Tween-Age Daydream
How to Design a Kid's Room That Goes From Tot to Teen in Style

Once you pinpoint and execute your own personal style at home, most rooms can stay the same for a good chunk of years... that is, unless you have offspring. Kids' rooms are notoriously fickle — perfect at one moment, way outdated and not age-appropriate the next.
So how to design a room that will take your child from tot to teen, without resorting to floor-to-ceiling beige? See great examples that work for a range of ages below.

A round bed? Get outta town! I would have been thrilled by this back in the day. And unlike other unusual-shaped beds (think boats or cars), a round one will be just as cool for high schoolers too.
The arched alcoves for these beds create a bit of privacy in a shared room — good for those angsty years.
Floating shelves can hold stuffed animals or similarly soft toys at first, then photos or other artwork when the occupant is older. Pillows provide some character here, and can be changed with ease.
Primary and pastel colors are tough to transition through tween years. But bright colors like this citron green have surprising staying power.
Tip: Start with good bones (And maybe an icon or two).
Good storage space never goes out of style. And, if you aren't worried about them getting destroyed, a Togo chair and FL/Y Pendant are modern icons sure to stand the test of time.

Create style with bed linens. They're easy to swap out, and can take a room from girlish-cute to eclectic-cool in a snap.
And no need to banish pink. Just pair it with other bold colors to veer towards vibrant rather than cute.
Black and white does the trick quite well.
Give furniture a look with fresh eyes. Perhaps that cutesy pair of white princess-style nightstands could get a grownup makeover with a shot of punky color.
Switch out the stuffed animal and "girl" pillow, and you've instantly created a more all-age appropriate look. Honestly, I kind of wish I had this pile adorning my bed today.

Art print room divider screens are also a great idea for tween rooms. There are many different themes to choose from. Even if you don't have to partition off the room, it can still be used as a decorative wall accent piece. It can go in the corner, or behind a headboard, or near a window. Also, another great idea for a tween room is either a futon or chair bed for their friends when they come to sleep over.
