Drumroll please....dishwasher decison has been made.

As some of you know I was struggling with the decision to go with dish drawers or traditional dishwasher. I found the Kitchenaids on sale at Sears for 40% (glad to have helped out so many with that sale), but we didn't buy, ugh. So, at that point I took it as a sign. We went with the F&P drawers. Seems that so many of you do love them, or if you didn't love them you acknowledged the learning curve and now you do.

I went to a different local dealer who seems to really know their stuff (and not try to talk me out of them). The salesman even told me he went to F&P/DCS for a conference...they put a full cake in the top drawer and a frozen pizza in the bottom. They came back after the cyles were run and voila--it was gone.

Since I didn't buy it in tax-free Delaware (as we usually do since we are close to the line), I managed to get him to give me some extras to compensate--reduced installation, free 10 year warranty on both motors, free salt for the water softner, and discounted 5 year extended warranty that is through their store. Done. It's coming Friday.

I have ordered the Crate&Barrel sugar dispenser to use for the powdered dish soap, as suggested by GWers. I'm ready.

Thanks for all the encouragement and suggestions on this very difficult decision for me.

Ohhh, and if you have water in the bottom of your drawers, he said it might be because the hose is not at the right position in the back. There is not supposed to be water in the drawer when it's done.

BKW, you will love the drawers, I promise. But what I am even more excited about (and seem to have missed in any discussion about F+P DDs) is the Crate&Barrel sugar dispenser! What a clever idea - I'm buying one this wknd.

Several years ago good friends gave away all of their HTs to the city gardens. They kept one Abe Darby, One Mme. Plant it here and their Minis. The minis are in raised beds with automatic watering and an easy fertilizing attachment. The soil after so many years is so rich it takes minimal care. They have had fun trying out wierd stuff, pineapple lillies (he has a small greenhouse,) a whole bed of Monarda, huge sunflowers, what ever tickles their fancy. They have stopped giving an annual tour of their gardens. For myself, when RRD struck last year, and having seen other gardens go down in ruin, I decided that I would branch out my interest keeping in mind that I am no spring chicken anymore. I bought a whole bunch of weird no care OP lilies, Chinese Tree Peonies (shaded blooms lasts a week if you are lucky and water me and I will die - I promise,) and other easy care stuff. I have been given permission this year from the Troll (DW) to buy some more roses if I want, as we had a late frost. I am going to replace French Lace even though it is a major pain to keep alive in our zone, a damask Dr. Henry Najat likes that I forgot the name of--- Belle something or other, and perhaps an other Alba. I am going to pass on MIP even though she won several awards at shows. Perhaps I won't. Something to kick around over the long winter. Getting old is not for sissies. I chose frameless cabs with slab wood drawer fronts because I like the cabinet access with frameless and the clean contemporary unfussy look of slab drawers IF they are made out of a beautiful wood. I picked premium QS oak because I found the wood flecking/graining spectacular. We have island seating because we have a tiny house and no formal dining room. So the eating area has a nice table that expands, but we (when it's the two of us) always eat at the island. If you get an island for eating, get super comfy stools. Trash recycling depends on where you live. Here in my town, aluminum, glass, and paper all go into the same bin. Hence, we only have two cans. I, unlike most, did not want to give up cab space for trash so we have a large sink cabinet and I have both cans, my disposal (batch feed BTW which I learned about on this forum) and some cleaning supplies under there. All fits no problem. Appliances: I got top of the line but shopped them off craigslist and ebay. All brand new but it was a risk. For me, the risk paid off. Saved about 6K. Figure out your lighting and switches ahead of time. I would imagine myself cooking in the space and where I would use what small appliances and had my outlets place accordingly. The two outlet ones I had placed horizontally because I knew I was getting glass subway tiles and it would fit within the tile. Flooring: we live in So. Florida, have a yard that holds water, a pool, and 3 little dogs with little bladders. We wanted no maintance and never ever to have to replace the floor. The only choice for us was tile. We got rectified porcelain because I wanted 1/16th grout joints and we used epoxy grout in a darker color because I wanted no maintance. I think that answers a bunch of your questions. Good luck!

