RV's and food storage tip help

I mentioned last week that we bought a camper last week. It is being set up on a permanent site.
I would like to keep some food up there because Jim will be going by himself some to hunt.
I have been storing up some dry things like sugar, crackers, instant potatoes, coffee, pasta, hot chocolate mix...in pint size canning jars and using my food saver to seal the jars.

Will the jars be okay if they freeze? (all dry goods)

What about canned soup or jars of spaghetti sauce?

Will boxed things be okay if I put inside plastic containers? (critter protection)

Our trips up there would be several weeks to maybe 2 month apart.

Yes I think it would be OK. I use plastic sealable containers for a lot of the stuff that stays in ours. I stock up on cans of soup, ravioli, deviled ham, tuna, etc, and the packets of mixes for pasta and rices. All of the stuff in paper packages get sealed in the plastic bins.

I bought the individual packets of ketchup, mustard and mayo which can be stored longer. I have a set of ceramic containers with the metal lock down lids that seal super tight for sugar, coffee, flour, etc. Those types of containers with the lock down lids are excellent, I have also some that are plastic and glass. Nothing can get into them.

Ziplock baggies will not stop bugs and critters so I put those in the sealable plastic containers.
Feel free to ask because I learned a lot from the people here when we got our rv.
The only problem is if something freezes and is in glass the jar could break. The other stuff should be OK.

The only time you need to worry about frozen jars is if the content is liquid. Dry goods should not cause breakage.

Here's where I heard about the hashbrowns in waffle iron (have since seen it several places): Hashbrown Waffles by Waffleizer.com Directions: 1. Wash and peel the potatoes. Shred them and squeeze them dry with a towel. (This ensures that your potatoes brown nicely.) 2. In a mixing bowl, add the potatoes, followed by salt and pepper to taste. 3. Spread about a teaspoon of butter on the waffle iron. (A silicone pastry brush works well; neither you nor the brush will melt while you spread the butter around the extremely hot waffle iron, and any nonstick finish on your waffle iron will be spared.) 4. Pile the shredded potatoes into the waffle iron and close the lid. 5. After a few minutes, you may wish to squeeze down the lid a bit. Check the potatoes after 10 minutes. In my waffle iron on the medium heat setting, the potatoes showed golden-brown highlights after about 15 minutes. But yours will vary, possibly by quite a bit. 6. Carefully remove the potatoes from the waffle iron. Serve them with grated cheese or sour cream. You could also serve waffled hash browns with ketchup, alongside a waffleburger. But that takes serious commitment to the concept. And I would worry about you a little. I used mine as the base for a fried egg, topped with shavings of three-year Gouda. It took me about two minutes to clean my plate. And, no, I did not waffle the egg. Not that one, anyway. Cooking bacon came from Alton Brown's show.

What a quinkydink that my daughter-in-law sent me these just a couple of days ago. I have only tried the "peeling a banana" one...it works. Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't have to pick the little 'stringy things' off of it. That's how the primates do it. Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster. Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold! Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking. Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking. To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up. Heat up leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove, set seat to med\-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works. Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out. To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill it 1/2' with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid, mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever! Your idea is great. I use one of those large plastic Rubbermaid containers for the rolls of gift wrap and I have room in my pantry. But a few years ago I finally realized that I just buy way too many rolls especially after Christmas when they're on sale. I like to wrap my presents and put them under the tree as part of the holiday decorations. So now I only buy solid color wrap and then decorate the packages with ribbons, ornaments and other little holiday decorations. I think it's a prettier look than the odd assortment of leftover paper that I always had. So now I've extended that principle to all my wrap- birthdays, anniversaries, weddings etc. I use an appropriate solid color and then get my thrills by using ornamental ribbons, silk flowers, ornate bows and other decorative items on the boxes.

Not everything stores well in bags due to the texture of the food and the effect of being vacuum-sealed in a bag. For instance, I prefer canisters or jars for chocolate chips (in bags they become chocolate chip "bricks"), coconut, cereal (crushes to dust in bags), cookies, crackers/snack food, powdered milk, lettuce, sweet peppers, etc. I have a lot of canisters in every size they make and have most of them in use. I use jars for longterm storage. Canisters are easier to reseal than jars, which is why I consider jars longterm storage. The integrity of some foods are destroyed by vacuum sealing in bags - dry foods, moist foods (coconut, tomatoes, etc.), crunchy things, or light and airy things (cake, biscuits, breads etc.). Seal-a-meal has food storage containers that are good for storage of delicate foods. You place the entire plastic container in FoodSaver bag to vacuum-seal. The plastic containers have air holes in the lids that allows a complete vacuum-seal to prevent freezer burn. The rigid lids prevent the foods from being crushed. The containers can be put in the freezer after you vacuum seal them in FoodSaver bags. These are great for storage of things that might crush if using a bag. -Grainlady

Even cereal needs to be in a plastic or glass container....those little varmints will get into anything...I found mouse poop every where food had ever been ..the little critter was steady searching for any crumbs...

Since you are not moving you will not be interested in this hint but maybe someone who does move around will be...There are some things that just need to be in a particular place all the time and I hated picking them up and moving them every time you move so I solved that issue by velcroing baskets to certain places....For instance...I have a small basket about 2 inches X 7 inches wide on my night stand that holds my reading glasses, hand cream, tums, nail clippers etc etc and another on next to my captains chair up front...at the table, I have one , much larger, on each side of the table...one will hold his prescriptions and supplements, the salt and pepper, and mine on the other side, holds mine...the space between the two baskets hold napkins,,,It's nice that we don't have to clear the table every time we move..the baskets look nice and will hold enough that we can toss in whatever else we need . There is a basket on the counter top where we keep scissors, the dogs leash, tape, things we need to get to quickly and then there is a bin that we have taped to the bulkhead over the motor where we carry things like battery chargers. flashlights bulky items and on top of that another basket that has the phone charger and keys, wallet and change for tolls and lots of other things like glasses and clippers blah blah blah...couldn't get along without the baskets...

I have used those command hooks for similar things you can just take them down when you need to. I also got several of the metal shelf units and hooks etc that hang over the top of a door or a cabinet door those are really handy. I have one of those hooked over the cabinet door above his chair and one over mine he can hook his caps and stuff on his and I put my hats and other items on mine we can also hook the leash there. I have some that I put on the inside of the cabinets so they are not in the way but can store things in the space behind the door.

For my storage cabinets I bought plastic bins, actually they are dishwashing tubs, for a couple of dollars and put them in each cabinet then I can easily carry the bins in and out to fill them or get stuff in and out, plus it keeps everything in place and nothing goes rolling or flying around. I have them labeled so everyone knows what goes in each one.

I found at Lowes these very nice heavy metal baskets they are solid with a handle on each end, I put the rubber stickies on the bottom to keep them from sliding around, but they are so heavy they stay put. I have on on the counter in the bathroom and one stays on the dining table holding all the needed stuff.
They were in the section of Lowes with the kitchen stuff like the drawer inserts and liners.
Bungie cords come in very handy too we keep lots of them around. We bungie my wheelchair in place inside when we are traveling so it does not go crashing around. Also bungie the ice chests.
