Diagonal hardwood in kitchen?

We have a hardwood floor in our kitchen (and we love it) running front to back. The wood extends from the front door down the hall to the kitchen, which has a door at a 45 degree angle to the hall. The kitchen is now being bumped out to twice the size it used to be. Since it has been very difficult to locate the same beveled-edge wood to finish the floor of the addition, our floor pro wants to tear up the kitchen floor and install all new unfinished square-edged flooring, sand down the existing hall and entry to bare wood to elimiate some of the bevel, and refinish it all to match.

However, we now realize that the joists run two different ways in the two halves of the kitchen, (the old part has left-to-right joists and the addition front-to-back) so he recommends a diagonal floor in the kitchen starting at the door to the hallway. I've never seen a kitchen with a floor like this. Is it commonly done and does anyone like the look?
