First Kitchen Remodel - Please help with layout.

We are in the planning phase of a remodel that includes relocating the kitchen. We have been working with a KD and have a layout that we would like to get feedback on. We welcome any and all ideas - even a completely new layout. All of the plumbing and electrical will be new so we are not tied to any appliance locations. Our curent kitchen has 2 27" upper cabinets a sink cabinet, and 6 27" lower cabinets. We are very excited to have the extra space and want to make sure we make good use of it.

Here is some general information.

We like the penensula because it separates the kitchen from the living/dining area but still feels open.

The sink and island are centered between two planned skylights. This centerline can shift either way in 12" incrememts.

The sink wall is the only exterior wall with a view. The door next to the ovens leads to the laundry room.

The kitchen leads to an open dining/living area.

Appliances:

36" range

42" built-in side by side

30" wall oven

speed oven and/or steam oven

The current layout has two ovens in a stack. If we end up deciding on a speed and steam, what is a good location for the 3rd (4th including the range) oven? Is this total overkill? Maybe this is a question for the appliance forum...

In our latest revision, we changed the upper cabinets on either side of the hood and are thinking about installing two windows (with frosted glass) above those cabinets.

The current layout has glass doors on either side of the sink and hood.

The kitchen will be used by multiple people at the same time. My wife and 2 kids all like to cook and are frequently using the kitchen at the same time.

Right now the only thing I would like to know (I could probably figure it out but it's late) are the aisle widths between the perimeter counters and the island and the distance between the end of the peninsula and the bookcase.

And re your ovens - why do you need so many and what will you have to give up to get the 3rd and then the 4th. Are you/can you give that up. What will you use the island for?

Thanks for pointing out the missing aisle dimensions. I'll add them to the floor plan view.
These are cabinet to cabinet - we are planning on 3/4" - 1" overhang
Range wall to island - 52"
Peninsula to island - 40"
Both sides of island - 42"

When I was taking those measurements I realized that I forgot to mention the current drawing shows the range wall lowers pulled out 3". The range will probably be the CC which is 25" to the back of the door and 27 3/8 to the front. Are there any heat issues if the cabinets come out past the door gasket? If we end up going this route I would rather see deeper cabinets and drawers rather than just pulling them out. It might be better to leave them at 24" deep and against the wall and gain 3" of cabinets on the sink and refrigerator walls.

The island will probably be used for serving and sometimes prep when multiple people are using the kitchen. We have never had an island so we aren't sure how it will get used.

We currently have a single slide-in 30" range with a OTR microwave and countertop toaster oven. When we entertain oven space is always an issue. Maybe we are overcorrecting with too many ovens. Another option we have considered is the range,steam and speed oven and maybe a warming drawer. With this option we would only need a 24" cabinet and gain 6" of space.

I have read a lot of posts about blind corners and still don't know what is best for us. The layout shows 2 lazy susans and a LeMans style pullout at the peninsula. The peninsula might be a good spot to close in the corner and have access from the other side. We could use this to store infrequently used items.

Thank you, bmorepanic, I appreciate your response. I will try to answer your questions first. The family room is pretty formal and traditional with dark wood antiques and I am hoping to make my kitchen more transitional and lighter in feel, with slab cabinetry, so I think it important to keep the wall up between the two spaces. I also use that wall to hang art on the family room side, and cannot figure out where those paintings will hang if the wall is not there. The sunroom is currently where we eat almost all our meals, on a Moroccan tiled table that is 39" x 78.5" and I hope to incorporate that table into the new kitchen/sunroom area as it's a very functional piece. I am ok with the sunroom becoming more of the hang out place, but am not sure where the table will go if that happens, as it seems too large for the breakfast area. We currently have three stools at the island but the overhang is only 7 inches so knee bumping is a regular occurrence, and the gas cooktop is there, so there is not much room for plates, etc. I only use the dining room when I am entertaining, and when I have the extended family over we split up and sit down to our meals in three different rooms (the dining room table, the sunroom table, and the living room sofa and coffee table.) It isn't ideal, but it works. Problems with current kitchen are too little usable counter space (microwave, toaster oven, juicer, coffee maker, drying rack, etc. occupy too much space), and lack of storage. I also have all of my 12 year old builder-grade appliances breaking this year. We seem to be in each other's way as a result of the layout, getting stuff out of the fridge, using the sink, getting to the pantry. My garage has a ton of stuff I never use that belonged to my husband, old gallons of paint, old chandeliers, etc. I think I can clear out the back part, and still have enough room in the front half for the stuff I do need, ie. trash cans, recycling bins, bikes, scooters, etc. We are able to split up responsibilities with one person needing prep and oven and the other person using cooktop. By my count there will be one regular electric oven (30" Wolf) and one microwave/speed oven (Miele or Adv) and one warming drawer (also 30" Wolf). Finally, the load-bearing wall that separates the kitchen from the solarium holds the HVAC return and I don't think I want to deal with the expense of re-routing that, so it will probably remain as is (behind and to the right of the current ovens). I was thinking the bottom half of some of the load bearing wall could remain, at least for additional counter space and now that you mention it, to stop people from coming into the kitchen prep/cook area from the family room, what do you think of that idea? I like your sketch but don't know what P1 and P2 refers to, please forgive my ignorance. Thanks for clearing up the dimensions and aisle widths, good to know that 48" is the minimum for two cooks. Currently, I have a couch and table in the breakfast area, and my boys sit there all the time and use the table for coloring, legos, etc. I am having a tough time imagining that area gone, especially if it means I have to replace the windows in that area with ones that start 42" from the floor (which one designer tells me is necessary if I am to put the clean up area there) and deal with the exterior siding of the house being matched to the 12 year old pre-existing shingles. If I can keep my existing windows, then I would be more amenable to the idea. I look forward to your response. And thank you again for taking the time to come up with a plan.

