thanks for the HV link. The problem with Hudson Valley lights of this type is that they are WAAAAAYYY over my budget in price. And at this point, DH will croak if I tell him one more thing is over budget! The great thing about the fixtures I chose is that they were significantly less expensive than HV but with the same look and feel.

I think I would go with the 3rd one instead of the 1st one in ORB.

It is hard to tell from the photos and your descriptions. You are using the fixture in picture #2 over your sink. You want to know if the pictures of fixture #1 or #3 goes with what you chose--the fixture in picture #2.

Picture #1's finish (which you love) has been discontinued in brushed nickel but you can get it in ORB (still trying to figure out what ORB is, other than Operating Room B...) OK, I think ORB is a type of finish? Old Road Brass? Old Red Bronze? Still trying to figure ORB out.

What is the finish on the fixture you chose already? Since they look fairly close in the space in your kitchen, I would go with the one with that finish.

However, I have to tell you that I am not fond of fixture in picture #2 for your style of kitchen. It looks small for your kitchen (that could just be the picture) and they style doesn't seem to go. I love fixtures #1 for over the island and fixture #3 for over your sink. Since they are so close together, proximity wise, I think they look great.

Also, did you do an internet search to see if you can get the first picture in brushed nickel? If you know the name of the fixture and the manufacturer type it in a search engine and see what comes up. You may still be able to get it elsewhere.

You crack me up! ORB is "oil rubbed bronze." Yes, I have already purchased and have photo #2 fixture and there will be 2 of them over a raised bar that is on the far right side of the kitchen that you really can't see from these photos (they're the best I have right now on my camera, unfortunately). They are mini pendants and about 7" in diameter and will hang spaced out over the raised bar. I was hoping to add a touch of contemporary in with a touch of vintage but I may be botching that with these pendants! At least they were fairly inexpensive and I could replace them if I hate them over time!

Fixture #3 is the same diameter as #1 (14") so it would work over the bar in width.

And yes, I did an internet search for #1 but all I can find is the oil rubbed bronze finish.

I agree with mustbnuts to check the internet for the fixture.

I would also call the company who manufactures the light fixture to find out who they distribute to and see if they have any in stock (or even a floor sample). It is very cool and I understand why you are disappointed!

Well, I've just spoken with my lighting fixture sales person who is about the most helpful person I have ever encountered in a showroom! He suggested this one from Hudson Valley that actually isn't too far out of line with my budget. It comes in a satin nickel or oil rubbed bronze finish. I'm wondering if the satin nickel would look strange with the chrome of the island pendant. Would the oil rubbed bronze look okay since I'm doing oil rubbed bronze hardware in the island that sits directly below this light? Or would the satin nickel and chrome look okay together? I am so terribly bad at these decisions! I also included a photo of the pendant light in this post so you can see the two together.

Oh, I ordered almost the same pendant from Pottery Barn - currently on sale for $69 or 2 for $129! I loved the pendants, but they were just too large for my space and 8 ft. ceiling, so I returned them.

Thanks for the link! I actually saw those in the PB catalog awhile back and was admiring them! That will definitely make my short list too! The only thing I worry about now is the weight of the glass from these "pulley style" pendants weighing down the cord over time. The reason I say that is because my lighting sales guy called Hudson Valley this morning to see about alternatives to what I had originally chosen and they said they won't allow the pulley fixtures to have a shade greater than 8" in diameter because over time, they start sagging from the weight of the glass. Who knows if the PB fixture would do that--for that price, it might be worth trying!

I will say that the cord on the Pottery Barn pendant was thicker than I expected - as was the weight on the pulley. I would be surprised if there was any sagging, but possibly it is an issue over time. It was beautiful in person - I hope whatever choice you make works out!

I'm really thinking I might go with the PB fixture you suggested but I have a couple of questions, if you have a minute to answer them.

Which PB did you get--the one with the white shade or the all nickel shade? Was the nickel finish real shiny (like chrome) or mure muted? I just went and looked at my bar pendants and they are definitely shiny chrome! So I'm thinking a more muted satin nickel might not go so well but who knows. It's so hard to tell until they're in place!

nancy - if lagrant is unable to answer your questions, I have this fixture stored right now up at the farm and will be going there late tonight, so could answer your question regarding finish although I think it is more muted, not a shiny chrome. I got the one with the white shade.

it was brushed nickel - more like pewter - not at all like polished chrome....

Now, it could be hard to tell in the pictures, but I think your cabinet door hardware is brushed as well.

With the fixtures that close together, I would definately do the same finish on all 3 fixtures.

Nancy, I agree with susanilz5. I know that makes it harder for you, but I think the same finish would give you the best look with the layout of your kitchen.

I like the original one you picked the best - the second one you picked that is all fixture/no glass isn't as nice - don't know why, but the first one, I think is nicer - the pottery barn is nice, but I still like what you picked best - given you mixed hardware you can go with either one, but I'd keep it consistent in that room given it's open - we're doing almost everything except the faucet and that may get switched at some point (but we have a SS sink) in ORB but not all ORB is the same, which creates another problem. I can't imagine with enough digging someone doesn't have two hidden somewhere in a stock room.

I have two chrome trimmed light fixtures in our formal living room. I just found out this week that the ceiling fan (also supposed to be chrome) was actually brushed nickle. I looked TERRIBLE with the other fixtures, like a bad mistake. I had to spend a fortune to find a ceiling fan quickly that worked with art deco lighting, and was chrome as well. Don't make that mistake :)

I would not mix finishes of any like items. All faucets in chrome...fine, all nickle, fine, but two in chrome and one in nickle...it looks like you ran out of money, or didn't pay attention to details.

I also have had antique fixtures like your dream fixture. The weights and cloth wires can handle a lot of weight. They're gorgeous, and get only better with time. I'd go for them, but keep all of the lighting finises the same. It's ok to have different items that are different finishes...ie pulls one finish, faucets another, but if you do big ticket items like this in different finishes...it would be a mistake ;(

Many thanks to all of you who have responded! I was amongst a group of friends this weekend who think I ought to revert back to the original pendant over the island that I chose months ago. I loved it when I found it (see below) but then someone said they worried it might be difficult to clean with all the grooves so I steered away from it. Anyone have a fixture like this? Are they a bear to clean? I have crystal hardware on my upper cabinetry so I think the glass would tie in nicely to that but I don't want it to look grungy all the time, you know?

Would love thoughts and opinions one final time before I take the plunge with something!

Once again, I toatally agree with igloo. I wouldn't use nickel and chrome together. Lots of folks can't see the difference between them (my husband can't), but I sure can. (Now igloo--get outa my head! I don't have room for chicken mosaics in here.)

I love the pendant you just posted, and I had to laugh re: cleaning. Ok, I admit I'm a rebel! I put everything I possibly can into the dishwasher for cleaning. It is glass, right? I put all my glass light shades in the dishwasher when grungy. (I also put the family's crocs in there, but that is a different post...)
