(to skip dialog, see question at the end of this post :)

To date, I have decided to keep the moss green oversized chair, redo the legs to a darker stain and recover an ottoman I have to coordinate with it.

Replace the coveted purple couch (wondering if anyone would buy it and for how much like on CL)

Remove (give away, sell or throw away?) the patterned couch

Purchase a new couch and a new recliner, most likely the couch will be a neutral beige mabye even a chennile type fabric? and a leather recliner.

Redo my new CL coffee tables/end tables, possibly black or a dark walnut or something.

Purchase a new rug

QUESTION: I really love the fabric on the patterned couch, I seriously have doubts about anyone buying it (cushions sag in the middle, has a structural issue, cat scratches on the sides, needs a professional cleaning).

HOWEVER, I think I would like to use the fabric from the cushions on the ottoman. That area has always been covered by something, so it's showing minimal wear. I could have it cleaned pretty easily, but I dont want to pay to have the whole couch cleaned just to toss it and for that matter not to sell it either, wouldn't be worth the cost.

Is this just a silly notion? do I need to just say goodbye and move on? here's a picture of the fabric.

I think you could probably buy another fabric you like equally as well, but if you want to reuse the fabric on that one (it is pretty, and yay for recycling!), I think I would try cutting out the fabric and then just sending it to the dry-cleaners rather than having the whole couch steam cleaned. You could even try just washing a swatch to see if it's washable.

Well, sure you could use the fabric for an ottoman.

But, before you do, you might want to make sure it goes with whatever rug you decide to put in there. It seems like it is going to be the main piece with a pattern in there, so that would be my only hesitation.

One comment on manure from farm animals. Recent research suggests that kids that grow up around farm animals are much less likely to develop allergies than other kids. The theory is that the constant exposure to relatively harmless bacteria causes the immune system to focus on infective substances rather than on harmless materials such as molds and pollens, etc. I know of no studies that show that exposure to animals and manures (certainly plenty fresh on the farm) causes an increase in the infection rate of children (or adults). If you have worked on a farm, you know that you don't wear gloves all the time to protect yourself from the bacteria. It is to protect the hands from injuries. Agreed that exposure to e coli and other organisms that one has not developed a resistance to or a tolerance of can produce significant disease in an individual whose immune system has not be "hyped" up by continuous exposure to bacteria and other organisms. It is also highly likely that that individual has allergy problems. In the military (the same things happens when one travels), people coming for training from other countries tend to pick up significant GI problems from exposure to the local e coli and other bacteria. If you go to their country for long, you will probably experience the same thing. Again, in general, to contact an infective agent, usually a certain "load" is required to cause infection unless a person is severely immunocompromised. An example is typhoid where a healthy individual will need to consume in excess of 4000 typhoid bacteria at one time to contact the disease. Washing lettuce will reduce but not remove all bacteria. But it is not usually necessary (or possible) to remove all the bacteria (unless you cook it to 160 degrees for 20 minutes or boil it, etc). Our bodies have over many thousands of years developed amazing ability to tolerate our environment. It is reasonable to disagree on this. I'll have to admit I have eaten all kinds of things out in the garden (usually wiping off the obvious dirt first), and have not noticed and ill effect. But then my body has undoubtedly has developed a level of immunity to the organism in my garden. A level of respect for the danger of eating possibly contaminate food materials is certainly warranted. For me, fish pond water would not concern if it had been applied early in the production of the crops. Just an opinion.

You could add interior shutters to the window facing the street, even doing just the bottom half would block most of the view. Or you could replace the window with one the same width but not same length and place it five feet off the floor for privacy. The privacy is easily addressed. However, the driving issue will be cost and feasibility of adding a toilet waste stack. I just added a bath addition to the side of the house that had zero existing plumbing. I lost 6x6 " in the sunroom below for the waste stack to be added, is there room by your front door to add a chase for waste? I also lost almost an additional $10k to run the new plumbing inside and outside to my existing sewer line. Your plan will most likely in tale outside excavation work too. My drive and walk way needed to be replaced at another $10k because my sewer line to the road was under my existing walk and driveway. My driveway was at the end of its life anyway so this cost was something I needed to spend regardless of the addition but it would have changed my plans if it was a decent drive to begin with. I am not saying you will have these identical costs. Yours could be much less to address adding plumbing where none existed before but it could also be even more...get a few quotes on both options and make sure it is permissible before deciding.

