Opinions on this LIght Fixture

We just moved into our first house and are trying to update the guest bathroom without totally re-doing it yet. We've gotten new fixtures, paint etc.

The bathroom is split in 2 rooms. The outer room is the sink and the inner room is the toilet and shower. In the inner room, there are 2 recessed lights.

In the outer room, there is a HIDEOUS light fixture/chandelier and an equally hideous over the sink fixture (that we have already removed.)

I picked this up today but am unsure if i'm going to keep it. i know it probably won't let off a ton of light, but i figured it may be ok since there will also be a fixture over the sink. just wanted something with a little character.

We painted the cabinents white, got a white framed mirror . .so thought this may look cute. my husband isn't a huge fan but he's not exactly mr decorator. he usually likes it once it's done. so wanted to get some opinions of people who are decorators!

feel free to be honest, it is returnable until tomorrow! btw . .got it at an outlet so much cheaper than what's quoted here. got it in glossy white.

Sorry, I don't like it. And I think you will end up replacing it within a year if you use it.
For the sink area I would go for a simple strip light, the kind that uses unshaded round soft white bulbs.

I think the light is neat but hard to say without seeing the room...do you have any pictures of your room?

There are many, many sizes and finishes for recessed lighting fixtures. Reno's suggestion is a good one, ie, use fixtures with smaller trim. If you search Lightolier, Prescolite or other major manufacturers you will get a sense of what's available. Ask your builder what brand he is using and check their web site for options. As long as the ceiling finish and the light fixture trim finish are similar (and not contrasting with one another as described by another poster), they will be visually compatible. For maximum coordination, the interior of the can should also be similar (but this may affect the lighting intensity of the fixture). Good luck with your project.

I think your friend must have gone to a very classy school! Seriously, our memories and associations are so very individual. Two gals can sit on a park bench and some guy walks by. The first gal thinks he's real cute and the second says he doesn't do a thing for her. It can be because of something like he has a nose like the first gal's brother whom she adores (but she doesn't recognize this in him when she sees him) and he walks like a guy who used to always be rude to the second gal (but she doesn't recognize this in him either). Our subconscious minds are always making associations and we're not aware of it. So maybe your friend was looking at a light that was vaguely like that when a teacher was yelling at her some time -- or maybe she saw it on TV in an old movie just when the villain walked in. Who knows? And if we have memories from past lives in there somewhere, all bets are really off. I think THIS was the most typical school house light, although someone is calling THIS a schoolhouse light and I never saw one that fancy (how cute with the painting on it!). The fixture is soooo Art Deco and would be perfect for you. There are many similar shaped ones (thogh yours is unique) on eBay, and people are fighting to get them: 1930'S ART DECO CEILING LIGHT CHANDELIER HOBNAIL SHADE I think the important thing is that YOU love it. You're the one who is going to be living with it. If you surround yourself with things that make you happy, your life will be happier. But if it helps, I think it's a neat fixture. I love the bowl on it.

I like the last one you posted, the first one jtl posted, the one olychick posted and something like IdaClaires. I like round fixtures with round tables, but especially when you have so many linear things going o that room. Just the wood has so many straight lines that something like the Minka hits overload very quickly. I would look at something simple, with some softess (curves) and 24" does seem small. Possible, but many fixutes will be 26-28" and I think you could easily do that in a simple fixture -- maybe 30". As pointed out, the room has a lot of volume, high ceilings -- and if you go with a simpler design, it can be a little larger without feeling too large or heavy for the space.

Double post from Building Home...I am getting ready to pick the lighting for the rough in. I am having a hard time deciding between Halo Recessed Can or Halo SLD Flush Down Light. Here are some links: Traditional Recessed Light (White trim piece) The can fixture for the traditional recessed light: Recessed Fixture OR The Halo Flush Light that attached into either a can fixture OR a 3.5" round light fixture box (smaller) Flush Mount I don't see a major difference in the appearance. I do not know which one provides better light --- which is subjective I imagine -- but overall, the flush mount ones offer higher lumen choices. The benefit of the recessed ones are easy to change trims, and bulbs, and more bulb options (different angles, brands, etc) and have an easy to adjust fixture (during rough in stage). The benefit of the flush mount is a lot more insulation in attic, easier to get air tight with tape or caulking, cheaper receptacle box (But more expensive fixture), smaller profile to get closer to a truss if needed for certain layout.

sorry i don't have pics. i'll try to describe a little better. The floor is an ink blue tile. i've painted the walls a very very light yellow and they are partially tiled in white. like i said, the cabinents are white and i've hung a framed white mirror. the hardware on the cabinent is satin nickel with glass knobs.

thanks for your opinioin kathy. this is not for over the sink though. it hangs in the middle of the outer room, which is why i'm approaching it as maybe not a huge deal as far as a light source since i will have something like you posted above the sink--in satin nickel i would guess.

I personally think that strip lighting with round bulbs is horribly dated looking, but you said for the area you're doing you need a pendant. While I'm not loving the one you selected, lighting can be very subjective. I would probably go with something like the link below.

I can't exactly visualize your room, but ink blue floors and yellow walls sound very pretty and I do happen to like the first fixture alot. So now you can be good and confused. I am just not sure or clear about that type of fixture in the bathroom, but if that pendant type will work then I think it's really a pretty one.

It is a pretty light fixture but, no, I don't see that light being a good one for a bathroom.

Post a picture and you will get lots of ideas.

I think you've made the right decision. I'm just not feelin' the pendant ... to be honest, it looks a little bit cheap to me. I know you can do much better. :-)

i'd prefer the other over the mirror light linked here and the pendant in nickel to match your other fixtures.

I don't like the open bulbs showing.

I'm sure you'll find something that works and is at a good price.
