Shee & Co., Sorry it took me a while to get back to this.... Skewing: I shouldn't have mentioned this goofy little point, but now it's out there! It's only relevant in a few "Real-life" scenarios. It mainly pertains (to ME anyway...) paint applied too thinly, therefore revealing a hint of the primer color. * Example: If someone uses a "pink" primer under Burgundy, the whole paintjob can appear too light, 'cuz the primer is too white. * To ME...Gray is more appropriate, 'cuz it alters deep colors the "least", if paint is applied too thin. * Gray primer has its limits though! If you're painting a vivid "Lemon Yellow" or "Basketball Orange", THEN you'd need a primer that's almost the final paint color! A medium-gray primer COULD give a grayish-cast to bright, vivid tones. Curing/Bathroom use: * Sorry Shee.....you'll have to smell for a month.........;-) * JUST KIDDING! * After 2nd paint coat has dried for a day, use bathroom as normal. It needs that 24hrs. to get the initial surface-dry so steam doesn't re-soften the paint slightly. * "Full Cure-Out" mainly refers to the complete dry-thru/hardening of the applied film...SO IT'S WASHABLE. "Sweeping": * If you're working L-to-R, the RIGHT edge of a "swept" section will be the wettest. * Therefore, you're OK to slightly work into this section. When sweeping your 2nd column, start from its left edge, overlapping into 1st column slightly. * Ease-off the pressure on your rollers left side just a hair when overlapping a previous sections' final sweep. Good day, many people perfer ben moore over sherwin however both r good qualiry paints however sherwin doesn't have an eggshell and their satin looks like a semi gloss I personally like durons paints which is now owned by sherwin. As for the tapeing I personally would say freehand is the best but if you want fresh crisp lines find some frog tape I haven't tried it but it has something on the edges that resists the latex paint but whatever tape you use as a rule of thumb dry brush the edge, this helps ensure there is no seapage under the tape, and pull the tape as you go usualy once I get to a corner I pull the tape off yes you will have to re tape but this way you don't pull the paint off. I would do this process 2 times before rolling only because when you dry brush it doesn't cover well and then you do your 3rd cut in and roll the 2nd coat

Like most "procedures", there will be varying opinions...! >>> When you say "I can't see any grain through 1st coat of primer." Do you mean: a) The grain colors are visually hidden (but TEXTURE OF grain still shows) now, or... b) The pitted TEXTURE OF THE GRAIN is now filled/hidden? If you're happy with how the grain looks after the 1 prime-coat, you're good to paint! You must've had smoother Oak to start with, OR, the previous finish was thick enough to fill most of the grain-pits. Many Oaks cabs are fairly "course-grained". Use a good portable light source and look critically at the surface texture as-is. Turn off room lights, and just use your flashlight, etc. Use different angles of lighting. Lotsa devilish details will now be revealed!! I'd be REALLY surprised if Oak-grain is filled/hidden by 1 coat of primer.... Just realize that even TWO coats of paint won't fill in much more grain. That needs to be done (IF DESIRED) BEFORE any paint hits those cabs! Faron

Let me tell you a story. I used to work for a huge new construction painting crew. We had 35 painters or so. Many of us were specialists in spraying primer and backrolling. We used 1 1/4" nap sleeves. You can get into a lot of trouble with a roller cover that big if you don't give a crap. However, if you spread the paint out properly, you can get a wall to look as if it was rolled out with a 1/2" nap. My point is, this is a technique issue. This is why you have some areas that don't look too bad and some areas that look fine. It's not that they choose the wrong size nap. It's just because they didn't care (or were not trained properly). I'm not saying that the 3/4" nap is the best choice for rolling primer. It's not. 1/2" would be more appropriate. So, don't let this one incident ruin you image of painters. You should be able to find a painter that can paint.
