Fellow Dish Addicts: Where Do You Store Yours???
Comments (26)DH enjoys the final product when I've done a tablesetting. He does think I am a bit nuts while I am mapping out a table, but oh well, everyone has some hobby, no? That said, he doesn't approve of the cabinets in my office being filled with heavy dishes. He keeps warning me that the cabinets are going to just fall off of the wall sooner or later. I store all of my red dishes for Valentines, 4th of July and Christmas overflow in the cabinets over my desk in the office. Also in the office cabinets are my stacking plates, 20 Thanksgiving plates (Kohl's sale last Fall), 20 W/S white pasta bowls, 20 square white salad plates. Oh, 2 trifle bowls as well. Then there is the pantry closet - I store my "Autumn" china - service for 12, missing some pieces, which my DM gave me. The china was her wedding china so I love to use it as soon as the Summer ends. Lenox Holiday China - full service for 20 plus extra dinner plates stored in closet in D/R. Serving pieces are being stored at DM as she has a full basement crying out for dish storage. Lenox "Amythest", my wedding china is stored in the china closet in the D/R. Full service for 16. Everyday white W/S bistroware is in the kitchen cabinets - service for 16. Do you see where I'm going with this? I am not accounting for all of the stemware, serving dishes and the like which I have accumulated over the years:). Most are in the pantry closet, but many are stashed here and there!. I don't purchase everything in sets. My Thanksgiving plates from Kohls have a leaf pattern on the edge, so I picked colors from the leaves and purchased accompanying solid color plates to complete the place settings. Also, I've found with using white dishes, I can play with the table a bit more putting in different whites or colors if I like. No basement in our home, so I have made creative use of just about every other space, conventional or not. I just gave DB and DSIL my Mikasa (forget the pattern name) dishes as they have the same pattern, and I replaced the Mikasa with the bistroware which is much more versitile for me. Then there are the linens, oh my. I have so many tablecloths and napkins it is sick. But remember all of these were collected over 20 some odd years. I love to do nice tablesettings and to do them, a gal must have the things that are needed! We host all of the holidays at our home, so I guess I can somewhat justify having all of the necessary items to entertain 10-20 people at a time. I actually thought I had a dish problem until I found this forum. Can't wait to read more responses. Great topic!...See MoreDoes your Miele dishwasher really dry your dishes?
Comments (18)I've had 2 Miele DW over the last ten years, one when I lived in Southern California and one that I bought when we moved to Virginia, and have never had trouble with wet dishes. Like other posters, I sometimes have a few water drops, but not enough to have to leave anything on a counter to dry. I did wonder when I moved east if the Miele wouldn't dry as well in a more humid climate, but it hasn't been a problem. I love Miele dishwashers....See MoreWhere do you put paper towels, wet dish towels, cutting boards,
Comments (35)Paper Towels: On a vertical stand next to my sink. I like having them handy. It is an inexpensive one from Target. In the past, I had them hanging under the upper cabinets. After we remodeled, I needed a new solution. I didn't think the countertop one would be stable, but it is and I really like it. I enjoying being able to grab the whole roll and take it to another room if I need to. Wet dish towels: I have a Rev-a-shelf hanging rod thing on the inside of one of my cabinet doors under the sink. I only use it occasionally though. Usually I have a dishtowel folded in half laying/hanging right on the counter where I stand at the sink. I use it for drying my hands, fruit, dishes, etc. throughout the day. It dries quickly. I have a dish drainer on one side of my double sink, so anything I hand wash usually just dries in there. If I've entertained and have extra hand washing with more dishes on a towel on the counter, then those go on the racks under the sink until they dry. Sometimes if I have one that is really wet and yucky, I just throw it on the tile floor in my laundry room (closet). It is the only tile I have in the whole house (I like to take advantage of it.) :) Cutting boards: In a vertically divided cabinet in one of my lowers. Plastic bags: I donate them to a food bank, so I throw them in the trunk of my car until I see my friend who takes them for me. :)...See MoreWhere do you put your dishes that don't go into the DW?
Comments (24)sjhockeyfan - I rinse them out and drip dry them before they go in the bin. Keeps everything cleaner and a bit less smelly. You could practically eat out of my recycling bin! Not so much off my floors, unless you come over one minute after my cleaner leaves. I think I mentioned before, trash is serious business up here in NS. Compost, trash, paper, recycling, cardboard are the five separate things our city mandates. Then I have another compost going for my compost pile and I separate out my refundable bottles and cans so the pickers can take them without rooting through my recyclables (a few mornings picking up recyling all over the street from a ripped open bag teaches you that trick). Without a garage it's hard to keep it all tidy. This post was edited by robotropolis on Thu, May 1, 14 at 15:51...See Moretinker1121
