Anna, my cabinets were custom made to fit the space. They are about 19" across. The inside is around 17+" across. This is what I had available. I left about an inch on either side of the washer dryer. The cabinet got built wrong in several ways: 1) The veneer was to be horizontal. I left it because they did such a nice job with the matching and all. I didn't want to press my luck. The cabinet lady that was coordinating this didn't get the message to the builders :/ 2) The divide between the bottom portion and the mid portion was to be at the height of the stacking kit so the dryer vent would fit within the mid portion. The cabinet lady that was coordinating this didn't get the message to the builders :/ The carpenter fixed it so that it would work, but it would have been better the planned way. 3) There was supposed to be enough room on the right side so I could lay a tile wall, to end at the cabinet. The cabinet lady, again didn't get the information to the builders. The carpenter shifted it over so that I can add tile if I want to. When you know what kind of W/D set you are using, be sure to see how they recommend where to put them. My set was advised to be located along a bearing wall. My joist are only 8' long so less likely to bounce. My floor is pretty stiff too with extra plywood over the existing old floor.

I like the horizontal pulls too, centered vertically on drawers, 3" from the top/bottoms to line up with your top drawer pulls. Another option: we're going with Berenson finger pulls. They're not beefy, but GREAT minimalist pulls. Positano, I have the same setup as you - 36" uppers that came with 3 shelves, so including the bottom, that's four openings. I've been using them the way the carpenter put them in, which gives me good size spaces for the first two openings, a smaller space for the third, and even less for the fourth. (Wish I could have gotten the 42" uppers - that would have made the fourth opening more usable.) It's still pretty good, though - as you go up, it's harder to reach to store things, so it's good not to stack them too high. I've been putting less-used items like serving bowls, pie dishes, trays, etc. up there. Talley_Sue, a user here who was kind enough to invite me to her home early on in my planning process to see what she had done with her kitchen, liked to have her shelves spaced closely together. She felt that stacking unlike items together because the shelves were too high was inefficient. Her kitchen was a model of efficient use of space! She should have been a systems analyst, that one! ;-)

Frameless cabinets will give you larger door openings for both the upper and lower cabinets. The hinges can get in the way of shelf placement (you can't put a shelf right where the hinge is) but otherwise don't take up real space. So, for a 12" cabinet with 3/4"sides, the opening would be 10.5". The back of the cabinet can be 1/4-1/2 thick so the the interior depth of a wall cabinet would be 11.5-11.75" deep. Framed cabinets usually have a 1.5" face frame so the door opening would only be 9", however, the interior width of the cabinet is the same as frameless. With an inset door, the opening would be the same but the depth of the cabinet would be 3/4" shallower as the door sits in the frame taking up 3/4" of the exterior space. Many companies make wall cabinets 13" for inset to ensure that dinner plates will fit. The difference between framed and frameless construction can really be seen in drawer sizes, the drawer width being significanly wider in frameless. A twelve inch drawer base with have 9.5 drawer widths for frameless and 8" widths for framed. There's no difference in drawer width for overlay vs inset. I'm assuming 1/2" drawer sides. A corner wall cabinet requires 24" of linear space on each adjacent wall. A corner base cabinet requires a minimum or 33" however, 36" is much, much better as the door opening is much larger. I have a small kitchen and currently have frameless cabinets which I love and was determined to get again. However, I ended up surprising myself and choosing form ove function by ordering inset cabinets for my remodel. For a period style kitchen, nothing beats the look of inset. I don't however have any 12" cabinets. I would avoid them if possible. Hope this helps.
