I really like your kitchen as is but i understand wanting a change I like the grey tones in your kitchen so maybe an unoiled soapstone or stainless counters. but it really looks nice already!

I'm not a fan of the tiled counter top. I'll never feel like it will be clean.

We just bought this place but are doing tons of work to it before we move in. The kitchen is the only room that doesn't need work, just not my style. It was built in 1929.

Your kitchen looks great, but I would also want to change out the counter and BS - I'm with you in hating tiled counters! But it's hard to give advice without knowing your tastes. There are so many different vibes you could emphasize... The current cabs/floor don't scream a particular style to me, so it's going to depend on what the rest of the house is like, and what you love... Modern? Farmhouse? Beachy? Formal? Urban casual? etc.

For the sake of suggestion, I would take advantage of the open plan by lightening up the space - it looks like the cabinets are pale, though the second picture has them darker than the first - change out the paint for an ivory or creamy white color, pick a stone slab you love, maybe a pale sandy gold to pair with the new stainless, and a nifty old-fashioned flat subway tile in the same tone as the paint to tie into the 1929 era of the house.

But really it depends on your preferences and the whole-house aesthetic.

Yes, your cabinets need soapstone countertops,(but I vote for oiled)! I love the rustic wood (hickory?) and hardware. Creamy subway tile, matte finish, but in a 2x6 or 2x8, a little craftsman/rustic. I really like the adorable island. You have some great elements already!

The house is a craftsman bungalow, might be a Sears home.

I think soapstone or a lighter colored granite then for the backsplash I would choose a crackled or beveled solid light tan/soft beige brick 3x6. My brother has a very simliar kitchen and he redid it last year and its the same coloring and it came out fantastic and the lighter colors really lightnened it up. I think its a pretty kitchen but needs something bright or a little crisper as contrast.

Scroll down on this link and check out these tiles.These have a great craftsman vibe. I don't know about price point but it gives a general idea. I have never seen that soapstone before. It is interseting and will look good with your cabs.

Oh, and Home Depot carries Daltile Modern Dimensions. They make a simple 2X8 tile that really inspire the craftsman look. I am thinking bisque or almond in the matte finish. Granite wise, Crema bordeaux would also work nicely with your floors. So many options....
