Choosing an Exterior Paint Color-Can I get some advice from an Expert?
We are in the process of choosing an exterior paint color, and I am BEYOND frustrated!!
I've looked at color chips, Pinterest and Houzz until my brain hurts. I've also read about color theory, tried to understand the Munsell color wheel, and evaluated the hue, LRV, chroma and value of each potential color. We have painted 3 different samples on our siding--and they look NOTHING like the color chip! I was certain Gauntlet Gray was the perfect color, as I wanted a fairly dark warm and rich gray. On our house it looks like battleship gray--nothing warm about it. We have samples on each side of the house-so the problem is not specific to the sun/light exposure. We have also painted a 3'x5' piece of plywood to try out the color, and I've looked at that piece of plywood in different exposures & times of day.
Any suggestions for a nice, WARM gray/brown color? Here's a pic of our house. THE ROOF IS NOW A DARK GRAY.
Thanks for any advice! Can you all tell I'm a little frustrated??

Comments (13)fairytalebaby, I'm so excited for you. I remember your beautiful setting when you posted over on Building a Home. When we picked out paint colors before we had furniture we also stuck to neutral. It's hard enough to choose paint when you have actual materials you are trying to match but without the furniture, neutrals are your friend. As for the ceiling. There is no rule, only personal preference. I was formally a white ceiling kinda gal but the more I looked at new homes and some beautiful shots here on Garden Web, the more I really wanted to try some color. I love it now and can't even imagine going back to white ceilings. I'm a total convert. Some like a 50% cut of their wall color. Some like light gray (like Ellen Kennon's Gustavian Gray) Some like cream. It's totally up to you! Good Luck and can't wait to see what you're picking out for your interior! Beautiful Home! Comments (34)I agree, the Pearl is too yellow. Still trying to decide between the Antique Parchment and Linen :). I reached a new low as I knocked on doors in the rain, asking if I could hold paint samples up to trim. For better or worse I told the installer we'd use the Teakwood! I felt relieved for about a minute....and then started thinking things like: is it too dark? Is there a PURPLE undertone???? Is the finish too flat? Ha! I might be certifiable! Wish I was someone who didn't care. I might have an ugly house, but I'd be blissfully oblivious :) Well, I guess another option would be having enough money to hire someone like Maria Killam... This line of siding is special order (the warehouse doesn't stock it yet), so we needed to order in advance. I worked up enough nerve to ask our installer (a relative) if the trim wrap was special order, too. It's not, so I have more time to think over the trim color! It's been rainy today and yesterday, so I'm especially glad to have more time since I'd like to be sure I like the trim color when there is some sun. I really wish we could do it all a step at a time - windows installed first, then siding up, then pick a trim color. Seems like it would be easier than trying to envision it ALL. Comments (11)That's a pretty cool room you got there. I love those big windows that open to the garden. The brick wall is not something that i would prefer in the entryway.Paint up with some light tone to get a more homely feel. I have arranged the furniture according to your current layout with some changes in the decor. I personally don't like the TV placement that you currently have. But that can be an exception if you do not use it frequently. Add in more plants and add some wall art in complementary shades. You could swap the rug and curtains and you're room wood have an industrial feel which would look great even if you retain the brick wall entrance. It was a popular color up in the Boston area and it looked very nice on several house styles.
