Pip, I hope you truly love Peacocks because they can be hell to live with. We have them in our area and most are in favor of culling (killing) to keep the flock size down because of the nuisance they cause. They are not native to the area. They make lots of noise, they poop on everything and they can be aggressive. I would not be encouraging it to approach you or your house or worse, teaching it that you have food.

It seems that peacock feathers are in for decorating this year, I see them in the magazines, so maybe he just wants to be part of the trend?

They are just so stunning! I know they're noisy and the make a mess, but so do Canada Geese which we have tons of and they are nowhere near as gorgeous.

And Wild Turkeys which can be so dumb that they go crazy every time a screen door slams even though they hear it 2 dozen times a day for most of their lives.

We had a turkey living in our yard last winter. Totally annoying, and it drove the cats crazy. We hope she doesn't return this year. But the peacocks are much prettier!

I'm not worried about the birds sticking around for too long as we have a large bird dog, who isn't at the house yet but will be arriving as soon as we move in and I'm sure will drive them off our property. Most neighbors in our neighborhood have dogs which keep the peacocks off their property. I'm a little apprehensive about mating season when they are up all night screaming (there's a canyon next to our house where they congregate), but I do love birds and nature so it's neat to have them in the area.

Anywhere there is water around here , there are Canada Geese. They are filthy. I walk around a college campus with a pond and it's like an obstacle course near the pond, dodging goose poo.

Ohhh what a handsome boy. We have chickens and a rooster and are thinking of adding some guinea fowl and perhaps some pea fowl. We also have wild turkey in our area. Our favorite wild turkey was named Charlotte and she made her home during the day on our deck. She came back for two years. I loved having her there even though we were inundated with turkey pooh. Even if the peacock gets aggressive as any male bird can all it takes is a broom by your side to keep them at bay.

What an absolutely gorgeous setting you have there. Living in a beautiful natural setting like you have gives awesome opportunities to see wildlife that many people will never see. Thanks for sharing!

I hope you display a photo in your home of your first "guest".

We have issues with Canadian geese in our area. I remember about 25 years ago we would actually drive about 30 minutes to some swap land to view the geese as they stopped over on their migration. Now many don't migrate and they are a PITA.

I can't believe it came right in the house! How funny. And they are pretty. Will your dog chase them or freeze on point?

We used to have some peacocks in our neighborhood. One neighbor brought in a pair, and well, then there were more. But I haven't heard them in a long time and wonder if the coyotes or bobcats ended their reign. They sounded almost like a cat to me, at least from a distance. me-OW, me-OW, me-OW.

We had a single peahen in the 'hood, but I haven't heard or seen her recently. She seemed to enjoy eating flowers and hung out around construction sites...maybe workers left food. I recall seeing her on a neighbor's roof one morning right next to the plastic owl meant to ward off other birds. Guess that didn't work.

I bet your girls were so tickled. Short of seeing a unicorn (which might not surprise me in so magical a setting), I can't think of any animal my girls get more excited over.

Yes, they are a nuisance, like most terribly beautiful things (swans, supermodels, etc.)

Sounds like Pipdog will take care of these fellas.

In the meantime, your view, with the iconic (cypress, is it?) is so fabulous! Is there any path to the water? The view is so soothing, and lucky you, on the coast where you get those sunsets that just plunk into the ocean.

mtn, we were doing demo that day so the girls were with family and they missed it! I took a video with my phone and they went crazy when they saw him. Every evening around dusk before the birds jump into their trees the girls take flashlights and go "peacock spotting". They love these birds and it is so fun to watch my little nature lovers in the making.

The tree is actually a Japanese black pine -- there are three of them off our back patio.

marti8a, Pip will be chasing them off the property. We're going to have to configure a dog run on our yard since he won't be able to roam free like in our current, more urban neighborhood. There are coyotes in the area and there's a fairly steep fine if your dog attacks or kills a peacock. Not that Pip would, but still....

debrak2008, those Canadian geese are something! I spent time growing up on a lake in Michigan and we couldn't even walk in our backyard because of all the poop. And their honking used to drive my parents nuts! Our neighborhood association had a company come and remove hundreds of them from the lake, only to have all of them and more come back to the same lake next season.

Pip, your post made my morning! What an experience. I live in Central Texas and we do not have anything like that going on. Just a ton of deer. Thank goodness they do not come in the house!

Ah, we've met a Cooking Forum member who lives in your area, when we were at dog shows in Long Beach.

We once lived down the road from some peafowl, and one day we welcomed a guest. She went to the guest room to get settled and used the bathroom which had a large skylight. Heard her scream when the peacock flew up onto the skylight!

Pipdog-here I have been looking for the perfect peacock print to put in my dining room and you get the real thing! You are so lucky! It must he a good sign. (I know they are totally trendy right now, but I have always loved them, they are such a beautiful bird.)