@JudyG, THAT is just plain BS. Just because you put quotes around your own fairy tale does not make it true, nor does editing your answer to something else just as wrong. I will repeat - until you come up with an actual published code, quite trying to claim it exists - much less add the word "most" to your supposition that there must be that one pot of gold at the end of some rainbow someplace to support your crackpot theory. "First in many jurisdictions, it's not legal to have a stove in front of a window." Still a bunch of nonsense no matter how many times it gets repeated on here. You will notice that not one of these people can ever come up with an actual code that states this, no matter how many times I offer them the opportunity to prove it in the last 5 years. The only time it is not legal is when the installation instructions are not followed in the first place, regardless of window placement. It doesn't even make the list for hazardous locations in section R308.4. https://codes.iccsafe.org/public/document/IRC2015/chapter-3-building-planning The Listing and Labeling of ALL cooking appliances contain clearances to COMBUSTIBLE materials ONLY, regardless of any intervening "protection" applied to that combustible material. There is no such thing as a different clearance to a tiled wall or any other non-combustible covering. There is no differentiation in the code, or the testing standards the codes refer to as to whether there is a window in the wall above countertop level, or how far from a window a cooking appliance would have to be if it were a requirement. If there is no minimum distance stated in the code, then how can it be a requirement?? Is it 1 inch or 10 feet? A window on each side of a range will produce the same cross wind as one over a range. Anybody who has 2 broken arms so that they can not shut off the burner for 2 seconds to close a window, probably should not be using the stove either. If the range allows the wall or window behind the range to get over 194°F, then it is the range that is in violation of the codes - not the window. Of course, we all know that CP's little community over the rainbow has gathered every old wives tale code that ever managed to make its way onto the internet, and amended their legal code to make sure they didn't leave any out...They can't even put expansion joints in their concrete slabs because if you end up stepping on a crack, you would break your mother's back!! You'd need a big, deep container and it would need GREAT drainage, I think. I don't know how well grow-bags would last if you put them in the ground (not very long, I'd guess). How big are the planters? Are they raised beds or boxes, something like that? I like this idea, hopefully some of the posters that grow roses in containers can chime in.

I think you should try the ideas of either washing or drycleaning the fabric after you remove it from the sofa.

I love your sofa and, if it's fixable, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Of course, getting it from Georgia to North Dakota would be a fortune I can't afford.

It's exactly the colors I'm searching for for my new furniture. Trust me, pretty colors and floral prints are not high on La-Z-Boy's list right now. I want a purple and green print; no one else seems to.

I'm not a neutral girl at heart; I don't care for orange (after working for seven years in a jail facility all I "see" as orange is prison jump suits!) and grey makes me sad. I'm outta luck for new furniture that will make me happy.

I think you should list the couch on CL or give it to Goodwill and find another fabric you love as much (recycling so that the couch can be used by someone else and doesn't end up in the landfill). And your room will feel new and refreshed with a pop of new fabric!

I'd buy the purple one... can you mail it to AZ? lol!

I also like the colors/pattern on the print sofa -and the chair. oh heck, just mail 'em all to me...

I'm in the camp of recycling the floral couch to GW and on to a fresh, crisp, new pattern for your new planned room.

If I had a truck, I'd come get the purple couch, definitely!
If you cut the fabric from the sofa, you may or may not be able to use it, but no one would want the sofa, even for free. I agree with the others - give away the sofa so it doesn't go in the landfill and buy some new, pretty fabric after you have purchased a rug and any other pieces.

BTW, chenille does not wear well - kinda like wearing down the knees in corderoy pants - you will see worn spots after a while. I know from experience.

Well some good news, I almost forgot that when I bought that couch, I bought an extra yard of the fabric!! LORD only knows why even then that I felt the need to get this extra fabric, maybe to make pillows? But there you have it, unused, matching fabric :)

I know a yard may not be quite enough but I think I could find a complimentary solid color to go with it. This way IF I decide to do this, the couch can find a new home in tact, and I can use the never used fabric on the ottoman. OR I might search for some other fabric after I get the other pieces in the room. Thanks for all your responses and suggestions! as always it's appreciated.
