Comments (16)7000ft, I am totally convinced you ought to write a book. Your family sounds very interesting and it sounds like you all work as a cooperative of sorts. How much of your food do you produce? The tomatoes that I grow are primarily for sauce, so I use Roma-type tomatoes. They are odd-looking, being long and quite large. The variety I grew this year was Super San Marzano. I've tried some others, but this one is the best. The sauce-type tomatoes are awesome for making sauce. They are very meaty with minimal juice and seeds. Making sauce is a breeze because you can skip the steps for squeezing the juice and seeds out. According to the catalogs, some varieties have pectin in them that helps to thicken the sauce. We ended up with 25 jars of sauce in the freezer. That is a record for us, so we are pleased! That's 25 dinners during ski season that I don't have to cook. :) I also grow a cherry tomato and some sandwich-type tomatoes. I've had good luck with Early Wonder, which is early yet tasty. (way better than early girl!) Inside the GH we enjoy our first tomatoes in mid-July. Without the GH we are lucky to get any red tomatoes at all. I'm sure it's the same for you. My gardening efforts are pretty much solo, but my husband was instrumental in building the GH and in helping look after things as needed. He is an expert at raising seedlings because I tend to travel a lot in the spring. He also built a root cellar and he is fully on board with our quest to grow as much food as possible. It's a bit of an oddball pursuit, so I'm happy that he's into it!...See MoreHow do you stay motivated and patient during this build?
Comments (13)gobruno! i decided i would change my mind on the (not very inexpensive) sofas i was about to order ...when i was on the phone with the salesperson! there i was, notes in hand looking at my fabric and layout and WHAM! all of a sudden i heard myself say, "let me call you back!" and i was back online looking at more sofas. and then i did it again ...changed my mind on the banquettes for the breakfast room AND THEN i moved on to my BED! it's a really good thing those are the only pieces i'm getting right now otherwise i'd be nowhere. i'm sure i am settled on the furniture for now and will order NEXT WEEK. ...i think. and i was just thinking this past week i should learn to sew! i'm not convinced i'll be good enough to want to sew my own curtains (always had them made and professionally hung) but then i tell myself "i'm not stupid. surely i can operate a little machine with a foot petal" ...but i have no patience which could impede my ability to take my time and do a good job. at least this was my experience when i had "home ec" in the seventh grade. we made gingham book bags and embroidered our initials on them. THAT is the extent of my experience with a sewing machine. old dog, new tricks? i dunno... how's the sewing going for you???...See MoreHow do you motivate yourself?
Comments (31)When I feel bogged down, and it seems that nothing I could do would make a dent; I do ONE THING. Well, that's what I intend to do anyway. One thing most usually leads to another and another, but if it doesn't...that's ok....I did the ONE THING I set out to do. Even if that ONE THING is taking a dish to the kitchen. Movement breeds motivation. I understand that's hard to do when you're in pain, but it's true just the same. You sound like you have a plan to talk to your dr. That's a great idea. I hope you get some relief. Something else I came to realize not too long ago...there are NO perfect people. No one has a spotless house all the time. No one is pain free all the time. I've forgiven myself for not being perfect. And, to top it off...I've been a lazy perfectionist ie procrastinator. If for some reason (time, money etc) I felt a job couldn't be done to my (perfectionist) satisfaction, I'd just put it off and put it off. HELLO!! JUST DO IT! Just because I couldn't get on my hands and knees and scrub every speck of dirt off that kitchen floor didn't mean I couldn't grab a mop and at least make it look better! Silly me! So, I guess what I'm saying is, forgive yourself for not getting everything done that you want to do and do what you can and be proud of youself for doing that. Those who love you probably know you are in pain and they don't care if your house is spotless. They want to spend time with you, not your house....See MoreHusband wants CONTROL of project
Comments (44)Heck with that, total_remodel! I'm single with 4 cats, 1 dog, and 2 foster Pugs. To add to that, babushka_cat.. getting to make your home exactly as you dream it not coming home to find someone drank all your wine just because there isn't any tequila buying furniture and things your size (5'3") and not having to accommodate anyone else (like a 6'5" stbx!) learning to honor your own BS detector -- and I don't mean "back splash" learning quality, learning safety, learning to enjoy learning what compromises you're willing to make with yourself to get what you want. And of course, learning not to whack the condescending look off the Plumber's face, who is humoring you as you explain the motion sensor faucet you want installed in your bathroom marble vanity, along with regular faucets so your cats can have water without driving you nuts to go turn it on. Then their eyes widen when you pull the faucet out of the box... Yes. I'm serious. And I'm paying you or someone else to install it right and the way I want it done. You choose if you want the job or not. The nut-case cat lady wants it? She's getting it. No trouble communicating here. And no question about who is in charge. hear me roar...See Morepolly929
