Choice #1 is my recommendation based on your description of what you are looking for. It is earthy and organic and picks up the wood in the cabinets beautifully. Perfect for MCM update. If possible, try a warmer grout color.

How do you feel about the larger Sumi-e tile? Same warm earthy colors but less grout.

Either way, I like #1 as well.

I looked at the larger tiles as well and like them. But there is something about the verticality of the stacked 1 x 2s and the informality of the sizing of that appeals to me. I think it seems more MCM to me and less "today."

As for the colors, I like (1) for how well it would go with the cabinets and (4) for the green it would bring in, and the thought it may be a bridge between the brown cabinets and the stainless hood, range and fridge.

The Sumi tiles are all beautiful to me and I don't think you can go wrong with either choice. Here's an off the cuff idea... if the grout is an issue for you, have you thought about installing the larger ones vertically?

That is a good thought. But I think it is all a bit too "neat" for me. I love the look of the tight, small-tile brick pattern, either vertically or horizontally. But I think it is a bit more "Dwell" and a bit less in keeping with the style of our home. If I had a gleaming Eichler in an MCM neighborhood in Cali, it might be just the trick. But out here in the woods I guess I'm looking for that perfect imperfection.

I've been looking off and on for backsplash tiles for about a year, knowing we're going to do the kitchen this fall. These are the first ones I've really loved, and I'll just have to choke down the $1,300 it's probably going to cost me(!)

I definitely like the larger Sumi-e tile. I think you'll enjoy it more long term due to the classic brick pattern. The other pattern is a bit more modern and may be look outdated in the long run. I'm sure whatever you decide on will be great in your new kitchen.

You may have already seen her kitchen, but Mom2reese used the brick tiles in ohara. It may help you out with your descision to see them installed.

I am usually a gloss girl, but in this case I like the matte. And I like the green/blue because it gives you more decorating options while staying with your natural theme. Earthy need not be beige. Ocean and sky are nice too! Either way, those are beautiful tiles.
