Exterior color help - can't get color I really want for siding!

last modified: 9 years ago

I feel like I'm going crazy, so hopefully I can ask this semi-intelligibly! I have no design/color confidence and really need some outside perspective. I tend to overthink and overthink, and then do nothing. Well, I need to do something this time, but I keep worrying I'll make the wrong choice and hate it. My husband wanted a choice by tomorrow (I've had since Friday), but I'm not sure that will happen...

My husband and I bought our house (a foreclosure) a year ago. I feel like I've had to make way too many decisions since then! One thing I didn't think I'd have to decide on, was the exterior color. The bank painted before selling, and I really like the current color (Sherwin Williams warm stone, trimmed with mega greige). I knew when we bought it that the bank painted over rotten batten board in the back, but assumed we would find a solution that included keeping the color the same or maybe just a bit lighter, etc. Anyway, my husband has determined the only option he his willing to use is steel siding. We are using Alside steel siding.

Here is a link that might be useful colors

Steel siding is not very popular.....there are hardly any color choices and of course none of them are close to the current color (though the installer, my husband's relative, says the Tuscan clay is so close I won't even notice a difference!). I might pick up the color deck for the "select" line of colors tomorrow, but it is a bit of a scary scenario to choose from that collection because it is new (color durability less tested, the pricing higher and not even completely set yet).

Here is a link that might be useful select colors

We will be doing just the back now, which can't be seen at all from the street, but in the next 6 to 10 years, we will complete the house. We are also replacing all the windows with white vinyl with grids. For this reason, I hoped to use a white/muted white color for trim, to make the windows stand out less.

In the regular line of colors, I am currently considering the Tuscan Clay and Monterey Sand colors. While I've seen mid-toned taupe colors that I like quite a bit on houses, I feel like the Tuscan clay might be a bit heavy/dark for such a warm color. I'd like my eventual landscaping to pop a bit more than it seems it would with this color. Another huge detractor for this color is the neighbor's house is pretty much identical in siding color (though they have a shake roof, and some bright turquoise, blue and red trim along with mostly white trim) I had a friend come over and look at things with me yesterday, and she thought the Monterey Sand might be too light and make our large home (3,000 square feet), seem less cozy. I can see that, and the front of the house also faces south west, so it might also be sort of washed out most of the day since it is a light color. I wish there was a darker version of that color, as I prefer the tone of it. I would like some other opinions on this light color, and if it would wash the house out/remove the quaint factor. I'm not usually a fan of large houses and prefer modest and cozy, but my husband likes large houses, so this was a compromise.

Here is our house as it is currently painted (taken late last summer). Excuse the landscaping, it is in the planning phases.

From side

Here are a few pictures of the current color options, with possible trim colors

If anyone is still reading and comments - I might have to take better pics tomorrow...it was so sunny today and it was getting later by the time I took pics. Dark color is Tuscan Clay and the next is my lightest possible trim color (linen), the next is basically the color of the vinyl windows.

Same color combos, 1st taken from near the street. I am terrible at visualizing this all on a larger scale. I want the trim to definitely read white, but I don't want it to be stark. The window color looks more white than the trim in person :). The difference is minimal, though.

I think this is the only decent pic of have of my other trim option with this color. The light was getting really yellow as the sun was starting to set. It is still the Tuscan clay, but with a little darker trim color called Antique parchment. I like this color, but worry it won't read as white with the bright windows. The brick mold and fascia will be wrapped in whatever trim color we choose. I would probably also paint the post and porch ceiling this color, and it might look pretty beige under those shadows.

If anyone is still with me, I'll post a few pics with the Monterey Sand color!

This is the Monterey Sand, with the lighter white (linen) color. The lighting changed dramatically right before I took this, so that might be why I like it. It may be too washed out in normal light.

Same color, further away. The blob is my daughter :)

Same colors closer, but again, earlier in the day, it looked pretty much lighter....this was at dusk.

If you made it this far, thanks! Sorry about the poor photos. I will try to take more tomorrow, but wanted to post as my children were occupied. Any thoughts or opinions are welcome.

You are right, the current color is very nice. Either of the Alside colors would be acceptable. Of the two you are considering I prefer the Monterey Sand.

I prefer the Tuscan but either will work and look beautiful. It's a big decision so I can relate to your anguish.

Bathroom color - do I get the color I really want, or...?

