What a beautiful piece! I think your proposed use would be perfect, as long as it's hung securely. No need for a shelf, in my opinion, it would look fine floating.

I think it could go on the wall, as long as there was something below it to anchot it, such as the sofa bed you are proposing.

What I am wondering, tho, is if it is tall enough to use there. It seems rather short to fill the wall space vertically.

les that's a great point about visually filling the space. I'm picturing it about 10" or so above the top of the back cushions so there's no head banging. That puts the bottom of the mirror at about 45" and the top of the arch at about 67". With 8' ceilings do you think that's a problem? Of course, if there's a shelf, it will be higher and if the shelf has some mass to it, it could add 2, 3, 4"?? If the shelf has brackets, then I'm thinking it could even be hung higher since the brackets would be the lover part relating to the sofa - know what I mean?

ach - missed your post, Lori. I like different/eclectic things, too, but sometimes I have trouble and eclectic veers towards 'none of these things is just like another'! Sconces? Me?? Silly girl - next thing you'll want me using tassels!

I think it will look lovely, and will add to the collected look of your room. Maybe someone can help you visualize it with some photoshopping to see it hung by itself, and along with artwork or sconces.

YOu will be able to tell if you make a paper template of the mirror and tape it on the wall. I am thinking that if the mirror is about 22 inches tall, leaving 10 inches between it and the back of the couch might be too much open space. Then for sure it might feel too much like it is floating, and not anchored. That also puts the top of the arch right at eye level when people are standing in the room, which again might feel low.

Try the template and see. I do love the idea, and the mirror!

nicole - painting it white (or whiteish) is certainly one of my thoughts but you haven't seen the other players in this scenario yet! It's just possible it may be better dark but you'll see what I mean when I get the rest of my questions and pictures together. Stay tuned - I'll need more help!

I like a lot of painted furniture, but your mirror is so gorgeous and warm I'd encourage you NOT to paint it. I wouldn't worry about a mix of materials, it can really stand alone as is, it's a beautiful accent.

The taping a template to the wall is a great idea, especially since you're probably going to have to use some pretty substantial anchors to attach it to the wall--you only want to have to do that once!

Have you thought about turning the piece so the heavy bottom becomes the top and the mirror the bottom?? You could attach a narrow trimmed board to the the top to create a shelf.

The wood is really beautiful in its natural state - but is that a blue painted bookcase I spy in the reflection? If that is staying in the room - perhaps the mirror painted the same as that would tie the pieces together.

Another vote to use it. That mirror is too lovely to put in storage. I also like it as is and think it can stand alone since it has it's own presence. Excellent idea to do a template and see how the height affects things. If you need to add another layer, perhaps some iron scrollwork either above or below--or if you are OK with modifying it, add some screws the lower outer corners, hang a rustic chain to attach to an old wooden plaque below with some pithy saying written on it.

Using the mirror over the mantel is not where I'm headed - that picture is about 15 years old!

A friend on another board came up with a suggestion at the same time I was thinking of it myself. See the white mirror above? Notice how the bottom piece of trim extends out on 3 sides - ALMOST LIKE A SHELF !! That's what my piece needs - I think - and it should be pretty easy to add. Wha'd'ya think?

At this point I'm leaning towards cleaning it up and not painting it - there is one other small piece that I'd like to use in the room with the similar wood tones so I think they'll relate well.

syllabus that's a really interesting idea - I'm going to have to flip a photo to get a visual. The bookcase you're seeing in the reflection is black - must be the sun glare looking blue. But that's one of the pieces up for repainting so it may not stay black.

Sorry DLM I did read that over the mantel was many years ago, but I liked the way that you used it back then (& like that room too). I should have continued on to say that I'm not qualified to say how it would look over the sofa (hence the screen name), but I think the others gave you good ideas.

Please don't apologize decord(don't want to even use that last part of your screen name!) - I'm so often guilty of skimming and not reading thoroughly I figured that's what had happened with you. As for not being *qualified* - Hah! Why do you think I'm asking for help? LOL!