Thanks for the advice, Kristine! I moved some things around in the Ikea planner like you suggested. Your suggestion for the fridge location is where my fridge is currently located. I moved it in my original plan because I dislike how much it sticks out into the middle of the room. I could probably solve that issue by getting a counter-depth fridge. I need to do more research on that because I am concerned that we won't have enough fridge space with a counter depth model. I frequently put cookie sheets in the fridge and they take up the entire depth of my current fridge (a side-by-side model). I think I could fit them in a counter depth fridge if I got the kind with 2 french doors on the top and the freezer on the bottom. I moved the wall oven/micro over to the far left wall because I didn't want to make the peninsula any shorter than it already is. It is only 6 feet and any smaller seems like it won't be long enough. I would like to be able to have enough space for 6 girls to be working around it at one time and 6 feet will already be tight (3 girls on each side). I do really like moving the cooktop to the far left wall as well. It seems to give me a lot more bottom drawers for storage along the top wall which would be great. I was only able to fit an 18" cabinet between the cooktop and the wall oven. I'm not sure that is enough space on that side. I think I remember seeing that 24" of working space should be the minimum. I could get more space by using a range instead, but I don't really like that setup. I frequently use both the oven and the stovetop at the same time with 2 people cooking. So the person using the stovetop is always in the way of the person trying to open the oven. I would really like to have the 2 separated.

Although there would be some wasted space, you might consider putting the cooktop in the corner. That would allow you move the ovens over beside the fridge. In turn the sink and DW would need to move toward the door. In the larger drawing I enlarged the window, but if that is not possible due to the brick veneer, you could move the sink off-center to the window, but set the faucet off-center to the sink--more centered on the window to disguise the off-center sink. I eliminated the stub wall beside the fridge to provide more space between the ovens and hood. The fridge would then have a wood surround with a full depth cabinet above. Have you considered a MW in the oven stack? Images--corner cooktop

I just re-read your post and you had asked about the peninsula to bookcase dimension as well. It is 50" - I updated the floorplan too.

Your aisle widths look good. The only thing that jumps out at me and maybe you can confirm with your KD is that it looks like the island may be in the way of your route between the sink and fridge. It looks like you're ok between the prep area and the fridge if your prep area is between the range and sink.
Have you given any thought to putting a second sink in the island for extra prepping. If you entertain and if friends bring things it gives an extra prep space. Also when kids are helping out when they are older.

I don't know about heat issues if your cabinets come out beyond the door gasket. I'm guessing that yes there could be. But you could ask on the appliance forum.
Can or does your range come with a warming drawer as well as an oven? This is where you come into the balancing of needs over wishes.

With this layout I see the need for a prep sink. I might consider moving the stove over a smidge and adding a prep sink between the frig and range. That way you will have a separate clean-up area and can work with the natural flow of a kitchen.

The path between the sink and fridge is something we have discussed. We actually moved things a bit so it isn't as bad as it was in a previous revision.

If we put a prep sink in the island, what would be the best spot for it and the faucet? We would like to be able to have a wood or countertop material insert so we can use the island for other things when it isn't being used for prep - most likely serving. I'm not sure the best place to put the faucet so it will be as out of the way as possible.

If we put it between the fridge and range, would the corner be a good spot?

If we push the range wall lower cabinets back to the wall we would gain 3" of cabinet between the fridge and the corner. Is that enough space for a sink (27"). We would really like to keep the range centered if possible.

What depth is good for a prep sing - is a disposal necessary (or recommended)?
