'Mad Men' Style: Sally Draper's Tween and Teen Bedroom
Will girly pinks prevail, or will the crazy colors and patterns of the '70s drop in? Tune in for our predictions for Sally's bedroom
As Mad Men fiends all over the world anxiously await the long-delayed arrival of the new season, there have been plenty of theories flying around about what season five will bring. Will Don and Megan's marriage last? What about Betty and Henry? Joan and Greg? Although the usual love drama on the show is always exciting, one of the most intense and eye-opening characters in season four was little Sally Draper. As she gets older, her character continues to grow from quiet and shy to wild and rebellious. Considering that the show is about to get into her tween and teen years, it's a safe bet that we haven't seen anything yet.
Since both Betty and Don have new homes, Sally has a chance to completely redesign her bedroom. The question is, what will it look like? Will she keep things prim, pastel and proper as her mother does? Or will she become a '70s wild child and play with pattern and color? Only time will tell, but here are a few predictions.
When to watch: Mad Men's 2012 season begins with a two-hour premiere Sunday, March 25

Having a tween in the family usually means having a gaggle of six or seven friends around. Although Sally has been a bit of a loner until now (except for that one friend Betty banished from the house), her social circle will likely grow through middle school and high school. Having a little place in her room where she and her friends can hang out is a must — the girls can listen to records and giggle over magazines without giving Betty a headache.
Being a teen and tween girl means taking forever to get ready. Dances, football games and dates are right around the corner for Sally, and she'll need the perfect place to powder her nose. A vanity in a shocking pink finished off with a Lucite chair is classic with a bit of funk.
Maybe Sally will be a complete decorating rebel and go for the full mod style, with bright colors and bold patterns that carried through to the '70s — a look that couldn't stand out more in a house full of pastels and florals. The pinks, oranges and big geometric cutouts in this room still feel girly enough for Sally but have more edge.
If Sally starts to really go down a dark path (as last season just started to hint at) after Don's new marriage, bright and cheerful colors may not last long in her tween room. A darker wall color and a couple Andy Warhol prints would be more fitting in that case.
Of course, since she's been attending therapy regularly, Sally may be a bit more together this season. Maybe she'll even be ready to graduate from her room's signature rosy hue. This blue- and green-toned room has a bed with a more casual feel. Along with the armchair, it creates the perfect space to hang out with friends, without dividing the room up too much.
If Betty insists on a more formal look, giving the twin bed a mini upholstered headboard could be a good compromise — this one has a similar look to the one that was in Betty and Don's old bedroom.
Sally's original bed had a beautiful white iron headboard, much like the one in this cheerful green room. This room's simple but funky style would be a great for Sally. The coverlet feels innocent, but the shaggy green blanket, upholstered bench and other colorful accents give a nod to a worldlier age.

Sally may be a a girly girl for at least the beginning of her tween years, but as she starts to develop her own style (and delves into the wild style of the early '70s), bold patterns and color may start to make an appearance in her room. Pale pink walls can be replaced with a vibrant (but tasteful) lavender, and a bright pink duvet can cover up the old floral bedding. A graphic rug gives this bedoom the final dose of that great mod style.
