Help with my son's 'big boy' room...

With #2 on the way in just a few months, we have started on our DS's (3 yo) new room. I am having a tough time getting motivated on this (couldn't be because I'm almost 8 mo. pregnant and have no energy!) and was hoping I could get some of your talented advice to give me a push in the right direction.

We already purchased the US Map bedding from Land of Nod and plan to continue with the "travel" theme in his room. Since hubby and I were pretty avid travelers "pre-kids", we decided this was something that would grow with him through the years and be somewhat educational to boot!

Any suggestions on paint colors & travel decor to go with this bedding? Seems that yellow or red is the obvious choice, however, I have so much gold throughout the house that I'm worried it might be yellow overkill. And red walls seem pretty strong to me, although I think accents in red would look great.

As for decor, I was thinking some vintage style model planes suspended from the ceiling, some old suitcases or trunks and a world map on the wall. Any and all of your creative suggestions welcomed!!

Depending on what color his furniture is, you can go with just about any color. Personally, I love the deep, rich blues in a boy's (or girl's) room. Old Blue Jeans (BM) is a beautiful color.

For prints, try Art.com-I bought some great vintage travel posters from them and then framed them inexpensively with black frames. A large map of the United States or the World would also be great-then you can "track" where you go, where friends and family live, etc. with thumb tacks.

First..a big congrats on your new baby! How exciting. Your little boy must be so excited to be a big brother.. doing his room right before baby, will make him feel special. I love Land of Nod!! and I love the bedding! just perfect! I like the color of the walls in the picture. To break up yellow or gold, add red area carpets and red accents to the walls. Or..there are many nice shades of blue, that will work also. Or..a nice cream and blue pin strip wall paper on the bottom under a chair rail, and either gold, red or blue paint on top, it will break up solid walls that way if you think one color will be too much ..there are so many options, which is great! I love the vintage airplanes and old trunks..that is a perfect idea..maybe find stickers from travel places and stick them on the trucks..or you can make a collage of different places around the world and states and frame it in red as well.. maybe some small flags from different countries for the walls too..( the are triangle in shape and can be put on string to hang across the wall..) I think this will be a beautiful boys room..you have all the right ideas..it's fun and whimsical ..very different from the same ol' sports, trains, cars etc.. you are going to have fun decorating his room. you have to post pictures when you are done. I don't think a Florida Weave will work on container plants, do you? I've looked at all the photos in the link that you provided and all those plants appear to be grown in the ground. I've learned my lesson regarding a single stake, not sure what I was thinking, actually; I believe that I didn't think my plants would end up making it as far as they have. I usually don't have very good luck with tomatoes grown in containers. The fact that they appear to be growing so well and look healthy is a total surprise to me, especially due to one of the containers have two (Big Beef) plants in it. If there is a way to use a Florida weave for a container plant, will you let me know, I would really appreciate it. These containers are getting very heavy and I'd hate to loose the plants now. "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" Not only is this true with kids, but when a parent is totally gone, the child can also fantasize about how wonderful the absent parent is. They can create the perfect parent in their mind if they want. I was 22 when I got together with my BF that had three kids. They were 1, 4 & 6. Their mom was on drugs and left and never came to see them but maybe once a year. I spent my 20's raising his kids without benefit of marriage and when it didn't work out, I was 29 and he wouldn't even let me talk to his kids anymore (unless I would come back to him). I had no legal rights. In a way, I spent my youthful years taking care of his kids while he worked on his career. (he went from a street deputy to detective Sergeant while I was with him, because my being there allowed him to work any shift and not worry about his kids) A house was purchased (in his name only) but I paid on it and helped with improvements but ended up walking away with nothing. (I sometimes think I was lucky to leave with my sanity intact) I get the impression that you think that you and he will have a wonderful little family, especially if the boy is calling you mom. I didn't think of that before gigglemonster said it, but if he is, I can certainly understand why BM would be jumping on you. I'm not saying she's right to, but I could understand that here's her little boy calling you mom and you are trying to make the family she was supposed to have with this 'prize' of a guy and not only that, but he's thinking the kid might forget about her. I'd be fighting mad too. My guess is that the mom is also fairly young, early 20's??? There's a lot of emotions and immaturity too that could be contributing to all the conflict. and I guarantee that she'd tell her little boy to stop calling you mom if he is. He is too young to understand why it's upsetting to anyone, he'd call you both mom if he loves you both... they don't know the difference or think about how the 'real' mom will feel. They are so innocent but that's being ruined by immature people that put him in the middle of all this conflict. I'm really sad for the little boy in this.

Thanks for all the feedback! We're living in a rental right now while we're building. My son's room is yellow now & I just do not like it. I was thinking of a green, something just a tad bit darker than what's in the quilt. I almost bought some red curtains on clearance from JC Penney's, but wasn't sure how they'd look w/ a green wall. Red was the only color on sale. My mother in law suggested painting one wall blue or red & the rest a neutral beige. I just don't know. I am not good at this!! I want to use a color that we can use for at least the next 5 years. I hate to paint!! Oh, we're giving him our old BR suit & it is a maple color.

If you do a grey wall, nice dark brown or black furniture will go well. Definitely look for clean, sleek, and minimalist furniture if the room is smaller. White sheets with hints of grey or black will also make the space brighter and more open. Finally, a sleek modern over head light or recessed lighting will make the space feel new too!

If you are going for a vintage travel theme, how about a light khaki/tan for the walls? Think of the color of an old, slightly yellowed map.

If you're looking for something a little less vintage, then maybe use a blue that is a shade or two lighter than the comforter. I don't think you want dark blue walls with the dark blue comforter. It would blend together. (You might be careful that the blue doesn't turn into baby blue. That might defeat the purpose of a BIG boy room.)

As for accessories, a framed collage of travel memorabilia (plane tickets, train tickets, postcards, admission passes, guide books, etc.) would be cool especially if it contained items from trips that he took with you. You could even use a shadowbox frame if you had bulkier items to display.

What a fun idea for a boy's room - and I really like the map bedding. As soon as I read map theme, the colors blue and green popped into my head. Maybe because those colors depict water and land on maps?

Since the bedding has great blues and greens in it, I would suggest using a complementary green color on the walls and blue and red as accent colors throughout the room.
