Hardwood - What width boards?

I tried posting this in floors but didn't get much feedback so I hope you don't mind my posting it here.

We are getting hardwood floors on the entire first floor and upstairs hallway in our home. We currently have red oak in our kitchen and entry way, and the rest is carpeted.

We have an active family with kids and dogs. We are leaning towards select hickory (they are coming in and laying it, sealing it -- not prefinished) and are debating whether we would be happier with 4" boards or a mix of 3/4/5" boards. The cost is the same.

We are also considering red birch - but can only get that in 3.25 and it's not as hard as hickory.

Any thoughts, advice? Appreciate it!
