Show me your corners?

I'm back. Finished my kitchen renovation a year ago and it turned out great - due in large part to the great ideas and suggestions I got here. Now I'm starting to plan a new kitchen for our lake house - maybe retirement home. One of the things I thankfully avoided with the kitchen in our main home was an inside corner. Had one before and hated it. I don't think I can avoid it this time.

Anyone have a clever idea for dealing with this awkward space? Please share!

Well, ours was a new build, not a reno, but I also wanted an L-shaped kitchen with no corner. The architect made my little "hidey hole" area in the corner. My desk is the "L." On the right side of the area (behind the stand mixer) is the door to my pantry which runs behind the range wall. If you have the existing room to do this it is a good solution. I really love that little tucked away area!

There are several wall mount versions that are very small. I used one from Duravit in a previous house. I've also seen one called Minette from American Standard, that's very small. Kohler has at least one, Renovator's supply (rensup.com) has several, ranging in price from about $100 to multiple hundreds.

That's a mid demo shot. I bought the house partly because of that corner sink. Some romantic housewife gene popped up and thought "won't it be nice to wash dishes and look at that view!" Mind you, she (the romantic housewife gene) and I, so rarely wash dishes that it was a goofy thought, but all of that light streaming into the kitchen, winter and summer, and the gorgeous view, just call to you to take a shot at dishwashing :oP In the new kitchen the sink will be in the same location, but everything else changes. We've also inset it 3 inches on each side. I can't imagine having lovely windows like that an not setting your sink there. With a view...why would you chose to look at a wall instead?

Corners can offer unique opportunities. Here are two corners in our Family Room. One provides an out-of-the-way location to display our antique propeller. The sofa in the other corner has a slight curvature and behind we placed a sofa table to hold a lamp. As a friend for Jim's statues I have the following from Constance, Germany. The story I heard was that a renown local sculptor was asked to make something for the waterfront by the city council. He agreed with the proviso that he could make whatever he wanted, and they would have no right to withdraw their approval. They agreed and got the following which stands on a slowing rotating platform on the edge of Lake Constance The statue supposedly depicts a "courtesan" from history who reputedly had the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the Pope, figuratively, in the palms of her hands. The naked, wizened, shriveled figures in her up-stretched hands are wearing a crown and a pope hat respectively.

I'm almost certain that I'm giving up the corner so as to have larger drawers on either side. Though we would be able to access it from our porch so it wouldn't be a total waste.

I too was willing to give up corners for larger drawers and upper cabs. I have a small kitchen so I carefully planned where all my stuff would go. The tricky part of not using corner storage was finding a place for small appliances. I put them in a bottom drawer and over the fridge.

nini804, that's incredible! What a great use of space. We felt we had to keep our corners. Old house, not much room to change. But wow, I would never leave that kitchen. LOVE love love it!

Thanks nini804! Your kitchen is beautiful and that sure is a cool idea. Not sure if I have enough space to do something like that but I will play around with it.

Our kitchen is small at 8'x12'.
As a result, and because of doorway issues, we ended up with 2 inside corners.
The rightside cabinet houses a super susan. The left side, because it's an offset cabinet, just has an L-shaped shelf.

nini - I LOVE that. I first saw something like that when we were looking for a home out in Las Vegas. The one floorplan had that and used it as a pantry...I fell in love with that house. It's so nice to see that incorporated into a home that someone is living it. I long for a house where I could have something like that.