I'm not sure what brand Stonington Gray is - typically when I pick a paint color I collect hundreds of chips of all different brands and then choose the one I like, and have it custom-color mixed into a Behr can by Home Depot (unless it's a Behr color). Very often they have the color in their computer, even if it's not their brand. But Stonington Gray isn't exactly a common name, so it very well could be the one you are referring to. It's not too dark, not too light - just right. I also have it in my scrapbooking room (I don't have a picture of the bedroom). (I'm trying to upload it onto Tinypic but it's not working right now) You're right my SIL probably would not be in my bathroom, maybe, but I know she'd be quirked about it. Several years ago we put new doorknobs throughout the house - satin-nickel football-shaped ones. 2 years ago when they were building their house they did not put those doorknobs in (which is what the builder offered) simply because we had them. I didn't care, but she did. (Did I mention they live 3000 miles away?) never ending - *I* never have stopped, but as you know he did... after I ruined the tables (first I tried stain, then paint...I just suck at it), he (HE!) suggested we go buy new ones. So we did. Then he wouldn't commit to painting the cabinets, so I went and hired a refacing company. I ordered a new mirror frame, and he did agree to paint. He says. We shall see. If I hired out I'd have to take a day off work, and I can't exactly do that. I'm going to have to take 2 days off for the cabinets as it is. But something strange happened the other night. He hung a ceiling fan for me. He did complain (to be expected - says that he JUST put that fan in there - 9 years ago), but I said nothing, and he turned and got his tools. My son was even surprised...

Love your inspiration color. Maybe lighten it up by 25%. I think paints have stuff added to them to slow fading. I would remove the shutters. Then maybe a blue or lime green for the door

Yes the pillars are structural I am not sure if they are all needed but that will be determined by a pro. As for colors A nice shade of gray/ green with that roof and brick will be nice I would remove the shutters since most of them are too small anyway.Your gutters need to be the same color as the roof they are not a design element.Maybe just wood cladding for the pillars painted the same as the trim in the green some nice big planters by the door with seasonal plantings and then decide on a door color

I like your third combination but think the Intellectual Gray from Marylee might be better for the siding. Is your tan roof more warm or cool? Another option might be Intellectual Gray with white trim and shiny black door.

That is a tough decision. I think I prefer the Tuscan; the Monterey Sand doesn't contrast much with the white trim from the street view.

Are you concerned about the same colors being available in the future, when you do the siding on the rest of the house?

I agree, either combo will be lovely. I prefer the first. I've found I always prefer a slightly darker colour in metal siding.

Thanks for all the votes of confidence in the colors being ok!

jlc712 - Well, our installer said not to worry about it being available, but I am a worrier, so of course I am! He said the colors that are in that regular line from Alside, have been around forever and doesn't see them going away. If we choose from the line painted with the select colors, it could be less sure. My thoughts are that it could go either way with the 2 lines. The regular line doesn't seem to have very current colors, as they are mostly pretty light as far as depth goes, and darker colors are being used on houses lately. So, if the new line gained momentum, they could phase out the old. On the other hand, if people choosing steel siding, don't appreciate the pricier color line, the select might never take off. The reason for the timeline is we have 5 yrs left on the mortgage on our former home. We rent it out now, so at that time we will either sell and have the sale money to work with, or in the course of a 1yr - 1 1/2, we should be able to pay for the rest of the siding with rent income. Though it would be way less than ideal, if it did happen that we couldn't get the color any longer, you can't see the back color at all from the street, not even while driving up the street in either direction. There is woods behind the house, and during the summer months you can't see our house through the trees...during the winter, you can see a bit.

Since most said Tuscan Clay, any thoughts on which color to use for trim? Would the more off white be better, or the brighter shade? If better pics are in order for that, what type of picture would be best (straight on view up close or from the street, etc. Do you need a pick with the trim colors near the roof (since a lot of trim would be against the roof lines. Like I mentioned, I want the trim to read as white and not lighter beige. I wasn't sure if the darker would do that if the windows were lighter. I know that more off white colors look better with warmer colors though, so I hesitate to pick the whiter color. I also want it to look white, but not stark.

And finally, a pic of the neighbor's house. Is it horrible to even consider a color that is nearly identical? The neighborhood is all houses built in the 80's and early 90's, all different elevations.

I had found a builder that shows some pictures of different color combination packages. Picture 5 is Tuscan Clay with Antique Parchment (the darker trim color) accents. I think this must be the gables. So I guess their trim is brighter white?

Here is a link that might be useful siding color examples (I think they are probably using vinyl, but the same colors)

I like the color scheme a lot in that link, MV. It looks like you could replicate that color combination completely, if you wanted - with white trim and antique parchment in your gables/peaks/eaves if you wanted a 3-color combination.

I'm partial to bright white trim on a house, but that's just me. I like the crisp look.

I have thought about the roof color and I think I've ruled out the lighter color for the siding just because it gets washed out in the sun and looks white.

