New drywall finish question. Skim coat=plaster coat=?
Comments (21)We did veneer plaster for a couple of reasons. In our regional area, no one does it. We had to go to a specialty supplier and order it in. We found someone who trained in Maine to install it and the only reason it was a bit more expensive than drywall is because our original framing was uneven and we ordered 5/8" thick sheets. I had a pretty strong aversion to drywall after the adventures with mold. Veener plaster is freakin' gorgeous, perfectly smooth and we would do it again in a heartbeat. The feel of it perfectly matches the rest of the house - which is all 1920's plaster. Here, people call the supposedly water resistant drywall "blueboard", so I was surprised by what it looked like (gray, gray and more gray) and that it was made up of two slightly different layers and that it is much harder and denser than drywall. It works pretty well as a sound deadener too! @casey Wow, that is really nice!...See MoreHelp! Problems painting over skim coated walls....
Comments (8)I'm afraid I can't call the contractor for advice at the moment....he had knee surgery this week. I let the skim coat cure about 10-14 days before priming. I guarantee there was very little humidity during the curing process; Utah is a desert climate and anything above 20% in the summer is considered "humid". I know the walls were free of debris before the skim coating was begun, and I know it's not a problem with the skim coating itself not adhering. When the paint came off with the tape the skim coated surface beneath was intact. I don't have the brand of the compound that was used but I know it was not pre-mixed......my children had a lot of fun watching the compound being mixed in the back yard with the giant "cake mixer" drill attachment. Yesterday I did repair the appearance of the jagged edges where the paint came off by sanding, priming, spackling, sanding, priming, and re-painting and everything looks great now........but I can't help be worried that my careful paint job is eventually going to bubble up and come off the walls....See MoreBest primer over skim coat?
Comments (10)Thanks for the comments everyone. paintguy & graywings - I think you two answered my question either go Gardz or oil based primer but not regular waterbased right on top of the skim coat. paintguy I know Gardz is a good primer but would still need to use a second coat of primer with pigment if I did Gardz because the original wall was blue. Even though the skim coat covers it pretty well its thin enough that there are spots where the blue shows through. I guess the question is, is the Gardz better than the oil based primer enough to make it worth doing two coats of primer? One to seal well and the other just to even out the color? It is the middle of winter making the thought of using the oil based primer even less appealing than usual, it's not a terribly large room though lots of cutting in will be involved. ci_lantro - So is mixing the Bin and Gardz to meant to make it opague? I'd have to ask my husband about how it was while painting on, it might have been hard to tell as he was applying but you could definitely tell when it dried where the Gardz was because the wall looked laquered. It's interesting stuff....See MoreBad smell coming from newly painted, skim coated wall.
Comments (1)Now, a week later, I noticed a faint bad smell in my dining room. Has the house been buttoned up since you painted? Or do you have the windows open & fans running? If the house has been closed up, most likely the odor is accumulating. Plus, higher humidity in the summer factors in and tend to make stink seem stinkier... You have a lot going on--oil primer under a skim coat with Kilz over the top of than and then paint. Kilz is low-odor, low VOC, not zero odor, zero VOC. Can take a good while for the odor of oil primer to dissipate, too. I don't know what brand of paint & possible VOC's that the topcoat added. Ventilate, burn a candle in the room (helps to burn off any VOC's in the air) & give it time. The other alternative would be to coat the entire room w/ pigmented shellac & repaint. Not worth the effort & expense, IMO. Not for a 'faint' bad smell....See Moredncgergen
