Need Help Picking Light Fixtures for Bedrooms

I'm getting ready to list my apartment with a realtor and need to replace the bedroom ceiling fans that are very old and quite shabby. Instead of replacing them with costly ceiling fans, I was thinking of just buying simple light fixtures to keep the costs down. I'm now having a very difficult time deciding what to purchase. I'm unable to actually go shopping and need to purchase on-line so any suggestions or links would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try lampsplus.com. They seem to have a great selection, reasonable price ranges, and free shipping on many things.

If you can give us an idea of your style, perhaps some here could help search for lighting for you, too.

FWIW, if ceiling fans are fairly typical in bedrooms in your area (especially if you don't have central AC), you can get a simple ceiling fan with light kit for well under $50. Check out lowes.com which is offering free shipping on anything that can be shipped by ordinary means (meaning not by freight truck) on all orders over $49. They also have quite a few nice and inexpensive simple light fixtures - flushmounts and semi-flushmounts - so it's worth a look on that site. I was very pleased with the fixtures I got there; we sold our previous house last year and had to replace virtually every light fixture in the place, since most of it was tacky worst-of-the-80s fake brass with the finish peeling off. I think the only ones we didn't replace were in the garage and cellar!

I also hit the clearance section at bellacor.com and got some very good deals on light fixtures there. There's one thing you have to pay attention to in their clearance department, though: up by the first "add to cart" button it will say something like "5 available to ship within 2 business days", but those are NOT the ones on clearance. Look further down the page, to the left of the SECOND "add to cart" button, and it will tell you how many are available at the clearance price. Usually it's only one or two per style because clearance items are typically customer returns (they're checked over to make sure all the parts are there though).

The kitchen is 12' x 19'6" and is open to the family room which is about 14'x 18'8". We have 2 recessed lights over the fireplace in the family room, as well as 3 various lamps and 2 windows. There is a bay window in the kitchen and patio doors, as well as a window over the sink, so during the day we get plenty (sometimes too much) light. At night it's a different story. It can be pretty dim sometimes. We only have 200 watts above the table right now, and the big old ugly flourescent light box (4) 40 watt tubes, in the center of the room, and a flush mount fixture over the sink (2) 40 watt bulbs. So over the table we would be gaining 160 watts with the new fixture, 20 watts with where the light box currently is (although I don't know how a flush mount with 180 watts compares to flourescent tubes that are 160 watts) and also gaining 20 watts over the sink. I don't think we are going to do under cabinet lighting, because our budget is really dwindling. Would UC lighting be very helpful? If so, I may reconsider. We just don't want to keep adding extras we won't recoup when we move in a couple of years. BTW, if anyone has an opinion on the brushed steel vs dark bronze (which looks almost black IRL), I'd love to hear it. (SS appliances with some black on them, ss sink, brushed nickel faucet, probably satin nickel cab hardware, and 2 interior doors with antique pewter levers). I could always look at some other fixtures. I've seen some that I didn't like quite as well, but could get 500 watts over the table and 300 watts in the center of the room. Would this be a better option? Sorry, I'm all over the place on this. I hate pressure to decide quickly!

Okay, color of furniture, art, rug, drapes? Wall color isn't decided in a vacuum, nor should it just be based on the flooring and other rooms. You would probably get better help if you posted pictures of the said room and others in Design Dilemma.

It looks like the height at which current fixture is hung is fine, so you can use that as a guide, and the size of current fixture is also good. Any fixture that you get, you'll want to have on a dimmer, generally speaking. Is this your furniture in these pics? If you offer more of an idea of what you are seeking to change about this look, what styles you are interested in, etc., it might help, in terms of specific lighting suggestions. And as a side note - I don't know if this is your furniture, etc. - but that metal art + sideboard = fabulous.

I'd keep sepia [?] going, and not add black, the darker option, cause to me it competes with it, and sorta squashes its softness. Thanks for the responses. If anyone has any suggestions as far as specific fixtures, that would be great. I'm looking for something somewhat traditional and simple. Whenever I go to any of the sites the choices are just too overwhelming and then I can't seem to make a decision. Story of my life lately. LOL