The new dilemma is I've found a near match to my current color in their new select line of colors. It is maybe a bit less green, more brown. Now I've looked at the tuscan clay color so long I'm wondering if it's better with my roof than my current color!!!!! Thoughts? Would my current color work well with the creamy white trim? I would like to have some whitish trim to blend in white windows we will have?

Which color would be a better option for siding that will be around a LONG time? That's what really makes this decision hard for me.... the longevity factor.

Whatever you do, you'll be happier with a trim color that is most similar to the window color. An off white trim with bright white windows would look odd, imo. The roof color & Tuscan Clay harmonize well together, to my eye.

awm03 thanks so much for your input!

I finally figured out a good way to see the roof with the colors. Stuck my head out the window before the neighbors were up.....they probably already think up nuts out there taping things up the house....taking pictures, etc! Don't need them to see me hanging out the widows!

Tuscan clay on the left, color close to current on right.

Thanks for looking! I'm going to have to blame some of my indecision on pregnancy hormones, but if you ask my husband he'd probably say I'm always like this :)

Either looks nice. Toss a coin!

There is a house near by with your roof color & siding color similar to the sample on the right that I think looks really nice. I'll take a photo & post it, maybe that will help you visualize the darker color. I'm out to run errands, so give me a couple of hours.

Well, the one on the right sure seems to echo the current house color. Isn't that what you originally wanted and do you still want that look? If so, it seems like the house body color is nailed, at least...

steph, yes that was what I originally wanted :) I might still, I just want honest feedback on whether that color even looked good with our roof and would look right with the light trim! I spent so much time looking over the other (tuscan clay) color, that now I need to make sure it isn't the better overall choice for with the roof, etc. I originally would have JUMPED at the obvious close match, since I hadn't considered changing the color. But now I've definitely considered it, so I'd like opinions on what exactly "goes" best.

This is such a long term choice I want to be sure I wasn't just going with what seemed safe to me, since it was what I had and "thought" looked good. As I said before, I'm not color confident, so the opinions of others, matter to some extent.

Sounds crazy, I know! I'm going to blame it on pregnancy hormones, because it's nice to have something to blame it on!

I totally get second-guessing, especially when what you THOUGHT you couldn't have, you find out you can. You have a convenient excuse, I say exploit the hormone card! (Alas, some of us don't have that option!) lol In all seriousness, it is a major decision and I think it's wise to take time with it to consider all options.

I was wondering what choices exist for trim color here. Can we see pics of the new color with the existing trim options? And, just for giggles, are there new trim options you want to throw into the fray?

PS - It might also be fun to goggle house colors with reddish roofs and see if anything strikes your fancy. Given, you know, we are either on a lark or a very serious research project, depending on how you want to frame it.

Thanks for sticking with me! In real life I can't keep bothering people cause they'll think I'm NUTS! I had a friend come over the other day and look over the first color deck with me, she helped me narrow it down to the Tuscan clay and another green color she liked, but when I google that color it strikes me as weird with grass and trees around it. Anyway, I'm going to see her tonight, and I feel so stupid telling her I didn't pick yet and they DO have the original color....!

The sun moved, so I thought I'd throw that pick on as well.

I'll work on some pics with the trim options, though I think it would have to be something in the more off white family since this color is darker. I'm supposed to be homeschooling...

If it helps to know what I gravitate toward, I like homes more in the cottage range of style....creamy front porches, etc. Color scares me on a lifetime siding purchase, and the neutral tones seem safer. Maybe that's because I used to live in a baby blue aluminum siding and pinkish brick ranch, and my husband said we COULDN'T paint it! The windows will have white grids, if that matters.

FWIW, the current color looks good with the roof (to me on my monitor.) In the most recent picture above, I prefer the sample siding color on the right which is closer to your current color.

BTW, I completely understand how difficult this is. I have been there.

OK, here's the house. The roof is a red brown -- not sure if that comes across in the photo. And the trim is cream with white windows and looks terrific! So please disregard my earlier comment about how that combo wouldn't look right. The siding color is a a grayish brown.

Be sure to click on the picture to enlarge it. You can see the colors better.

Thank you everyone for your comments and input! Awm thanks taking the time to take the picture! It is nice to see those colors with the roof! I hope to be able to respond more tonight and maybe add some pics of the Teakwood with some trim options....I don't have many since they are aluminum wraps rather than paint colors. I was busy with grocery shopping, kids etc., this afternoon - life outside of siding and trim :)

Well, I was too tired last night to upload any photo's and was busy this AM. I got a few pics taken of the teakwood with some trim options, though. It's cloudy today, so that may make the pics easier to see.

