X-post re Bathroom showers

The MBA in our beachhouse is tiny and the shower leaks. We are going to make it into just a water closet, and take over another bedroom to expand the MBA.

So, we have a blank slate. I'd like to do something different, because I always do, and because we finished our CT house only three years ago and I don't want to do what we just did there in those bathrooms (frameless shower doors, wetrooms, pedestal tubs with "telephones", you know).

Isn't it funny, that now a built-in tub seems new and exciting. LOL. Or I may get a clawfoot and paint it a fun color.

As for the shower, we will probably put a 4' square in a corner. Looking for something different and something that sort of felt 1906-y, i priced something like this, in white:

So, I knew it wouldn't be easy or cheap, but hey, I am game. It took me three weeks to get a quote. It will take 22 weeks lead time, and the cost is $15,520 (right angle, true divided light as per this rendering, 48" each side) . A normal frameless glass right angle would have cost $2400.

So I said to the guy, gee, I guess that is a little indulgent, isn't it! Then he told me that he was doing a job for someone where the shower door was $26,000 ... it had a frame all around it, in solid polished nickel. He was telling me that lately people don't want frameless anymore, since we all have it now, and they are looking for frames!

People (self included) are funny, huh? And this is in Maine, not NYC.

I actually want the shower to have wall, a real wall, and then a curtain on one side. DH thinks I am craz-zey!

Oooh I love that shower door. Looking just at the top it looked like prison bars but as I scrolled down it is unique and it would really look fantastic in your Sea Captain's house. Don't worry about your DH, mine just shakes his head at my antics. He doesn't just think I'm crazy, he knows it!

Actually, someone had a great idea in the BA forum. Just use one side, as a partition, perpedicular to the shower fixtures. No door. Half the amount of glass.

I was going to keep the heart pine floors, but maybe I would put in a tile "rug", kwim?

Although I am not brave enough to do something so permanent and daring- I LOVE it! We went to a Homearama this past weekend and the first floors would be safer with color choices but when entering the basements, I would catch myself saying, "Wow, that's unexpected!" Unexpected meaning that it didn't match the style of the rest of the house, kind of like a retreat I guess. I say if you really love it, "Go for it!"

circuspeanut, That makes total sense. And I totally agree that it's a better layout. But---- we're really having renovation burnout now. As you know we started demoing the main living area a year ago.. and we're still installing trim and living with doorless cabinets and plywood counters in the pantry. And that's spending every second of spare time on it! So, I'm trying to find a good compromise between making this cruddy bathroom work and look better, and not making huge amounts of extra work for DH. He's the plumber and electrician. He's already groaning about moving the door.... but I do think that will be a pretty dramatic improvement over the floor plan we have now. We've decided to do a new tub/shower combo, and he was relieved that that meant he didn't need to break into the 1950's drains to move the toilet. :)

G'day, Aussiepete- I'm also a Pete who was/is an Aussie -well I was born in Canada but lived in Australia and NZ most of my adult life. I have a copy of the BC electrical code, simplified - if you went to your local Home Hardware, you may be able to get a version for your own province, or from a student bookshop where they teach electrical trades. I will go out on a limb and say this should be the same for your province, since I believe they're working on a national code for Canada (except, maybe Quebec? - a little separatist humour there) Rules 6-206 2-308(1) and 26-402 state that "nor should it (the service panel) be in bathrooms, clothes closets, stairwells, kitchen cabinets or similar places. So I guess you'll have to think of something else - I wonder, though, if constructing a utility closet WITHIN a bathroom would be acceptible, but keep in mind, you want room to work in there. Maybe you should go to wherever it is you go to book an inspection and ask their advice. I'm sure they would be happy to make suggestions, after all at least initially (but be ready to submit and be inspected when you build it) you won't be doing any wiring work, you just (quite rightly) don't want to violate the code (potentially having to remove or rectify the work later)

Here are 2 of the ideas which we talked about. It's a quick and dirty presentation, but hopefully you can see what we’re hoping to accomplish. I also want to keep in mind that this is not a large house, probably about 2500-2700 sq. Ft in a mid-priced community in central NJ....still $$ With version 1, depending on the walk in closet aisle widths, moving the current bathroom wall out 1 foot, we can accommodate a 36x48 shower, and have a vanity next to the shower. We might even have room for a small cab in front of the window to act as a vanity area with storage for my DIL, especially with a mirror above it, almost as the current vanity right now. It,s not a luxurious bathroom or closet, but it improves both the storage space and shower size. Pocket doors might be a consideration here. Version 2 presents a couple of issues. It also needs to have that bathroom wall pushed out 1 foot, but it keeps the door in the same relative position, which means that the bathroom stays approximately the same, with a bigger shower and vanity. However, the closet only adds about 4 linear feet of hanging space, or with upper and lower rows, approx 8 inear feet. The issues are my DIL still won't have the vanity she needs (I should add she uses lots of hair products and makeup) so they'd lose that additional closet space (it's a 7 foot reach in closet opposite the window wall -in the diagram above, it,s on the upper wall of the master) and we'd need some sort of special closet doors to make the now L-shaped closet accessible. The advantage of this version is that it won't make the bedroom feel smaller because the dressing area is open to the bedroom. Hoping for feedback and more ideas....I really appreciate the suggestions I've gotten so far. I've presented them all to my son and DIL and they're getting excited.

There are photos on houzz.com of a shower using similar doors. Have you seen them? They might be from a different source. I think I have it saved and will look for it a bit later. Need to get to supermarket and pick up kids.

Mtn, here is the photo. If you read the questions the designer gives the source and how it was done. Sounded cheaper than the one you mentioned above. With this one they have the flat glass on the inside, which would be more durable, less maintenance and easier to keep clean.

Chispa, That is very helpful --- my glass guy said it had to be true divided light. This bolting option is worth exploring!

Thanks, Chispa, I came across those people, too. Somehow I dont think shipping from CA is going to bring the price down, LOL!

I think the "economical" way to do it it with one partition. I am not sure if I want to do that in a room that will have original wood floors....

I think you should go all retro and have a shower curtain! Cheaper, and you can bet no one else at that price point has one.... It has the added advantage of never going out because it was never in....now that's timeless Ã°ÂÂÂ

(Can you believe there is no ironic winking icon on the new ipad? That's as close as I could get)
