Jazzing up my Target foot stool

I have this little furry footstool from Target in my living room. I love it.
However, the legs are really light and all the furniture in the room is dark (dark oak and walnut) or black (coffee table legs are black metal). I am going to paint the legs of the stool black. At the same time, I was thinking it might look cool to have brass "caps" on the bottoms of the legs, but I can't find any that don't look too clunky. Maybe I could tape off the bottom 2" of each leg and paint them antique gold? It would certainly be less expensive. Maybe worth a try. What do you think?

go for it -- it's not an expensive piece so really I think you can do whatever you want.

I have last year's version from Target of exactly that. My only quibble is the white fur has become dingy and not responded to any attempts at cleaning or fluffing. May end up redoing that part eventually.

anything you do in black and gold will look great! Cool looking piece :)

Did you check ebay for casters? I found some very inexpensively there once.

Maybe it is location-specific. I'm in a suburb of Birmingham, AL. There are big red and yellow signs throughout the garden/patio department advertising a "temporary markdown". All of the seating and table, accessories, etc. Heck, I got a $20 gnome for $12. Maybe there is something up in the stores in our area -- a big redesign of the floor or something. I'll have to check out the one near my office tomorrow.

I knew you guys could appreciate a deal. Sorry they're sold out now for anyone that might have been interested. I didn't mean to hog 8 of them. Maybe I need to plan another kitchen remodel to accommodate these 8 stools. Seems like such a shame to let go of such a good deal just because I can't fit 8 of them at my 6 foot peninsula... LOL

Hi, I'm a Realtor, been going into other people's houses for a number of years, did a bit of property management, & here's what I've learned: Warm tones go with warm tones, & cool with cool. Bright white goes through periods when everybody wants it, & then after they've cleaned it for a year or so, nobody wants it! Plus, if a white is too "clean", it'll make furnishings look dingy. It's a cool-to-cold color, not inviting at all. (Think laboratories.) Warm colors are more inviting & they'll harmonize with the warm golden & brown wood floors. The medium-light warm neutrals will go with most people's stuff, & they'll go with the floors. The kitchen has the potential to be very charming. You might get some ideas by searching for images of kitchens in the 1900's or the 1940's... but there again, warm neutrals will probably be better for a rental. If the budget will stretch to new kitchen flooring, you might get rid of that cold-looking gray & replace it with a good grade of vinyl (Congoleum used to have a product that will outlast us all) in a warm color & a "vintage" pattern, or even install those linoleum squares like you see in school cafeterias. They would look appropriate for the age of the building, you can move the fridge without tearing the flooring, & that stuff lasts forever.

Exactly!! It is not the size of the vine that is at issue. The monster in my garden, Campsis 'Madame Galen' (same type of hybrid as the Summer Jazz series), was quite manageable size-wise. Much like the one described by Ken, I grew it as a single trunk to the top of a 6' fence and it was cut back each year to a pretty tight framework right at that point, It would develop into a healthy sized flowering canopy that kind of draped along the top of the fence but nothing outrageous or unmanageable about the top growth at all. It was the proliferation of root shoots that was the major problem and this seems to be the primary complaint with any trumpet vine: after about the third year - once a good root system has developed - the plant sends out dozens of root suckers constantly, and to a considerable distance. In my case, they came up in a grassy area on one side of the fence and up between concrete pavers on the courtyard side of the fence. It was easy to just mow the ones in the lawn to keep them in check but took a long time and some major demolition to get the ones out of the paved area. While this hot, new, award winning vine may not grow to a huge size, there is nothing in the literature or the patent documentation to lead one to believe that it will not eventually sucker ferociously........just as all other trumpet vines do. And that's the big problem!!

Go to Michaels or AC Moore, and get the gold leaf sheets.

(seal it first, then do the adhesive, apply the gold leaf, dry, seal and you are done!)

I've just done faux bamboo metal X stools. Oh boy, are they gorgeous! (your stool would be easy because it is smooth!)

This footstool is about the furry. You don't want to distract from that with brass caps; it doesn't need it. Painting the bottom gold may be too fussy, and could cheapen the stool. May be great if you leaf the entire leg.

Lily, that's what I sort of wondered, whether the gold tips might be too much.

For now. I have painted the legs black. Sorry this pic is dark, but the dog seems to like it.

I would leave the black legs just as they are. They are kind of sexy but not over the top. NO on the gold feetsies !

that is the best!! I think small gold feet would be fine; would still love to see tiny casters if you could find them. Love the "cousin it" reference; had forgotten all about him!

Maybe it's just me, but I have a thing about footstools and ottomans not being taller than a coffee table. If I add casters, that will make it taller than the table. As it is, it almost looks taller but that's because the fur is all fluffed up!

I may still try the painted-on faux caps...worse case scenario, I just repaint over them.

RE: fluffing up the fur... I use an old cat brush with wire teeth to fix my faux fur. Maybe that could work?
