I'm sure you could find sealer, as well. Michael's and Hobby Lobby both carry a nice selection of stencils, too. I've used pieces of a sponge to dab the paint on, using a stencil. The English Ivy pattern is one of my favorites, as are other types of vines or country type motifs. I don't have a photo of the pot set I did... I never thought to take one. Most of the pots I have currently are either plain, or they're so ratty looking, a picture wouldn't be worth taking! But I'm sure you get the ideas... You could also use a clear/transparent bathroom silicone and glue little pieces of tiles or mirror around the rim... or colored glass pieces, or whatever... a mosaic! Take a look around your local craft store... you just never know what sort of ideas might be waiting! Think "pot rim"... and let your imagination go wild!

I think you can send/take a soil sample to Cornell to get testing done. They can probably test for lead if that seems likely to be a problem as well as pH, major nutrients, and organic matter. You can do some basic tests as outlined here: http://organicgardening.about.com/od/soil/a/easysoiltests.htm http://www.finegardening.com/how-to/articles/hows-your-soil-texture.aspx?id=81680 Adding organic matter to the soil is always good, particularly if it is clay (yours sounds like it has quite a bit of clay) or sand. Some options to get additional compost might include: Can you borrow a truck? Could you hire a landscaper to deliver city compost for a cost that seems reasonable? Can you rent a truck (I think some of the big box stores rent trucks by the day/hour)? Is there a soil/mulch/compost supplier that can deliver a quantity from their bulk stocks for a price that seems reasonable to you? In future years, you may be able to pick up other folks leaves curbside to create more of your own compost. How worried you should be about contaminents may depend on where you are planting. For instance I live on an old farm, so in general I don't worry, but I don't plant anything edible near the house or where other old buildings stood since lead was used in house paint for many years, so I just assume that the soil near the house has a relatively high lead content. Likewise, I wouldn't plant next to a busy road since lead was a gas additive, but if your land has no history of industry, I wouldn't worry beyond that. Covering the grass is a great start since it will add organic matter as well. If you used enough layers of newspaper and it has been on long enough, most of the grass will have been killed. Grass will grow sideways into the garden under the stone border, so I would add a V shaped trench a few inches deep that gets refreshed a couple times over the course of the growing season to help keep the grass from growing into the veggie bed. Keeping mulch on the surface will help prevent weed seeds from sprouting and keep moisture levels more even. Love the sticker storage ideas!! I was just looking for a way to organize my ever-growing collection! Scissors storage...a couple of ideas here. If you've got room, a corkboard with hooks in it works great to hang on the wall. If you're like me and don't have the wall space, go to WalMart or any store like that and go to the home organizing section where they keep all the little plastic-covered wire shelves you can get for organizing kitchen cabinets. They have one there that has square holes perfect to hold a single pair of scissors. I have mine stored in them and it works great! If anyone wants to see what that looks like, click on the link below. As for paper scraps, I do like most everyone here...I have them in ziploc bags...but I keep mine in a 3 ring binder organized by color. I have 2 binders, one for plain colors, one for printed paper. I make punchies as I need them, and the extra ones I end up not using go into an empty film storage can. I keep whole sheets of paper in hanging file folders in a milk crate. My rubber stamps are stored in a box exactly like my punches. I don't know what the best way is to store them...I'd like to hear some ideas. I don't use mine very often, and I don't have any that are too expensive, but I'd like to keep the ones I have in nice shape. Anyway, hope something there helps...love organizing threads!! --Becky T. Even cereal needs to be in a plastic or glass container....those little varmints will get into anything...I found mouse poop every where food had ever been ..the little critter was steady searching for any crumbs... Since you are not moving you will not be interested in this hint but maybe someone who does move around will be...There are some things that just need to be in a particular place all the time and I hated picking them up and moving them every time you move so I solved that issue by velcroing baskets to certain places....For instance...I have a small basket about 2 inches X 7 inches wide on my night stand that holds my reading glasses, hand cream, tums, nail clippers etc etc and another on next to my captains chair up front...at the table, I have one , much larger, on each side of the table...one will hold his prescriptions and supplements, the salt and pepper, and mine on the other side, holds mine...the space between the two baskets hold napkins,,,It's nice that we don't have to clear the table every time we move..the baskets look nice and will hold enough that we can toss in whatever else we need . There is a basket on the counter top where we keep scissors, the dogs leash, tape, things we need to get to quickly and then there is a bin that we have taped to the bulkhead over the motor where we carry things like battery chargers. flashlights bulky items and on top of that another basket that has the phone charger and keys, wallet and change for tolls and lots of other things like glasses and clippers blah blah blah...couldn't get along without the baskets...

I asked this question a few weeks ago. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on a cabinet, so I've ordered some of these binders I've linked below.

I like these because you can put the case covers with the DVD so if you want to look up something about the movie, you have it handy. The seller sent the wrong item, so I'm still waiting to receive them.

If you are looking for a good zippered case rather than a piece of furniture check out this website. I order from them a lot for our software cd storage at work and their products are very well made and durable.

Thanks, all. Lafonda, I found your thread, but it didn't reveal your final choice for storage -- thanks for chiming in here. Mimi, I'd never have found that without your link!

I was hoping someone would have a source for the CD albums that look like (faux-) leather-bound books or photo albums. THere are a bunch of them listed on Amazon, but many of the customer comments note they're fragile, and that means they'd never survive in my house...

But I think I'll also head to Marshall's later today and see if I come across anything useful.

Best storage I can recommend is a "jukebox." We bought a 400 disc changer a few years ago and put the majority of our CDs in it. We got rid of all jewel cases and put the liner notes in binders. We organized the music according to category and numbered each liner note to the corresponding CD's place in the changer. I also created 2 master lists ... one alphabetical and the other by category.

If you're looking for durable binders that look like notebooks, try a shop for Music teachers. We are VERY hard on CD binders because we are constantly going into them and exchanging CD's.

Plank Road Publishing sells to the general public, as far as I know. I've linked you to the page with different CD storage ideas. I'm probably going to be getting something like these myself and getting rid of the plastic boxes, for school. I have almost 500 CD's - lotsa space and the boxes are constantly breaking!!!
