Cararra slab countertops with Allegro White Subway Tile

We are updating our kitchen and are installing Carrara marble countertops-honed. I was all set to do a simple white ceramic subway tile as a backsplash, but then the lady at the tile shop showed me the Field 3x6 Allegro White Subway Tile. The name says "white" but when she showed me a box, I saw that they came in a whole variety of colors ranging from gray-green, to gray-white, white, white with gold veining, gray veining, etc... Put together, they make quite an exquisite pattern. My question for you expert decorators out there--would this beautiful backsplash compete with my countertops? Originally, I wanted the honed Carrara marble counters for their beauty and felt that a white ceramic subway tile was warm and classic. I am now undecided between the two. I LOVE the Field 3x6 Allegro Subway tile--but is that TOO much marble? Will it compete with my cararra countertops? Please help!

How can anyone have too much marble - lol?! What wood/color are your cabinets and flooring? I think the marble subway tile sounds lovely.

LOL! My sentiments exactly! However, the subway tiles are indeed different than the honed cararra. They give almost a patchwork appearance. I like it, but I'm not sure it "goes". I have seen people do the cararra for backsplash--but I feel like this might be too cold/modern. I want the warmth of tile, but the uniqueness of stone. Dont know if that makes any sense... My cabinets will be painted a white (they are currently orange oak) and my floors are a deep honey oak. Our island is currently butcher block (a light mable) and that will stay the same.. Does this help?
By the way--if you have any tips on whites that look spectacular with marble and that will go with my floors please do tell.. I have not narrowed down a white yet...

Wow - thank you so much for your helpful responses! I just love this website :-) I've decided to go with the white hex and the Laticrete Silver Shadow grout - I looked online and saw several pictures and I really like it! (is it darker or lighter than the Mapei Warm Gray Bill V? I think they are very close according to this website - http://www.grout-aide.com/colors2.html) I actually really like the black/white example Bill V shared as it doesn't over-do the black flowers but after a bit more thought, I think that the all white hex will give us more options if we decide to change the paint later or the next homeowner has all boys :-) I'll have to save my idea of having black honed granite for our kitchen remodel next summer! * Side note, this will just be the girls' bathroom - we are currently adding a master upstairs as well and a powder downstairs for guests - you will certainly be seeing many more questions from me as we get closer to making final decisions in both of those spaces as well ;) Thanks for all the responses re: grout not matching between the two spaces. Bill V, I'm definitely giving consideration to both being the same as you suggest but going to leave that up to my husband to decide. I saw a picture on this forum that has the grout you suggested as their surround and it looks lovely with the chrome!!! alku05, yes, please share pictures! Does your granite have the garnet speckles? I read online that some of these slabs do and some don't - obviously with any of the paint options I'm looking at the red garnet speckles won't work ;) I also read that this slab resembles marble but without as much worry about staining - certainly something I'm going to look more into! - On that note, do you think the space will look balanced if I picked a granite like this one (with grey and/or white tones) if we go with all white and just the lighter grey grout? Thanks to all who responded - if there are any other suggestions or pictures you could share with me, I'm all ears and of course appreciate all the help!

nik, Welcome! A couple of thoughts: if you love absolute black but are worried about maintenance, look at a leathered finish. It is much more forgiving than the polished finish to smudges, etc. There might be a reason you aren't seeing a lot of pictures with your color cabs and white tile - you might be right and it might be too bright. Try to get some sample tiles and bring them home and tape them to the wall to get an idea. You might find the answer really fast! Check the Finished Kitchen blog and Backsplash slideshow (link to FKB below, backsplash slideshow at FKB) for more pics to see if anyone else has done it - there are lots of successful rule breakers here! Maybe consider an off-white subway. Again checking a sample in your kitchen with your cabs and counter will help. If you both love the glass mosaic you might be able to incorporate it in a small area - like behind the backsplash or as an accent with 2 or 3 rows of mosaic between rows of subway - there are some examples in the finished backsplashes. anap2400 - We went with a sonoma tile. I think it is stellar penthouse crackle in a 3x9. Here are the pictures. My inclination would have been more contrast with the countertop/tile, but the decorator convinced me that I wanted contrast with the upper cabinets and the tile and I think she was right. You really see the backsplash tile when looking from across the room -- you don't see it when you are looking at the countertop (like in the 2nd) picture.

OK, SO I didnt like the one with the gray grout and the white subway tile. The dark lines take the eyes away from the countertops.. Of the ones you sent me, I liked this one the best:

I like that one too, lila. It's very elegant and it gives the backsplash a feeling of texture which I personally like.

If you can imagine this kitchen with the exact same backsplash but with the carrara slab countertops--that is what the Allegro white looks like.

I dont know... In truth, I have not gotten around to researching that yet.... I was thinking white or off-white, but my kitchen is going to be sooo white that maybe a rich color might be better.... not sure...any ideas?

If left to my own devises I would paint everything gray so I am probably not a good person to ask! I have seen many white kitchens with white walls - it's a beautiful look but I don't know how I would feel about it after a few months!
