The electricians are due to come switch out ceiling fans and light fixtures in about 2 weeks, so I need to start ordering some things.

The table in the kitchen is the only dining area in the cabin. We will have a small round table for 4, the space is about 12' by 9' and is where the front door enters. It is a cabin and the wood is staying. I'd like a modern cabin look if there is such a thing. I'm adding some arts and crafts details as I think it works well in a cabin. The furniture in the pic is not ours, but is the table size is about what we will have.

I did some research and based on the size of the room the fixture should be under 24" around. Ceiling is vaulted so I can play with height of fixture.

I'm trying to decide between a chandelier or pendant type fixture.

Floor plan, front door is the one closest to kitchen table.

I actually like the Pearson Black Iron. Maybe it is the clean lines and simplicity.

While I love #5, the Pearson, in general I wonder how a round table with a large(in comparison to table size since you say it is small) round chandelier would feel in your home. If you can imagine that and love it I say that's perfect. I think the repeating circles would bother me so I would go for #4 or something along those lines with a more square shape.

There are many, many sizes and finishes for recessed lighting fixtures. Reno's suggestion is a good one, ie, use fixtures with smaller trim. If you search Lightolier, Prescolite or other major manufacturers you will get a sense of what's available. Ask your builder what brand he is using and check their web site for options. As long as the ceiling finish and the light fixture trim finish are similar (and not contrasting with one another as described by another poster), they will be visually compatible. For maximum coordination, the interior of the can should also be similar (but this may affect the lighting intensity of the fixture). Good luck with your project.

I think your friend must have gone to a very classy school! Seriously, our memories and associations are so very individual. Two gals can sit on a park bench and some guy walks by. The first gal thinks he's real cute and the second says he doesn't do a thing for her. It can be because of something like he has a nose like the first gal's brother whom she adores (but she doesn't recognize this in him when she sees him) and he walks like a guy who used to always be rude to the second gal (but she doesn't recognize this in him either). Our subconscious minds are always making associations and we're not aware of it. So maybe your friend was looking at a light that was vaguely like that when a teacher was yelling at her some time -- or maybe she saw it on TV in an old movie just when the villain walked in. Who knows? And if we have memories from past lives in there somewhere, all bets are really off. I think THIS was the most typical school house light, although someone is calling THIS a schoolhouse light and I never saw one that fancy (how cute with the painting on it!). The fixture is soooo Art Deco and would be perfect for you. There are many similar shaped ones (thogh yours is unique) on eBay, and people are fighting to get them: 1930'S ART DECO CEILING LIGHT CHANDELIER HOBNAIL SHADE I think the important thing is that YOU love it. You're the one who is going to be living with it. If you surround yourself with things that make you happy, your life will be happier. But if it helps, I think it's a neat fixture. I love the bowl on it.

sorry i don't have pics. i'll try to describe a little better. The floor is an ink blue tile. i've painted the walls a very very light yellow and they are partially tiled in white. like i said, the cabinents are white and i've hung a framed white mirror. the hardware on the cabinent is satin nickel with glass knobs. thanks for your opinioin kathy. this is not for over the sink though. it hangs in the middle of the outer room, which is why i'm approaching it as maybe not a huge deal as far as a light source since i will have something like you posted above the sink--in satin nickel i would guess.

shades - that too is a beautiful shade! i looove that glass tube that goes up the chain. how do you think it'd look if the tube thingy was snug up to the ceiling plate? I wonder if I could get another top 'plate' part that would angle with the ceiling... in the DR it couldn't hang down - that tubey part would probably be the most it could drop down. even that back hall has an angled ceiling! darn, there'd be more room there for it to hang down a bit. how would it look if that plate part (and the knobby thing) were pewterish? antique brassish? if it couldn't be adjusted for the angled ceiling it'd hang crooked tho.

LOL, I didn't even realize it but I did pick a bunch of circles. I do love circles so while subliminal, it is a pattern!

DH is saying he may make a table, so I have no idea what shape it will be. Grrr, maybe I need to wait on the light fixture until I have the table?

Looking at the size of the fan that's there, I would think you could go larger than 24" if you wanted (how big is the fan?). The footprint of the room might call for a smaller fixture, but there is so much volume surrounding it, I worry that some of those will be dwarfed in the space.

I might look at a simple candle chandelier that is very open but a little larger. It would look great with the round table or a square or rectangular one.

Olychick, I think you are right. 24" seems so small to me in that space. I think the fan is 48"

Also since its kind of an entry light as well I feel like a bigger light would be warranted.

Love your place and light picks. Did you check shades of light . Com? They have a few bigger choices.

This is the fixture that we chose for our entry, and we love it. It combines a rustic and modern feel, IMO, and I think it could work nicely in your space. At 28" it may be a little larger than you're considering, but it doesn't have an overpowering presence.

I like both #5 and #3 (the Pearson black and the Minka) for staying with the Arts and Crafts look. I actually like #1 also but it looks a little small. I agree you could go a bit beefier with your fixture since you have those soaring ceilings. Maybe not too much wider since you aren't set on your table yet. With all the straight lines of the wood, I think the circular fixtures are fine.

I like all 3 that jtl posted, but didn't check the sizes. That one with bling might be really fun to contrast all the rustic wood.

I like the last one you posted, the first one jtl posted, the one olychick posted and something like IdaClaires. I like round fixtures with round tables, but especially when you have so many linear things going o that room. Just the wood has so many straight lines that something like the Minka hits overload very quickly. I would look at something simple, with some softess (curves) and 24" does seem small. Possible, but many fixutes will be 26-28" and I think you could easily do that in a simple fixture -- maybe 30". As pointed out, the room has a lot of volume, high ceilings -- and if you go with a simpler design, it can be a little larger without feeling too large or heavy for the space.
