Pls help me arrange this area?????....

I'm trying to make this area look a little better and I'm not sure how to arrange these pieces of furniture.

Here is how it is now...

The TV needs to stay on the wall it is on. I'm trying to arrange the shelving units better to "cozy" up the corner. I like the chairs and table where there are and they're actually good for TV viewing. I do have another piece that I can put there if it would help. You can see it in the next picture...

I just painted the walls BM Shaker Beige (from BM Kennebunkport Green) and I really like the color. I also hemmed up the curtains, but I'm thinking I need to change those, but have to change them on the other side of the room as well. I'd like a color (sage or rusty red?), maybe a linen or heavier fabric? I'm also looking for a cowhide rug to put under the 2 chairs and game table. The wood on the top part of the wall is a train track that will stay and I'm hoping I can get all the houses and greenery put up there real soon.

Any suggestions on how to arrange these wall units and TV? I want a new piece of furniture (EC), but it will have to wait until the first of the year, so I'm hoping I can do something with what I have now.

I'm not sure I would put the two units next to each other. They are too dissimilar, and create a "too big" presence when they're together.

Could you turn them both (or at least the one by the TV) so that they are diagonal in the corner of the room?

It's hard to know what's happening in the other part of the room.

Is it possible to align the two chairs so that they are centered in front of the windows?

And would it be possible to add an area rug?

My first thought would be to remove the shelving unit from the wall next to the TV Just let the TV take over that wall; and perhaps get a cabinet that would hide more of the electronics. I would also wall mount the TV so that it kind of "floats" above the cabinet. We did that with ours and the difference was amazing. If a new cabinet isn't possible, use the old one and move the shelving unit elsewhere. I also see an area rug; a round one if possible to offset the square shape of the tv. Or, perhaps a rectangular rug and a round coffee table. I love your chairs and drapes.

HI xedos, thanks for your reply here too - as I've apologized elsewhere, I've completely stopped getting notifications from GW so I didn't think I had any replies (sadly.) So, I've ruled out the big GE Monogram unit. Just not worth the money for the life we lead - entertaining is one thing but that's about quick consumption of decent-priced beverages, not storing in a showcase. :-) I did go back to the combo unit but my husband was not thrilled with the temperature that would remain for her beer. He is a bottled beer guy, boutique brands, and they should really be at 35 or 36. I think we'll go with the bev center in the island to solve this - and then he has his own place to go and can feel territorial. So, that sticks me back with a wine cooler (single or dual zone) and an ice maker. Or that u-line pair, I suppose. I'm leaning towards the Dual Zone Marvel - a little afraid it's loud? But, then I've got all the wine in there and don't have to think about it. I'd love to have the can/beverage storage in that wet bar area too but as you said, somethings gotta give. Maybe it will move people out of the wet bar and into the next room (the kitchen, of course!) Thinking of the Manitowoc ice machine - also terrified that it is crazy loud but all ice machines make noise...? Oh, last thing, while it is "new" construction because we gutted the old kitchen in our 1917 colonial, that ONE window in the wet bar is here to stay. It's not ideal, although I do like the idea of having natural light in that space. I was thinking of actually getting more of a decorative type of window to dress it up a little. Thanks for the tip on the Kohler trough sink. I wasn't exactly sure how people use those? Need to investigate there. "Lighting guy" and I discussed all the lighting - practical and then the "drama" - :-) THANKS for replying - I really appreciate it. I have so many decisions to make and it's difficult to make them on my own. There are either too many resources or not enough. And, my husband has a "I care deeply but have no preference," attitude which seems great but leaves me solo to make all the decisions. :)

Nice progress, but I agree it would be better lowered at some point, and possibly loosened up. With of course that metal box someplace where your husband doesn't sit. :) Both rooms that are experienced mainly when sitting and low ceilings can be dealt with by mounting wall decor relatively low, and in the case of the latter letting attention focus below so that a ceiling can sort of "soar" without notice above.

Here is how a 90degree turn would look like... We are too close to the kitchen and are left with too much space between our table and the living room. We are now looking for a new dining table which doesn‘t look so heavy (maybe mid century). We‘ll try to center it more under the light and change the fixture to have a pendant light over the table. This is my suggestion. you can get dining tables that go from 6 to 8 or 10 people. The key is to find a narrow table so that you have 36" around the table (enough to pull out chairs and walk around them. I have one and as you pull it out, the legs have legs behind them to support the weight. its expensive (about 900 without chairs) so if you want something cheaper, look at one with a leaf so you can at least get to 8 people when needed though 10 is perferable (as kid grow they bring back more friends). Also, I split the area into two without a wall or barrier but to do this and keep the open feel, use a couch with a low back to it. This way its not blocking any view. The sectional you can have both sides with a back or the side closest to the chair be a chaise depending on how you live. If you do the backs on the couches, the chairs would be used as a place for your teens to be when you tell them they cant sulk in their room all day and need to interact but they dont want to (just me?) or for two people to play a game or chat while others watch TV. If you do the chaise instead, the whole ares becomes one big area for conversations but you can loose a bit of the support so kids may lay on it more than sit. If your family have a lot of shoes, you can also put a long short but long cabinet to host all the shoes. Hope this all helps. P.S. the three circles are 37" chairs and a small table. i should have labeled those.

I had thought about mounting the TV on the wall. I didn't want to invest in the mounting bracket (and the holes in the wall) if I wasn't going to keep it that way. I'll try removing the shelving unit and seeing how that looks. It seems like it will be awfully bare. Maybe a picture behind the chair with the torche will keep it from looking to empty?

mclarke... Here is the other side of the room. I like how the furniture is arranged, but am replacing the furniture and the rug. I haven't found the "right" couch or fabric. I'm hoping when I paint the paneling I'll have a better idea of what will work.

I'd love to hear more about the train track. How did you put it up there? What type of train is it? And can you show more pictures of it? We have boxes of trains that we get out once a year and this would be a neat idea for our (future) gameroom or something like that.

I love your curtains with the chairs and the wall color and the wood floors.

The wood is 1X6 that I stained on the bottom (where it shows) and attached to the wall with small L brackets on the upper side (so you don't see them). Since the wall is open on one end, I put some columns under the corners. That end was supposed to look like a covered bridge, but it didn't turn out like I was hoping. My dh had a lot of fun purchasing and assembling the track. I can't remember what scale, O or HO (I'll ask later and let you know). The track even curves at points, so there is room to put houses and trees and such. We also had some wires run that go to a little cupboard in the wall in the hallway where the controls are for the trains and so we can also have lighted houses, etc. Most of the houses still have to be assembled, so I don't have many to put up there right now (on that never ending to do list!!).

It is a real conversation piece and everyone loves it. The only draw back is, the train is a little loud when it's running on the track, so we don't leave it on for long periods.

I can get some more pictures tomorrow if you need to see them.
