Gray rarely exists in architectural paint color collections. Very few paint colors are achromatic gray. Big old long story how and why that it is. Suffice it to say what many people label as "gray" are colors knocked back so far they're closer to neutral gray than the root or parent colorant. The root colorant that's been broken to neutralize it or move it closer to a true neutral gray.

Colors are colors and it's best to approach the whole color, not just one attribute like undertone. Have to deal with the whole color all at once: masstone, undertone (if there is one), chroma (or colorfulness), and value (how light or dark). Here's how you might want to go about doing that.

Each brand orders their colors differently. One thing they all have in common is organization by hue family. You're going to want to look in the area (maybe areas) between green and violet. That will put you in the true blues and blue greens. Stay a couple steps or sections away from greens. Also stay a couple steps or sections away from violet. It's in the area in between green and violet hue families that you'll find silvery blue chips. Take several and look at them in a natural light source. Don't use the light simulator thingies in the store.

Once you have swatches that you feel are "silvery blue", you can use those chips to look for more, similar colors in the sections that might be labeled as neutral, muted, or complex neutrals.

I found a great silvery blue - BM Silver Crest. I'd start with that - and see if you want more blue or gray. This color DOES change during the day. Some parts of the day it looks more blue or gray.. I would imaging this will going to be the same with ANY sliver/blue paint. I love this color - check it out!

If you find the color you think is the one, going a bit lighter and a bit more grayed down may look the way you want it to look on the walls. Keep in mind that a color may look one way when compared to another, but give a different effect when painted on. I used BM Gray Wisp recently, which look gray/green next to a blue sample, but looks more blue than green on the walls. Compare a color to another color, but also look at it next to white and in different lighting conditions.

Also remember that grays look very different in different lights. A gray we like alot in the LR, BM Silver Lake, looked totally wrong in our BR - same north exposure, I'm not sure why it looked wrong in one and great in the other. We have a large tree in our backyard which casts green on a couple of rooms on that side of the house which definitely affects color choice. If you can, I'd recommend finding the chips per funcolors directions and taping them on the wall(s) you want to paint. Leave them there for a while and then take off the ones that are clear misses. Keep whittling the group down to several possibles and THEN buy actual paint samples. We painted our samples right onto the wall, but some prefer to paint on a sample board propped on the wall. Our method required more primer to cover our "artwork," but we just added a primer spot coat when we were using the primer elsewhere. It worked just fine.

Funcolors, thanks for taking the time to explain. I've heard the words, value, and hue etc but I never really understood what it meant when choosing paint colors. I used your idea and I think I may have found a color that looks promising.

Saypoint, now that you mention it, I remember someone telling me to hold the paint chip against a white surface to see what the color really was. Thanks for that tip. I had completely forgotten that. It's been a long time since I looked for a specific color rather than just finding a color I liked and decorating around it.

Tinker, I love that color. My only problem is I don't have any BM dealers in my area. It's either Home Depot or Lowes for me. I used to detest Behr paints but their new paint and primer in one paint is really good and covers well.

I found a color from Behr that's called Light French Gray, and it looks similar to the one on your walls Tinker. We'll see what happens when it gets on my wall.

Suzannes1.. After reading your post, I want to smack myself in the forehead..LOL..I never even thought of how the trees outside can cast a glow into the room. The room I want to paint the silvery blue gray faces the backyard which is filled with red maples at the moment. I should have realized because even when I pull the shade down, the shade has a reddish hue to it. Fortunately, those leaves should all be falling soon.
