Comments (155)We live in N.J. and did the bulk of our remodel last summer, but it was a full year to get to the point weÂre currently at. We were without a stove for 10 months, and without a sink for 8 months. We took out a wall to create one large space-$0 The electric in this wall was moved to an adjoining wall-$0 Laid cypress wide plank flooring-approx $300 Cherry cabs, Medallion, cherry-$4100 GE Café dual fuel-$1700 Kobe hood-$700 Tikor sink-$150 Kohler Simplice faucet-$130 Island (a repurposed 2 piece hutch)-$300 I am very proud of this! ï Custom cherry island top-$800 We installed this ourselves. Cable lights above island and under cab lights-$240 Fridge bought 3 years ago as a scratch and dent-$900 Dishwasher bought new 4 years ago-$0 A very generous gift! Granite counter-$2200 Our remodel took so long because we did all of the work except for running the LP line(stove), installing the granite, and making the cherry island top. The backsplash and a custom pantry unit (to be built next to fridge) are currently on hold as DH lost his job wayyyyy back in Sept.(right after we had paid for our remodel!) I love, love, love this post, but it takes me an excruciatingly long time to load it as my internet is dial up.Ugh! Good luck to all of you embarking on or in the middle of your remodels! May your dollar go far!...See MoreCan you do a white kitchen on a moderate budget?
Comments (14)We saved on our 'white' kitchen (which is probably turning into a brown kitchen but that's another story) by using Conestoga RTA cabinets (Highly recommend Brian Long/Cabinet Joint). DH and I assembled them together and then had our builder install most of them for us. I think we spent ~22K for perimeter cabinets, island cabinets, desk area, 2 floor to ceiling bookshelves, and then cabinets in two other rooms (pantry and mud room). This included custom cabinet dimensions and drawer sizes and heights, as welll as 18" uppers. Oh yes, trimwork too and shipping costs. (I'd buy unfinished wood and paint it myself next time for the trim work). It's a big space and I estimate we saved between $8000 - $15000 (comparing other quotes). Of course, money saved on the cabinets ends up being spent elsewhere.... And as always, when you DIY, everything takes so much longer. Regarding white kitchen - beware having too much white. You may find it 'blah'. We are going with a dark brown backsplash to ground the room. Our floors are light oak. This is quite different from the white/grey kitchen I was originally planning. Current state: note how the cabinets blend in with the ceiling and light countertop. Closeup of cabinets - please ignore bottom trim piece which needs to be re-done. Eventually, we'll replace the trash pedal with something white. Backsplash idea (this is photoshopped). The darker colors work so much better than the lighter ones, in this space....See MoreHelp designing farmhouse/traditional kitchen with 10' ceilings-
Comments (29)wow- Sophie. Thank you for that information. I will try to avoid using the term 'farmhouse' if it offends folks but I think you could make a similar argument for almost every post on houzz so it seems to me a bit irrelevant for this type of public forum. I have designers- several of them- with great reputations in their respective fields. Unfortunately, since everyone is so busy, if you want attention to details, I have found it is essential to review all drawings myself (civil, structural, architect, and even the geotech and survey) and look for issues. I have found an overabundance of them- some very serious- that I have personally corrected probably saving about $65,000 at this point with no change in the house design. For this particular design issue (ceiling height), I was not presented with the option of exploring different ceiling heights or given a preference for whether or not I like large crown molding etc. The 10' ceiling was plunked down by an architect on the drawings and now it is near impossible to change as we have our permits and in our city- changes are not only expensive but would mean a return to the planning department and public review. My research and questions and legwork are definitely making my project much better than leaving everything up to designers - nobody cares about 'your' project as much as you do....See MoreStove Location - Peninsula Corner?
Comments (75)On the top right the distance is 64.5" and the bottom right the distance is 52". Yes! After much thought my husband and I agreed that 'getting rid' of two doors makes the most sense. In this design, the refrigerator will be placed where the former door to the front porch was. We decided that it was fine to get rid of this door because the porch it opens to has another access point and faces a road....See Morepharaoh
