Everything but the dust bath
Comments (11)Maggie has the perfect solution for you, the dish pan should work great. Get a bag of play sand at the hardware store to fill it. If you put the pan + sand out in the sun to get warm, then offer it to the chickens, it will be instant LOVE. You'll have a pile of dustbathing, zoned-out, practically drooling chickens, they get so relaxed. It's great fun to watch them. If the mess bothers you, just don't put out the pan & sand every day--a couple of times a week should suffice. But your birds will be healthier, happier and have feathers in better condition if they dustbathe. It is a need, not a luxury. Heck, they may already be doing it in the dirt, that's what mine do. I have several spots in the yard with these little chicken-sized indentations. Also, I guarantee you that you will repeatedly bolt out into the yard, heart in your mouth, after spotting one of your birds sprawled 'dead' in the yard. They will be either sunbathing or dustbathing. It's the sunbathing that fools me most often, as they just seem to drop where they stand and flop out on one side, head lolling and wing out. They don't move, except for a little breeze ruffling their feathers, until I run right up ON them--then they scare me AGAIN by suddenly jumping up and running off! I can't count how many times I've thought a hawk got one of them or something. Little stinkers! Velvet ~:>...See MoreChristmas ornament finds...... plus what I already have
Comments (9)sheesharee, you have a wonderful start to your tree. I hope you can find more blue ornies this yr, I know last year there were some stunning ones at Walmart, but don't worry they will be back, it takes time to get a bunch together, that is what makes it fun. If you have a Garden Ridge store near you check there, they have a giant selection of ornies. You are right about your tree, it is full and it takes a bunch of ornies to do a tree. One reason I love silk flowers in a tree is because it helps fill in the empty spaces. Michaels had a wonderful sale last weekend on silks, definately check there if you want to add in more. Tulle netting is also a beautiful "stuffer" in a tree. I got this photo from a christmas group I found a long time ago. See how adding in flowers makes a great filler?...See MoreDoes soapstone show dust / is it hard to keep clean?
Comments (7)I live on a dirt road with no central AC, so the windows are open a lot, and I get dust EVERYWHERE! I've never had a problem with it showing on the soapstone, though I do make sure to wipe the counter before I use it just to make sure it's clean (just because I can't see it does not mean it's not got some on it). My finished oak countertop on the baking center shows the dust way more than the soapstone. My original plans were for butcher block over stone because I can't get a fabricator at an affordable price in SD (I went DIY). But I'm so much happier with soapstone than I would have been with the butcher block, mostly because I love being able to set hot pans down without a worry, and I love working directly on it with dough and other stuff. Things defrost much faster, and I can cool down hot bakeware fast (like a cookie sheet between batches). The drawback is if you want something to stay hot or cold, don't put it directly on the stone. Most of that any stone will do that, but butcher block won't. I have a marble slab I can put in my freezer if I need to work chilled dough....See MoreI have a gift idea for the person who has everything.
Comments (19)Oh your poor daughter - she must feel awful about the shopping cart damage. It's terrible when you can't even park your car safely in the parking lot. My previous car was hit while parked at the supermarket too and of course the driver took off. I hope the car only needs some paint and not a dent removed....See Morehoovb zone 9 sunset 23
