Too Trendy?
Comments (19)hmm. I first started thinking about renovating our kitchen in 1990. In 2004, AFTER I had placed my cabinet order, I found the old file of kitchen fliers I had collected. My "2004" kitchen was going to look just like the kitchens I had lusted over almost 15 years before. Medium-dark stained shaker cabinets with black stone countertops (an affinity I most likely developed by spending a lot of time in labs in high school and college and my early adult life. And I especially liked old labs with medium dark wooden cabinets with plain flat panel doors.) It turns out, unbenownst to me, I even ended up with the same cabinet company. Crown Point. Back in 1990/91 they must have been available through the local lumber yard because that's where I had originally seen them and picked up fliers. So my taste hasn't changed much in the last 15 years (fortunately, our ability to afford the cabinets has--as long as we do a lot of diy.) I suggest going with things you've liked for a very long time and to give yourself time to mull over "new" things that seem very exciting. My DH and DD were less attracted to some of the newer trends and were able to direct me away from some of the things I thought I wanted. I'm glad because it turns out that I'm way "over" wanting those items. I think I'll remain happy for a very long time (with the intention that we'll need to change out appliances as they fail) but maybe that's because I'm happy with "boring."...See Moreangc....your ikat chairs/fabric
Comments (2)Sorry so late In replying. I just saw your message. $30/yd is a really good deal, especially since an ottoman only needs 1-2 yds. I had been looking for other sources for the fabric, so I'm so excited you found it. Now, maybe I can do panels too!...See MoreTrendy or Classic? - Upholstery Fabric Choice
Comments (11)Mary, can you post a picture of the room, with the pieces that the chair will be going with? Since the fabrics are so disparate, I don't feel that I can say go for one or the other without seeing the room and its furniture and accessories. I am 'leaning' toward the 'word' fabric, but it's only because I am not a contemporary person, and the bold fabric doesn't do anything for me. But I love gsciencechick's fabric just above! I search for fabric for projects almost every day, and the 'word' or script fabric is still very popular and comes in many forms and colors. I don't think we can say how long either will be popular, though. Comments (86)Spitfire, pretty much my entire family is like that, very frugal Yankees. Furniture, rugs, lamps, etc. were/are only replaced when they get too ratty and worn-out to keep using, or broke and couldn't be repaired. Grandparents grew up in the Great Depression - both sets of grandparents married when the men came back from WWII, saved up and built modest houses around 1950. Pretty much everyone in the family just didn't have the money to be redecorating just because something was no longer considered "stylish". So a bedroom might still have 50-year-old wallpaper on the walls because it wasn't scraped or gouged or badly faded, so there wasn't any point in buying new paper. Although I do remember both grandmothers having very up-to-the-minute-for-1950 bathrooms, one had the robin's-egg blue fixtures complete with the metal-legged console sink and matching tile and the other had goldenrod yellow fixtures, but neither one would have dreamed of remodeling just to change the colors even though the style mavens considered them outright horrible thirty years later. I think a lot of it rubbed off on me, because I see little point (for me) in my decor having to constantly be "fresh" and "updated", it simply doesn't matter to me - I would just like to get things finished and be able to go on to other things to spend my money on. ;-) Practicality also trumps style in a big way in our house. We recently purchased a sectional (wow, brand new furniture, woowoo, but I'd been watching CL for quite a while to no avail) for the most effective use of space in our small, awkwardly-designed living room and I chuckled at the saleslady's comment that although of course you could still BUY them, sectionals were very "out", and we really should be getting a sofa-and-loveseat... even though that's what we were getting RID of because it wasted precious space! (DH and I bicker lovingly over the corner spot. Wonderful place to nest with lots of pillows and a warm blanket.) ljwrar, I would do any number of horrible things :-) for the kind of original features in your house, since my ca. 1900 house was almost completely stripped. Treasure them! If you replace the original light fixtures, wrap them well in acid-free paper, box them up carefully, and store them for a future owner to put back if they wish....See Moremtnrdredux_gw
