Gosh, both my sons had bright yellow as their wall color as babies and up until they were probably about 6 or so. Nothing 'girly' about yellow at all, imo, and it would really be the color to set off the quilt and the art.

However, since you are not in the yellow fan club, I think I might go green. Of course, that also depends on his flooring and furniture. I would look for a striped fabric, perhaps blue and white ticking, for the window treatments.

I love the blue in the picture of the backhoe. You could take that to the paint store and have paint matched to maybe two shades lighter. I think that would look really great. Another option would be to go to a Benj Moore store and take a look at the Pottery Barn colors. They use a blue in many of their young boys' room sets that would be perfect with your quilt (which I just love...).

One stripe of yellow is hardly girly. I doubt your son will even notice. I think there's more green in the quilt, and that the green would be a good wall color, esp. as his tastes and interests change. I'd pick the green in the plane art, and get that mixed at 50%.

Pottery Barn Kids Transportation Valences would be perfect. This pattern is discontinued, but available on ebay and such... Love your theme!

Darling!! I think you can do almost any wall color you want. I even think you can do a neutral wall color, a taupe, and let those colors stand for themselves!!

I painted my DS's room apple green (he's 3 1/2). We love it! The room feels cool in summer yet cozy in winter. Color is a little brighter in person than in the photo.

There's a dresser under the window now, shortened curtains, and toys.

I like the color scheme you've chosen so far and I think there are a lot of choices that would look nice. I like tan, light green, light or medium blue...maybe even use both tan and blue.

Quilt is not girly, I consider it gender-neutral. Good luck!

I would go with a very soft faint shade of blue, it will compliment all the other blues.....nothing says boy, better than blue.

I like the medium blue in the art since you are not a fan of yellow. My first thought was yellow though.

Thanks for all the feedback! We're living in a rental right now while we're building. My son's room is yellow now & I just do not like it. I was thinking of a green, something just a tad bit darker than what's in the quilt. I almost bought some red curtains on clearance from JC Penney's, but wasn't sure how they'd look w/ a green wall. Red was the only color on sale. My mother in law suggested painting one wall blue or red & the rest a neutral beige. I just don't know. I am not good at this!! I want to use a color that we can use for at least the next 5 years. I hate to paint!! Oh, we're giving him our old BR suit & it is a maple color.

I agree with Les. Green paint on walls with blue curtains, pillows, etc. I would keep red at a minimum.

I have a lot of the same colors in my 7 year old's room. I went with a darker green wall color. Our wood floors are mahogany. I used red baskets under the bed for toy storage, red sheets and black wood bunk beds.

I'm sure your son will love whatever you do!

Actually, I think you could do a great room-expanding effect by painting the opposing walls the blue at the far left on the quilt and then the other opposing walls a real "construction" yellow. That yellow makes me think happy thoughts about my beloved childhood dump truck. Maybe your current yellow is just too wimpy.

monicakm - I found a girl on Ebay who painted them for me for $20 each. I told her what I was looking for & she painted them. I love them & thought it was a very reasonable price. Your son's bedding is similar to what one of my sons has...and not at all girly, in my opinion. We used a Glidden color matched in Benjamin Moore paint. I can't remember the name of the color, but here's a pic...

For my other son's room we used a really nice light green that also looks like it would match your bedding. I don't have a pic of that room with me, but I'll take one if you want to see it.

When I think 'big-boy' I think of a wall color that will transition w/ him w/o having to be repainted from toddler to preschool to elementary, middle and high school to college if he stays.

IMHO I think of 'big' as a color that if I moved all of my kids stuff out of and moved my stuff into that I'd feel like I was in a grown up rm.

I painted our 4YO & 2YO bedroom (they share now) grey blue. I was considering brown but didn't feel like repainting.

The accent colors are red, navy and tan.

You should check out BM Denim Wash - my son (now 5) has it in his room and I love it - don't have a pic right now, but it's a deeper blue that will definitely carry him through many years. I envision my son having this color until he's a teenager!
