Sometimes I just love thrift stores! 3 Cute finds!

Thank you in advance for letting me share my enthusiasm for bargain hunting! No one else in my family seems to get excited about these types of things.

I went to a few of my favorite thrift stores yesterday and came home with these:

A great jewelled fruit topiary for the holidays for only $10. I couldn't even buy half of the jewelled fruit to make my own for that much!

I don't know why I was so drawn to this little tray table, but I love how rustic looking it was, and it was only $6!

And the best find of all! My daughter had been asking for an old fashioned bike for months now, and I just never could bring myself to pay several hundred dollars for something she'd likely never use. But this gem was only $35! It's actually a newer bike made to look old, so it has 5 gears, very comfortable seat, etc. She loves it, but to my surprise, I do too! I'll probably use it daily on our neighborhood trails.

Ohh, what neat stuff! I love the tray table. And have fun on your cool bike. I rediscovered the fun of biking 10 years ago -- such a great way to get out and enjoy the world.

Sorry you are laid up! is it your driving foot? that makes it even worse. TS's are great, when I broke my right wrist & right foot up by ankle I treated it myself- don't recommend that but I had no insurance & I knew they were going to take me into surgery for my wrist. I stablized it with ace bandage & 3 tongue depressers. After 3-4 days I wanted something a little more secure so hobbled into TS got a leather & steel wrist support & some heel cups (I had slipper on that foot) the heel cups are a thick lambs wool like stuff with a rough outside . I knew they would wear out fast & they only had 3 of them so I got out the grey duct tape, well that almost killed me as duct tape pretty well takes 2 hands to pull it out & you have to hold it & cut it. Anyway it took long time but I covered the bottom of the heel thing with duct tape, it cushions the poor sore foot & without it I would have been laid up a long time. I couldn't use crutches or a walker. I hopped about at end of 12 weeks went to chiropractor & asked him if he would x- ray that was bit of a shock! both bones had broke 1/2 way between wrist & elbow & were doing nicely went back where they should be, but both bones broke off at wrist 1 on inside of arm was healing well outside bone was a lump in my hand that dissolved eventually & I grew a covering for the missing bone so it quit feeling like my hand was missing after several months. Moral is don't treat yourself & more important don't look down when coming down a ladder beside a brick divider!! So Micki see if you can get ahold of some of those heel cups as it really makes it so much better while healing! Prayers for speedy recovery!! Jan

Here are some pictures of the gourds at the gourd festival and the class. I'll show you the ugly one first (mine).... The gourd I picked had an opening that was slanted. I wanted it to look like a cracked egg with little lizards crawling out (ok, I'm a little macabre!). The lizard pattern was from a Native American kit. I would like to paint the lizards a couple of shades of green and then stain the rest of the gourd so it looks natural. Here are some of the instructor's sample gourds: For this one, she used a doilie to create the pattern. It was my favorite. This is another simple but pretty one she did. Here is one with similar Native American designs to the one I did. Now here were some awesome sculpted gourds for sale at the festival. I was afraid to even look at the price!

Karen you and I will have to go together!! I'm staying at home today!! It's a good thing vacation is soon over and I have to go back to work. I DON'T WANA GO!!! Luvs, It is metal and kinda rusty. Very heavy. It doesn't have a bottom. I actually bought it as a gift for someone...we won't say who!! It's on it's way to fed ex.. Magpie, the ts's are gettin high here as well and very few things worth having. I think alot of people are selling in yardsales or ebay rather than donate. Although the lady that cuts my hair got a Fritz and Floyd (sp?) Christmas platter for $3!!!! I am really tickled about the garland. It's decorated with some of my vintage ornie's.. all stuff from the stash. Just need one more tree for the other side of the mantel. Thanks for the comments everyone.

All dogs should be treated like royalty, IMO! I know mine sure are! So, Bonnie, the question is what to do with the white sofa in the first pic - that looks like either metal or vinyl? And you either want to cover the pieces (is it two - one for the seat and one for the back? ) cushions that are on it now, or do something else? Just want to be certain of what you want to do before I offer suggestions. What is the budget for the project? Wish I lived near you, as we could whip up something to cover the current cushions fast, and make a coordinating cover for Billie's! My royalty - on a gorgeous made for Hitchcock leather sofa that I immediately bought a Sure Fit cover made especially for pets for. I only get to see the leather when I wash the cover! But all my kids are rescues, and they are very appreciative.

Good stuff. The bike is super, and the table is just the neatest thing. Does the tray seperate from the legs?

Open questions for all:
When you go junkin', are you looking with any particular room in mind, or do you just look at *everything*? (like I do)

Do you consider yourself more the antique mall/curiosity shop or general Goodwill/Sally/second hand store type? I should add garage sale and CL too, huh?

*Great* bike there, reno! If you can make out the name on the big tube there, DH could tell you anything you want to know about it, including what the parts are made of, how to take care of it, etc...he's a cyclist and our "bicycle specialist" when we visit Goodwill :)

Wish we had thrift stores besides Goodwill around here, but it does make the thrift-shop-concept easier.

Great finds! I love to go "Goodwill Hunting" as I call it. I have my favorites and am rarely disappointed. Next favorite is CL. And then Home Goods and a local consignment shop. Its a glorious day when I go to all of them!!

First of all I don't Sometimes love thrift stores I Always love thrift stores. I don't know anyone who loves thrift stores more than me. wish I had a friend nearby to go with!!

The table I would not have been able to resist! Great find! Cute vintage looking bike. I paid $500 for my vintage looking bike so that is a great deal. Hermosa brand? Never heard of that I am going to look it up

Ah -- I just read "Huffy" on the main tube, and lorriekay provided "hermosa", so I googled Huffy Hermosa. Looks to be a good solid touring bike :)

Wonderful finds! Especially the bike -- wow, what a terrific deal you got on that! And it's so cute! (It needs one of those little vintage bicycle baskets on the front now. :-))

Thanks all, for sharing in my excitement. Sometimes I hit all of my favorite haunts and come home with nothing, and other days it seems that there's a treasure in every store.

I've even gotten DH on board, and when he has a day off, he'll often suggest that we hit a few of my favorites, as he's an old book junkie, and will peruse the bookshelves for hours while I paw through the junk looking for a treasure.

Hahhah Flyleft! That's it! It's a Huffy "Beach Cruiser" (for all of the beaches we have here in Oklahoma....)

It's not a super high-end bike, but they're at least $100-175 elsewhere, so I feel like we got a really good deal. The tires are nearly new, brakes are great, etc. My DD is actually out riding it right now. :)

That's a great tray table. I'd be tempted to decoupage it (but then I've always wanted to decoupage *something*).

I was out doing errands today and stopped at goodwill before I came home, sat down at the computer and read this. I love any kind of bargain shopping: thrift, goodwill , estate sales etc. They more I have to dig around the more fun it is. My friends and family are also not interested and think I am crazy, but I love it when they come over and admire something and ask where I got it. You know my answer!

Yup, I saw "beach cruiser" as part of the name on some listings. I'm betting that one thing DH would say is that you need to check where the center tube links up with the vertical on the front wheel--he knows all these terms--but I know on some "women's" bikes that joint tends to go faster than other joints. I'll check with him if you want.

And, um, speaking of nice thrift store finds, did you happen to see my little score from yesterday? paid $19.99 for it :)

This is my favorite find at goodwill. It is an oil and signed on the back with the artists name and says Amsterdam. What I like most about it is that i moved from a lake in Mi. to Kansas and have been homesick ever since. The reflection on the water is painted so well it almost looks like a photgraph. Post a pic. of your art find