Hmmm, I'm going back and forth on going stainless for the appliances. I was all set to bite the bullet and do stainless (I do like the look), but then I started reading again all the threads about everything people go thru to keep it looking nice... it seems even the folks who claimed it was no big deal to keep clean were spending significant effort doing it. (Maybe not significant to them, but it would be significant to *me* - it's all relative! ;-)) I think it might be back to white. I'm also rethinking the color of the countertops a little - I was going to do a darker countertop to contrast more with the light maple cabinets - not in the black/grey/dark green family, but more of a dark brown. (Silestone has a new color that has dark brown with specs of other colors including a sort of cream color that would work with the white appliances.) But now I'm thinking I really like the look of granite better - it has more "depth" than quartz, which looks kind of "painted on" to me. (You know what I mean?) And sealing it does sound easy enough that even I can cope with it (lol). So I'm actually thinking of more of a mid-color granite, still in the brown/tan family. With even lighter-color maple cabinets than I was originally considering, so I still have some contrast. There's a Hanssem finish I'm looking at called Alpine (I think) that's practically natural maple. Might all work better with the white appliances - not like white cabs (which I have now and don't want), but similar idea. Have to let it all gel in my head for a while... Abejadulce, it's true I don't cook much, so the 18" dishwasher would actually work for me. Actually, *any* dishwasher will be an improvement! I've never owned one ! I think I'm going to need lessons on how to use it. It will be my favorite part of my new kitchen! I love on Property Ladder when someone says they're going to put in a new kitchen and master bathroom and new hardwood floors and add french doors and a deck and landscaping and a new roof - and all for $20k. Of course, it ends up costing them $40k, but *still* - you couldn't do anything close to that in NYC. Isn't igloochic amazing?? I can't believe she's doing all of this for me!!! Ig, next time you're in NY, you must come visit! I'll cook you something wonderful in my new kitchen, and you can dine at my new dining table, relax with a cup of coffe on my new sofa, and then take a shower in my new spa-like shower!!! (Yeah, I know that's a little weird - I keep inviting that people should come take a shower in my house once the bathroom's done. ;-)) The cabinet place I've been speaking to that sells Medallion and Hanssem also sells Omega - I'll talk to them and see what the price diff would be. (Mesh back and door to cabinet? That's brilliant!!!)

love, I'm not trying to be sexist, but throughout the years whenever my kids attended birthday parties with kids from school, I cannot remember one time that a father hosted or was present at the party. I'm not saying it doesn't happen & I know that my kids were raised by me 100% so of course, their dad's were never there... but usually it's the mom that is into parties and stuff. I don't know about anyone else, but that has been my experience. In fact, as I'm writing this I am thinking back to when I lived with my exBF... any parties for his kids where school kids were invited, he was always at work. He would celebrate with family but never came to the ones where it was a bunch of kids. Okay, I have to admit, now that I am thinking about it, last year DH was there for SD's party but it was at our home and his nephew was one of the kids but he was the only guy there. He ended up sticking at the BBQ all day and running around, not really AT the party. I just wouldn't think most guys would be that interested in a kid party. I could be wrong. Hope it goes well no matter what happens.

Good for you! Your kitchen is just so incredibly beautiful....it will be the icing on the cake (or disappearing cake). Now just gotta find that sugar dispenser thread....love all the tips here!

I'm one of the ones who has F&P drawers and is happy with them. DH is the main dish washer (I'm the main cook) but I do load 'em up often enough. Just last night I asked DH if he was happy with the drawers - we've had them since July. He was saying how much happier he was with these drawers than with the old DW. He loves that he can run one drawer at a time and that he can load anything in either drawer.

Bee, I think you'll be happy!!

OK, so now, someone please explain the sugar dispenser? I looked for an old thread and found nothing. What's the deal?? :)

Here is the thread, scroll down. There is a point where the discussion goes towards the difficulty in putting in the soap. red_lover suggested the C&B sugar dispenser, has a little spout, and I have read it will dispense 1 tsp at a time, which might be very handy since the drawers call for 1 tsp pre rinse and 2 tsp wash.

I also love that F&P have put those prongs in the soap dispenser so that nobody uses the tablets, they can't get them in. Wonder if that is new.

I took a plastic squeese bottle (new) and cut the nozzle a little larger. Works great for dw detergent.

Congrats on your new dishwasher! May I ask where you bought yours? Sounds like we may live in the same area, close to the DE line. I have to cross the river though, if that gives you an idea. I'm in the market for a new dishwasher, sounds like you scored a great deal!

we went further away from "the line", towards Lancaster county, Martin Appliance. Not sure how far their service area is.

Two specialty stores in Wilmington are ABC and Hawkins. The first one is the one that told me that their customer satisfaction was 50/50 so they didn't recommend the drawers. That statement alone made me lose confidence in regards to their ability to repair these drawers if needed. Martin told me how little problem they have with the drawers, they just seemed happier to sell the appliance to me. I didn't check with Hawkins, so no opinion there.

I came home tonight from work and my C&B sugar dispenser arrived, I filled it with dishwasher powder, I'm ready.

Bee - glad you finally made the decision. Looks like you had a salesman with a a lot of experience. Can't wait to hear how you like them. Be sure to post a pic of them in your great kitchen.

I'm about to take the plunge and try the Chocolate Candy Brown in my dining room. There's no Ben Moore sample, so I'm going to have HD match and mix me up the sample size. They make one that is large enough to do a good test area. I'll let you know how it goes. Prill

OIC! I guess it is a little awkward filling that small dispenser but since I don't do dishes THAT often, it doesn't bother me that much. But what a great solution!

Congrats! I don't have DW drawers but I think they're cool. I'm laughing about the cake and pizza disappearing... sounds like a typical day at my house when my son has friends over!
