Not knowing what you are willing to accept (used,vintage/antique vs new) Not knowing exactly what you are looking for makes it more of a guessing game. But for a vintage/antique piece, if you have antique stores near youm you might find something reasonably priced there. And maybe you might come across someone who specializes in that style look of furniture who may have connections on where to buy from.

Our store has multiple dealers who rent space in the mall and each is separate /independant of the other. So if your local antique malls are anything like that, it may turn out to be an extended search over a period of time. Inventory is hit and miss and new inventory can come in at any given moment so you have to keep checking back.

You might also research your area and find out who does local estate sales and try to go to those and even try Auctions as that might be a place to come across something like you are looking for.

Also have you considered searching Ebay? I just searched for french style beds and one came up with the auction at $399, with no bids and they would ship using freight shipping. There are others as well, quite varying in price. Do you have an inspiration pic? would love to see it

Andre Originals Furniture out of New Jersey but ship anywhere through decorators or if you have a business they will ship to you. Very affordable and probably tons of it somewhere for resale. They have been around for probably 80 years.

Thanks for the responses. I would consider vintage/antique, but I want a king size and sometimes that's hard to find in antique beds. I'll check out Andre Originals and see if they have a Website.

I dont know if you mean metal, but I always think of these guys. I have two daybeds I got from them, both have held up very well.

My computer is going wonky and I don't know what happened to my last post last night. It's hard to describe exactly what I mean by French, but some of them include cane in the headboard and footboard, sleigh beds, ornate (Roccoco?) type beds where the headboards gradually taper up with scrollwork on them, upholstered pieces with a French look.

I did find a few possibilities last night. One of them was at Ballard (thanks, Chibimimi!).

I bought a French style, caned headboard (queen) from Ballard about 11 years ago as a temporary fix. We had just moved house and our new bed was so completely wrong for the room that I put it in a kid's room and bought the one from Ballard's, thinking to replace it once I knew what direction we were going in the MBR. I was surprised at the quality--- better than average--- and the appearance, which is very good. Eleven years later I have not replaced it, as it looks great, has worn as well as any bed we've ever had, and especially since our next bedroom could not take a footboard. (would have blocked access to a deck door) I dont know what they are like now, but am very satisfied with the one I bought years ago!

I know just the style of Louis XVI bed you mean tammy. At Stan Hywet Hall in Akron, Virginia's(one of the daughters) bedroom has such a bed and matching pieces. Just for reference sake, I wish I had a photo of it for you and to post here; but I'm not sure I could find it. Hers is a creamy white color.

We just purchased a King sleigh bed from Bassett furniture for just over $500 at 50% off. It was just delivered and the quality seems fine and it matches the rest of our Ethan Allen British Classics bedroom pieces perfectly. We had planned to get the EA bed for about $2,700 but there were some details I wasn't crazy about with the style. We saw this one in an ad a few weeks ago at 50% off and decided to give it a look. My feeling is that a bed does not get a lot of wear (not like a table or chest of drawers) so the quality may not be top notch, but it looks and feels just fine. We've only had it a few days, but we're feeling like we got an amazing deal.

Schoolhouse, yes, that is one of the types I'm considering. And Ballard's has something similar for a very reasonable price. And I was thinking the creamy white color as to me it would look sort of aged, and then I've got two different colors of wood pieces in the room already and I figured the off-white wouldn't clash with those.

Hopmom, I'll go check out Bassett's sleigh beds. I've been considering one from Ethan Allen's Maison line as I have a lot of pieces from their former Country French line.

Here are my top contenders, along with the Ethan Allen bed of which I wasn't able to copy and paste a pic, but I provided a link. I've been planning on getting an EA Maison bed for a while since all my other pieces are EA Country French, but I like all these other beds now too! I really like the ornate Rococo one, but I'm almost afraid it might overpower an average-size bedroom. Thanks for everyone's input. Now I just need to decide which one I want to get.

I agree, the Ballard bed would be a good choice for the cane style you want.

I like the two cane choices the best. As you say you have an average sized bedroom and a king bed, I'd also be concerned the rococo bed would be too overpowering.

Can you post a pic of yoru bedoom and the existing furniture?

Tammy you don't say what size. Have you gone to any auctions~my local auction house always has a few. Full or twin sizes are the usual standard, but a pair of twins might make a king(??), and a full can be extended to fit a queen mattress. They're never more than a few hundred dollars w/carving and taller than most headboards~very pretty and 'Frenchie'. ;o)

valinsv, I can't take a picture of the room because I don't have it yet! LOL! I've got an offer in on a condo, and I'm still in the waiting period to see if it's accepted.

Tammy: I hope your offer on the condo comes through!! How exciting for you. Do you know what size your room will be? I have a sleigh bed and I like it, though only a queen and still it does add quite a bit of extra bulk to my bedroom. I can see where the cane style will add less bulk and/or visual weight to a smaller sized bedroom, especially the one without the footboard. Pattycakes suggestion to put together a pair of twins to make a king is an interesting idea, though I'd hold off on finalizing the bedframe until you close on the condo, esp. if considering a more expensive one.

valinsv, I hope it goes through too! It's a short sale, so our realtor said those can really take a while until you hear back from the seller's bank as to whether they will accept your offer. I've got fingers crossed here. If I do get that condo, my bedroom would be fairly large.

I'm kind of torn because I've been checking practically every Craigslist east of the Mississippi (I'm not really kidding!) for an EA Country French sleigh bed. Haven't found one yet, but EA does have the one from their Maison line on clearance, so it's not a bad price. I want one of each of the beds...plus the antique one Patty cakes posted!
