Please help with MBR (long & pic heavy)
Comments (6)Thanks for such quick replies! It is different to see pictures of the room - it looks more crowed in them than IRL but I do agree that the settee has to go. It was purchased for the perfect spot in the last home (for 15 yrs) and as we are finding out, a lot of our furniture has not fit in this place and much has been sold. The secretary, although a problem, is the one piece we are not willing to let go of because this may just be a temporary landing until my husband finishes his schooling. The room is 13 ft wide. The entry door wall with the 10 ft ceiling is 17 1/2 ft and the window wall is 15 ft long. The picture from the head of the bed shows the doorway to the bath on the left and the door to the walk-in closet to the right. So not only is the ceiling height lope-sided, so is the wall opposite the current bed placement! We have tried the bed on the longer wall, with the sec. on the wall to the left of the window, and had a narrower dresser where the sec currently is. I know this sounds crazy, but I was unable to sleep well with the bed in that position because I could not see who or what was coming through the door. Let's just call it a feng shui or a "survivor" thing! Les, I have added some pictures of checked bedrooms that I like. Maybe I am using the wrong words to describe the feel I am after. I agree checks, brass bed and coverlet do say country but I was hoping for something a bit sophisticated but not too formal. I see now that the beds in the pictures I added are not brass. I have a hard time putting my ideas into words and I have not found too many pictures. There is just a "feel" I have gotten when traveling in Europe that I love but it is not one particular country or look. The idea of fabric behind the bed is interesting. It would give the headboard more visual impact. The PO had an elaborate set up in a floral over the bed which DH was thankful went with them! Red, when you say a longer dresser - how long? The ones I have are 60 inches wide. I wonder if a 72 inch would fit up the stairs! I will keep a lookout on Craig's List. By taking out the settee, there is now room for a small chair at the sec. which did not fit before! So I can see this will be a trial of form over function in this room. Although the bed might look great on the long wall - I won't get any sleep! I do like the fact that when I walk into the room now, I see the full bed first and WTs will add to that view. As I am sitting in the room now, the secretary is MY focal point from the bed! Thanks for your help. Chris...See MoreNever thought I'd be back for paint help. Please? Pic heavy
Comments (40)Hi magpie, you could always fool around with some crafty stuff too. This is a $1 garage sale buy; it had an ugly picture print and a nasty brown frame. About eighteen years ago on a whim I poured a few shades of double pigment paint on Cling Wrap and zapped in an old microwave in the garage. After priming the picture I poured some metallic paints on and blended. I then glued on the Cling Wrap and stitched everything in with stitch craft paint. I wasn't actually expecting much out of the junk but I ended up liking it. The picture now lives in the game room; it took no time, money and little experience to make. Although this would not be exactly right for your space I hope I have inspired you to try and mock a few canvases like those cool panels in your inspiration picture. http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af170/jterrilynn/?action=view&current=picture017.jpg" target="_blank"> http://s1004.photobucket.com/albums/af170/jterrilynn/?action=view&current=picture015.jpg" target="_blank">...See MoreAnybody else besides me has a wall grouping behind sofa nowdays?
Comments (14)Shine_2009, last winter I moved one floor down & around the corner to get an apartment with better light: the Canned Spinach walls in my old apartment were a way to make the natural darkness of the place--with only one window, it was like as a cave anyway, after 9AM--work for me, not against me. I don't pay any attention to the old advice to paint light rooms darker & dark rooms light, and there, dark walls were a good solution for a space that was gloomy even on sunny days. In my new place, I not only have light till 3PM--even in the dark days of winter--I also have a cross breeze, so much, in fact, that if I drop a piece of paper on the floor, before I know it it's been blown down the hall. Great on fall days like today, with the curtains blowing in the chilly breeze & the wooden blinds chattering like chipmunks. Of course, all that light means more windows, and dead center on two walls at that, and after you factor in a door to the dining room on the third wall and an open archway & a wooden mantel on the fourth, well, there's not much wall space left for art. That's why, in the only room that tends toward the dark, I'll be painting the walls Wet Coffee Grounds brown and the artwork will go all the way to the ceiling on every inch of open wall space. Sort of like the wall opposite my sofa in my old place--except this time around, it will be even more crowded. Right now, though, most of my framed art is still on the floor, leaned up against the walls, and most of my seating has to float out in the middle of the room. In decorating as in life, there's always a trade-off....See MoreHelp Me Arrange My Living Room
Comments (62)I think you need to move the loveseat just a bit closer to the couch, and be sure you are at a right angle with the two pieces, but imo that is much better. Your visual line along the kitchen wall is not so choppy with the couch there as it was with the loveseat. Having the loveseat on the longer wall allows you room for a chair in the back corner(obviously something more cushy in the future), and plenty of easy access to the door as you said you needed. Having the loveseat on the longer wall also takes away the feeling of the back wall area being barricaded from the seating area by the long couch. It is no longer just a backdrop, but a usable part of the space with depth and interest. Be sure your coffeetable is moved in closely enough so that it is usable for both the couch and loveseat. Thanks for moving things around and indulging me. I like it better this way, tho I would still like to see the tv moved, but I know how men can be about those things. Whatever you decide, you have a nice space and great furniture pieces. Now you just need to bring in some of the great elements that squirrel and chicory have shown you....See Morechickadee2_gw
