Please help with Italian Farmhouse kitchen design
Comments (22)The "real Italian farmhouse" above makes me think about Uncle Thorvald's kitchen. More minimal and functional than you'd expect. I keep trying to remember a food movie that shows an Italian kitchen in the countryside...called "The Story of Boys and Girls" (link below). It was set in abt the 1930s mebbe 40s, had a boy and girl who were rural + urban mix who were getting married. The rural farmhouse family cooked and cooked and cooked for the engagement party within an absolutely spare rural kitchen. Whitewashed. I have no idea what it's like in the Italian countryside today. [hijack begins here] Anyway, Sabjimata, those are indeed pulls. Richelieu pulls, which are among the items I can't forget from my former (abandoned) designs in earlier evolutions of my formerly Gustavian kitchen design. Now that I think about it, maybe I should go back to this pull in my dream plans. Although I've abandoned the modern bimetal expensive pulls (see the thread about Hunter's Wife's Revenge), now that the Hunter is back he's muttering about helping out a guy who has deer eating up his garden and maybe we should just get a few more DNR permits for DH so he can help out this poor guy and .... on and on....I'm so bummed that I can consider $20 per pull right now because I'm eating venison and upland birds for the duration. And besides the "faux iron" pulls I'm drawn to which are in sorta pewter with matching "faux iron" knobs in the same elaborate and funky historical mode as the mega-sized item above. Gotta think on this. The new range is already a done-deal. [self-absorbed "I'm a jerk" mode off] I am still not sure what the original poster wants from her Italian farmhouse kitchen. Faux Italian farmhouse is fine with me--no, change that, it's GREAT with me, as long as it pleases her. There are a lot of Italians who know no more than I (Am. Swede) know about the subject of the Italian countryside but we sure know a thing or two about olives, wine, noodles, wine, garlic, wine. Go have fun, nollie_gardener. You have a world of choices and adventurous nutty thinking ahead of you and it should be a great trip. Don't forget to write. Here is a link that might be useful: Boys and Girls movie should anyone need to order it...See MoreTurning traditional kitchen to 'farmhouse' - need help
Comments (15)Our friends had a great KD who took their kitchen from blah to absolutely beautiful and kept their stained cabinets on the perimeter. Their perimeter cabinets also have the cathedral arch and you don't even notice that now. Their L-shaped layout is exactly like yours except that their frig is to the right of their range and they had a kitchen desk where your frig wall is. They kept their hardwood floor. Here's a few things that their KD did. Changed out the double stainless sink for a white short-apron Kohler Whitehaven / Added an ORB touch faucet / Added white subway tile backsplash/ Removed the stained island, enlarged it substantially with painted gray cabinets and added a Sharp MW drawer and trash in the island / Added large dark lantern pendants over the island /Removed laminate countertops and added marble look quartz / They had an electric stove with the MW above and changed it to a stainless gas range with a stainless slant hood /Added stainless frig/ Kitchen desk was converted to a coffee and beverage bar / Removed panels in the upper cabinets that had been above the desk to lighted glass mullions / Removed desk and added beverage and wine cooler. I see that you also have additional wall space on your sink wall as they did. The KD had a cabinet maker match the stain and added an extra base cabinet there. Their trash had resided there previously. My neighbor also had a similar situation with 30" wall cabinets. Her KD added stacked cabinets above to the ceiling. Huge beautiful change....See MoreNew Build Kitchen Design Colour choices: Dark Blue Farmhouse Kitchen
Comments (75)If I had a dollar for every time I heard "I've never seen that done before" and "everyone else does/has...." I agree with cpartist. Having the hood, shelves and counter stools wood will be a good balance, along with a light floor, backsplash and walls. Between the kitchen and laundry room/back hallway in our last house, I had a floor to ceiling black hutch. No windows, only light from laundry room window (kitchen was in center of house), and the black hutch was not a hole of doom and gloom when the hallway light was off. One thing to consider is taking aways one wall cabinet on each side of the range hood to visually open up and lighten that area just a bit. What is happening elsewhere in the kitchen area, like around the corner of the far right wall? I currently have black soapstone counters on the F&B Blue Gray cabinets (walls painted the same color) with a counter to ceiling scalloped soapstone backsplash behind the range. It's countered with light French oak wood floors and light ceiling. Taking chances can pay off if executed well, but you will have to listen to a few naysayers along the way....See MoreState of the Art Farmhouse Kitchen Design
Comments (12)I really enjoyed that. I also notice that a lot of the same concepts were in use for that kitchen as are in use modernly. We just have different things to store/access/do, so the positioning of elements changes, somewhat. But, note that baking centers are still a thing in custom kitchens for people who bake. And an area to SIT and process produce for the freezer/canner is genius. I sometimes miss my Mom's kitchen table, which was close enough in that she would mount her Squeezo on it, or I'd sit and shell peas, etc. I actually have my grandmother's Hoosier-style cabinet. I don't store flour in it, anymore, because it can be a problem for pests. Although it does also highlight the tendency for excessively specialized elements to out-date more than a simple drawer or cabinet might....See Morelesliekatzman
