window treatment for sliding glass door??

In the dining area of our house, there's a picture window and a sliding glass door with vinyl blinds. We want to replace the blinds with wood blinds that match the rest of the house, which would work for the picture window but wondering what we should do for the sliding glass door? Should we get vertical wood blinds to match the blinds for the picture window or should we get a different window treatment for the sliding glass door and stick with the wood blinds for the picture window? Thanks in advance.

oh my gosh, I came here for the very first time today to ask the exact same question.

we're having a sliding door installed in our new kitchen. I have absolutely no clue what sort of products are available to use. I'd love some direction.

What are your needs for the WT? Looks, privacy, light filtering, block out? Since it's the dining room, a pic might help to visualize the space and your own style. I have 2 sliders backyard facing. The one in the kitchen/family has no treatment and I prefer it that way; in our master bedroom we did layered treatment with a double traverse rod with center opening pinch pleats on top and sheers below for light filtering/privacy--above that I plan to hang a valance when DH gets around to it. As I wanted the center opening, I took them about 15" beyond the door frame so when open they stack back behind the door. Before I had them all go to one side, but I like the symmetry of this arrangement better. If you do decide on a fabric treatment you can tie it in and dress up the wood blinds with a coordinating valance or roman shade. There are other options for vertical blinds (some with sheer material in between), bamboo, etc. Check out the JC Penny website for other options.

What purpose would the door covering serve? Privacy? Light control? Decorative only? I would never use vertical blinds--I just don't like them. So that leaves either curtain panels on a rod with enough fullness to cover the entire span of glass, or some sort of Roman shade installed high up on the molding or wall (if you need privacy and/or light control). If it's decorative only, then curtain panels that cover part of the glass/frame, but that can be pulled back far enough to open the door.

Depends on the budget, but I would put slider/plantation shutters on that slider door. Takes up less room than drapery and more control over light. With all the heavy, bulky furniture, I would try eliminating one piece and adding a chair if that seating is even needed. You didn't ask about that, but puffy furniture gives a cramped feeling to most spaces. If the budget doesn't allow for this sliding glass door plantation shutter arrangement, then keep drapery very simple and don't use grommet style because they take up 6-8" of additional space in the room to slide back and forth. Take down the curtain rod and remove the painters tape. Since you don't need privacy, find some art that will fit on the wall by the light switch and the wall at right angles to the right side of the door.

Hi - thanks for the response. I did go ahead and get HD Luminettes, outside mount, for the family room sliders. Will be doing inoperable side panel drapes in the living room. Hoping it will look ok since it's different. The rooms are separate though. I could always do the Luminettes in the living room too but it's kind of a waste of money as we don't get direct sun that way and I don't see that I'd ever use them.

Buffetgirl, if you haven't purchased your slider yet, may I suggest the blinds inside the glass? It works and is easy to keep clean. Then, you can decide about framing out your door the way you want it.

redbazel- that is the window of my dreams- possibly next year or so , hoping the house and condo sell- with the scarey news reports on selling houses right now...... you can get many different colors with the 'inside' blinds, but I do not know if any 'patterns'.

Drapes, Roman shades, bamboo, topper only, vertical blinds, formal, casual -- what appeals to you? Do you have a fading problem on your carpet or furnishings from that window?

We have 2 sliders, on one I have insulated drapes which work well in the winter, on the other I have a layered look.

I like the idea of the blinds between the panes of glass but the pocketbook does not. :(
