Style Mavens - What do you think?

I am responding very positively to this BR. Right now, I have the Colonial Williamsburg thing going on in my BR. I like the mix of the traditional sleigh bed with the mirrored nightstands and those clear orb lamps. Here's my question -- I've seen those lamps everywhere and the mirrored furniture has been gaining momentum. Is this too "flavor of the month" to consider? Overall all I am trying to mix my traditional cherry furniture with some French country elements but would like to dip my toe (toe only!) into something a little more modernish.

I think it's gorgeous. It's has some trendy elements but overall I think It looks like a classic style.

Personally, I think it's a bit style-du-jour, but that doesn't make it bad. The silver lining behind some of those items being available everywhere is that you should be able to get them cheaper than you could a few years ago. The lamps would be an easy/big impact way to get the look. Don't spend too much and you'll feel better if they feel dated in a year or two.

As for the mirrored furniture, I think that look is best done one piece at a time. IMO, two is too-too. ;-) I have been looking at mirrored chests for my teenager's room and have not yet found anything inexpensive enough to justify a purchase with limited staying power.

Crate and Barrel has a mirrored piece but only the front doors are mirrored...the rest is black. It has overtones of French Country and might work for you. It is a hybrid and therefore not as ubiquitous as the mirrored look in the RMS room.

Don't know where you live, but some of these things may start to trickle into higher-end consignments shops at some point.

Wow, looks cool. We have a 1928 tudor (English Cottage Revival). That round hoop light fixture gave me bad dejevu, our house had one of those 50's ranch style lights in the kitchen, ack! You might want to bring back some of the period lighting: www.rejuvenation.com The leaded windows are gorgeous.

It has nothing to do with rich or poor, big house or small, professional or not. Just as IRL, people form bonds over their common interests and, of course, they will respond more to those they've known for years. Ditto ditto ditto. I'll add that yes, people are more apt to respond to photos. Decorating is a visual thing. I can offer almost NOTHING without seeing a photo. I also can't tell your style. I get really annoyed with the accusations of elitism and cliquishness. It's simply not true. Yes, there are people who've been here a long time. We've seen photos of each others' homes. We've seen various projects in the works, etc. Heck, I've never met AuntJen, but I "know" enough about her style from years spent on this board to see a Talavera Toilet and think immediately of her home. That's not cliquish, that's familiarity. I've never met Zipdee, but I know that when I see Jadeite green antique kitchen accessories, I think of her super cool retro kitchen immediately. Because she's in the "inner sanctum"? No! Of course not. It's because she routinely shares her progress with us, lets us peek at her photos, contributes frequently, etc. Lack of response on threads happens to everyone. It will happen more if the question is too vague. It will happen more if people can't see photos. It will happen more if we don't "know" your style. Hang around. Join in other conversations. Let us "see" your style, so that when you post a link to a dresser you're thinking about buying, we'll know if it would work with your house. Again, this is NOT cliquishness, this is familiarity. As far as the blogs, I don't see the big deal. People blog all the time about these things, and so what if FrenchDressing linked to hers? I honestly don't see what the uproar is all about.

Raro, when you get to your next alternative universe, make sure you look on eBay. :-) That's where I found my sink. I was on eBay every few days for a couple of months but at last, there it was, and I got it for a touch over $1200, which isn't bad when you consider what a new "farmhouse" sink WITHOUT a drainboard or backsplash costs (see link below). You may have to search a zillion different ways; I had searches that looked like this: vintage sink -doll -dollhouse -toy -bath -bathroom -powder or antique sink -doll -dollhouse -toy -bath -bathroom -powder ...but it ended up paying off. Thank you Trailrunner for your sage advise! I trust your methods implicitly, as I'm sure you know your way around the kitchen much better than I do, and cleaning up is always such an important part of process. I know your kitchen doesn't just look pretty, but sees alot of action, as I've seen the culinary creations you've turned out! You're right though, I plan to follow your suggestion of cleaning up spatters when they're fresh (so much easier), and will try those products you mentioned. MileHighDiva and cloud_swift- Just trying to keep the repairman away...and maybe will try the self-clean feature every once in awhile, but will try to avoid if I can, since I know how hot it gets during the cleaning cycle when I'd use it on my old Kitchenaid range. And yes, those french doors are really neat. I saw them on an episode of "Little People" when Jen and Bill were picking out the aplliances for their new home, but even for an average size person they make alot of sense. circuspeanut...my luck, I'd cut myself with the razorblade. Yes, the interior is dark-speckled enamel, but probably not the heavy-duty, high quality of your vintage range! They don't make anything to last anymore... PS I'm saving these tips by writing out and placing safely inside my copy of "Hints from Heloise", I inherited from my dear mother. Thank you all.

I don't like the crystal lamps on the mirrored furniture. One or the other, but not both. I do love the look that this kind of lighting brings but prefer them on wood furniture.

If you are looking for a French Country style but want something a bit out of the norm, why don't you take a look at some mercury lamps or mix and match your elements.

I agree with Parma. As for the mirrored nightstands, if you're leaning towards French Country, how about using some mirrored pieces with a more FC look to them? They may not look dated as soon as the more Contemporary ones.

Beautiful look, but not very practical. I can see my dogs nose prints all over those mirrored chest, and forget about them if you have young children.