I'm leaning one way, but am hoping to hear some thoughts to cement the decision. I need to make a decision today; hubby is not happy with indecision. I realize it may be hard to differentiate these colors online.

    Last combo

    Teakwood, Linen, white vinyl

    Teakwood, Linen, white vinyl

    Teakwood, Linen, white vinyl

    Teakwood, Linen, white vinyl

My objective is to tie-in white vinyl windows, with trim that reads white at first glance, but isn't stark. I would also likely make the fascia, the cream color, though I still have time to decide exactly where it goes on the front, and I'm not sure it matters that much on the back. Part of me wonders if the siding color is too dark to pull off white trim and still have a soft, non-modern look???? Awm's pic above is a bit contrasty for me. Anyway, in person, the Linen definitely reads the whitest and is almost the same as the window color. Antique parchment seems the most muted, but is really close to pearl. Pearl may be a touch "brighter"/more yellow. Do you think any of these are creamy enough, on a larger scale?

Thanks for any opinions! Sorry this is so pic heavy!

I prefer the linen, and after that the antique parchment. The teakwood will look great and since you are only using it on the back to start, and it is close to the color you have on there now, it is an especially good choice.

remodelorbuild - is it the crispness of the linen you prefer? I'm trying to decide it there are any obvious undertones in the antique parchment. Do you see any?

Judging by the name, "antique parchment", I would expect some yellow undertone, but on my monitor it looks a bit "greyed." I think I like the linen best because it is closer to the vinyl and it is a little more classic look. I'm assuming that the trim is also a steel/aluminum product and that it will be on there a long time, so classic is better to me in that case. I think it is just personal preference at this point.

I like both the antique parchment and the linen, and I think that either would look good. Linen seems a bit less warm in tone and lighter than the other two, but judging on a monitor is always tricky.

When you look at your combinations, is there one that just feels yummier to you? Seems to please your eye whenever you look at it? That is the one you should go with.

I am with you in taking your time to get it right. I see houses where the colors are just almost but not quite right together (and sometimes very wrong!) I took over a month, I think, to settle on my house and trim colors -- I was painting so I had infinite choices, which made it hard, but 12 years later I still love my colors and get compliments.

The Pearl seems too warm/yellow for the teakwood, OMM (on my monitor). I think either of the other can work great, depending on whether you want three-tone or two-tone.

I agree, the Pearl is too yellow. Still trying to decide between the Antique Parchment and Linen :). I reached a new low as I knocked on doors in the rain, asking if I could hold paint samples up to trim.

For better or worse I told the installer we'd use the Teakwood! I felt relieved for about a minute....and then started thinking things like: is it too dark? Is there a PURPLE undertone???? Is the finish too flat?

Ha! I might be certifiable! Wish I was someone who didn't care. I might have an ugly house, but I'd be blissfully oblivious :) Well, I guess another option would be having enough money to hire someone like Maria Killam...

This line of siding is special order (the warehouse doesn't stock it yet), so we needed to order in advance. I worked up enough nerve to ask our installer (a relative) if the trim wrap was special order, too. It's not, so I have more time to think over the trim color! It's been rainy today and yesterday, so I'm especially glad to have more time since I'd like to be sure I like the trim color when there is some sun.

I really wish we could do it all a step at a time - windows installed first, then siding up, then pick a trim color. Seems like it would be easier than trying to envision it ALL.

Thanks again for all the help!

" is it too dark? Is there a PURPLE undertone???? Is the finish too flat?"

It may be all of those things, but it will still be great! I think the teakwood color will look really sharp on your house. Be sure and post pictures when the job is finished. Glad this decision is over for you.

    p.s. I vote for Antique Parchment -- it's softer.

I totally get the knocking on people's door thing...the good news is MOST people are flattered by it. Envisioning an entire exterior in a siding color is exceedingly challenging - before we even get to the lighting issue. The good news is that teakwood is so close to what you have - and you know you like it. I'd say you are very close to the finish line!

I know this thread is SO old but if any of the helpful people who commented then are still here, I wanted to link you to a new thread that has some after pics in it! The house still isn't finished, but the initial changes discussed here, were completed. I feel badly that I never came back to give the results! I was just so sick of it!

Here's a link that might be useful

Is there a way to edit the title of this thread to let people know of the update? I can't figure it out...

No, you can't edit the title. Your new thread is the best way to get people's attention and it's good you linked this thread, too. I'd let this one drop, but you may also find comments here, now that it's revived. If no one comments on your new thread, just post something on it yourself to bump it up until they do. I'm sure they will. I love how your house turned out, but I have no experience with siding, so don't feel like I can be helpful.
