The fireplace isnt balanced to me. Could you put the armoire into the corner instead of beside the fireplace or would that take up too much of the room. Then you could place something smaller where you have the armoire now to balance the 3 smaller items you have in the corner. Have you thought of putting your speaker on top of something to get it off the floor to add height to that corner.

What is the dimension to the right of fireplace? Looks like maybe 36-42 inches?

Oh, and the fireplace width?

I've only posted two or three times here and by no means an expert, but I think the walls and the carpet are too much the same color which is why you don't like the color. Maybe you should go different but compatible, however I have no specific colors in mind.

I would move the armoire to angle it in the corner by the half-wall. Move the desk to sit under the half wall. Put the glider where the other rocker is now. Use the floor lamp beside it.

Put the couch on the wall where the burgundy recliner is now. Use the round end table that was by the recliner as the end table for the couch, on the end closer to the door, with a lamp. Us the spindle desk down on the right of the fireplace with a lamp on it. Hang a couple of the smaller samplers from over the red recliner, stacked above the desk.

Move the art piece from over the fireplace to above the couch. Keep the coffee table. Replace the recliner with two upholstered chairs with some pattern or texture (if you are going with a plain fabric or leather couch), angled to a sort of 90 degree set up, on the left of the fireplace. Put up the sides of the drop-leaf end table from the couch, and use that between the chairs, with a lamp.

Move the two oval portraits to hang over the fireplace, to break up all the rectangles there. Get rid of the area rug, as it is too small.

Rose - Are you talking the corner to the left of the fireplace?
Gwbr - it is 48" to the right of the fireplace, the fireplace is 58", so that leaves about 8'8" to the left
Begonia - had thought of a different color - perhaps a blue-gray?
Les --- had thought of that before - but always thought that then I would be creating two focal points??? What kind of chairs are you seeing in that corner? Also, the sofa? I wonder if at least one of them would still give access to TV viewing - not that we watch much. You don't miss a trick!! - to see that the little end table is a drop leaf - it was my husband's mother' and while not a particularly great piece, it does have sentimental value to him.

Yes to the left of the fireplace, that way I think you can still see the Tv from your couch, I assume you Tv is in the armoire. You will need to balance out that other corner on the right of the fireplace with something tall.
Sometimes just minor change makes a big impact.

I like the idea of a pathway around the main seating area. I only placed the main furniture, but of course you would add side table between chairs, and depending on its size, the desk might fit the desk in the corner next to kitchen. Unless your sofa is no longer serviceable, I'd keep it, but look for two comfortable, upholstered chairs.

I agree with moving the armoire to the corner to the left of the fireplace and place it diagonally. It will balance out the longer wall and will give you two areas for seating to watch tv from. Then I would decide which type of seating you like, eg. would you prefer two couches or a couch and some recliners?

I think by moving it across the room you will create two focal points but I have a thing a thing about the furniture facing away from a fireplace, usually it ends up looking like the furniture is snubbing it!

am I imagining things or did you have a blue/grey carpet not long ago?

The main thing I see is that a darker paint color would make a huge difference. It seems to be a large room with a lot of light, so I think you could go with a lot more color. I think a darker taupe or brown-- maybe BM Texas Leather-- would really make the room cozy and warm. If you want to stay neutral, I would make sure it's a dark enough color to really contrast from your carpet.
All the furniture placement ideas sound really good. Two upholstered chairs and a leather couch will look beautiful.

I had the sofa "floating" before I rearranged things. It doesn't seem like yours as far forward into the room as I previously had it. One thing I didn't like about it was that upon entering the room, one was looking at the back of the sofa.
Trance, no I didn't have blue/gray carpeting in there.
I measured distance putting the armoire in the corner next to the fireplace and in the opposite corner as Les had suggested. Placing in the opposite corner does create a longer distance to the TV from the sofa (about 16') - whereas next to the fireplace and leaving the sofa where it is would be about 13'.
Les, with your idea, I am wondering if I would have enough space for a seating area next to the fireplace assuming I would want to put the table in between the chairs in line with the corner - or do I need to????
I don't know if putting the armoire in the opposite corner would cause a "snubbing" of the fireplace.
DH saw me with the tape measure - didn't think that was a good sign!! --- but we discussed that what we will need to do is start moving things around to see the different options.
JLC - as for paint, the room actually is very dark. The only light comes from the french doors. I am so stuck on paint color and hope not to make another mistake.
I took a shot of the room from the kitchen. Colors are pretty washed out - the kitchen is Saybrook Sage and looks almost white here. The antique window hanging in the divider is blocking the view a bit - but the best shot I could get.

If you don't like to see the back of the sofa, you could reverse placement of sofa and two chairs. Either way, when you shop, you could look for sofa or chairs that look as from all sides.

Forgot to mention that I love your hanging antique window! It would be nice to repeat that design in the room - maybe throw pillows, quilt, or artwork.

Since the room doesn't get a lot of natural light, I would go fairly dark on the paint color - a gray/blue or darker tan that accentuates the light wood would look very nice. Then probably pretty light on the upholstered furniture.

My first impression is that you need more larger art pieces with more color in them. Also, some of your arrangements are hung a bit too high. I would add a mantel shelf to your fireplace and put some chunky candle holders with dark colored candles in them. The area to the right of the fireplace has too many small low objects. Head over to TJMaxx, Ross, Michaels, etc and look for some larger decorative items that will add impact to your room.

It's better to find your upholstered pieces before painting, but just to give you an idea how a few paint colors would look:

Terri, thanks for the advice. Yes, I do need to get more substantial pieces. I already eliminated much of the "clutter" - want to do even more so by eliminating smaller pieces. I do love the antique ice cream table and chair. Maybe just need to find another place. What do you suggest I look for at TJ Maxx??? I know I need a mantle. When DH and I built the fireplace, any ready-made mantle was not the right size. He didn't want to tackle making one, so there is sits without one. I had a shelf up there, but recently took that down. Thanks a lot!!!!!

I really appreciate those visuals, GWBR. While I will not buy paint until after I buy furniture, I am liking the blues - although I am thinking maybe a more muted smokey blue.
My kitchen is Saybrook Sage and the dining room is Kentucky Haze, which is my all-time favorite color. The dining room is adjacent to the kitchen but not visible from the family room.
I tried to get good pictures - tough to take pictures of sample swatches that are true to color. They are not the best, but give an idea of my current colors.
Then, of course, I have thought of repainting the kitchen and dining room and family room in a beigy "nuetral". I just don't know which direction to go.
