We painted my DD's room BM Dill Pickle about five years ago. She is now 19 and still loving it.

Could you talk her into a neutral for the walls and then spice it up with bright green and fuschia accessories, bedding, pillows and curtains. If she changes her tastes a few years down the line it would be easy to redo the room without painting. My granddaughter is 19 and her college dorm room is pink, bright green, and black, though of course the walls are college-neutral. Looks great. Those colors are super popular now but by next year could be out. Allowing her input and choices at 12 1/2 is a great learning experience for her, but it doesn't have to mean 'anything goes'.

We have BM Wales Green in our hallway and soon to be in the living room. I love the lively colors and think she is choosing happy over heavy. I'd have no trouble painting a bright green, but keep the fuschia to the accessories only.
OTOH - If you want to tone down the color a little, do 2 walls in her green and 2 in a neutral.

I LOVE it! Like dianalo we had Wales Green in a previous house (our kitchen) and it was such a happy color ... without being obnoxious.

I would certainly let her choose whatever she wants. It is HER bedroom, her private space. I think it is very important to let kids have a say in their own rooms, no matter what we think. How else can they learn?

One of the most frequent comments one reads on this forum is "it is only paint." Now that she is 12, you will find many more important things than paint color in her room to discuss.

Thanks everyone! I think those are all excellent points -- it's great to have you for a reality check. Yes -- it's her room, and it's only paint and she's picking happy greens, and it can be easily redone later. And since pink with green is popular, it will be easy to find coordinating stuff (I love that toile)! And best of all --getting her room ready for painting has been a huge incentive for her to clean out her old toys and stuff. :)

A 'tween I know had her room painted Dunn-Edwards Lime Kiss, which I am sure BM can duplicate. I thought the color was a tad "day-glo" before she added her hot pink and brown accessories, but now it is indeed a very cheerful room. More important, she is extremely happy with it and has been delighted with it for almost three years, so far. The floor is dark brown, the bedspread a white/pink/green/brown print, the canopy hot pink, and the throw pillows combinations of all of the above. There is also a hot pink bedside lamp. Other than the pink, none of this would have been my choice, but she is thrilled. Therefore, so is the entire family!

her linens are pottery barn, pink toile on white background with green and blue in there. curtains are pink/green/white stripe with coordinating rug. room came out great, very pulled together.
she loves that her room is green and I love that its not too bright or garish. its a nice relaxing green but still girly. she chose it when she was 10, she's almost 13 now and still likes it. I think she'll like it even into her later teens too.

I would tire of the pink long before the green. When she grows up --probably age 15 :), consider black and white with the green paint. Very sophisticated IMHO.

Let her pick and have fun with it! It's her way of getting involved in the process - Houzz just launched an app today for the iPhone / iPad - she could play with it and show you what she likes ... again, fun thing to do together.

My experience with helping my two DD's redecorate their rooms, is that often times they lack an understanding of the big picture and just focus on the paint, not thinking of how this ties in with their bedding, WTs, and other stuff. I am somewhat in between the two camps: it's her room, let her pick and choose something that is aesthetically appealing. My 16-year-old DD craves color and always has. I now see this is not a fad, but her personality. I've read some other posts on the recent neutrals thread about adults who crave color and others who like the visual calm of a neutral palate. It's a personal choice, neither is wrong. It took me several attempts and compromises to finally accept her desire for color and this is what we finally came up with.

I helped her to develop a vision for her room and showed her how we could balance out the saturated turquoise walls with B&W accessories and with a touch of lime.

Use this as an opportunity to bond with your DD over her mini-room makeover and make it into a room she will feel good about and proud to have her friends over. As part of this, also consider the other furnishings in the room. Will she be getting new bedding, WTs and other accessories as well? If so, start with that. Then based on that, pick 3-5 colors that you think are good candidates based on what you think would compliment her decor and what you know about her desire for color, get sample pots and paint on the wall and let her choose from those. It helps a lot if you can find an inspriation photo and work from that. Perhaps something like this?

I find Pottery Barn teen and even JC Penney's to have good pictures of rooms.

My DD's bedroom in our beach cottage is BM Pale Vista, which she chose. At first when I saw the room painted, I thought... oh, no. But it quickly grew on me and she loves it. And we have gotten a lot of compliments from visitors!

Assuming you do not want to go to the expense of custom bedding or window treatments, I would leave paint last.

I would first select bedding --- maybe lily pulizter, garnet hill, pine cone hill, serena and lily ... look at those.

You can then pick the paint. Otherwise, esp if it is an assertive color, you may have difficulty finding bedding,
